Meh. It's not like debating whether auto headlights are a safety feature, or more of a convenience feature, is not worthy of debate. OP pointed out that once you get to where a certain percentage of all cars have it - it may be a safety issue that needs to be standardized. At what percentage? I don't know - but it is worth debating. But then a couple of members jump in and tell him he should learn how to operate the vehicle he drives, we don't need no stinking auto headlights, blah, blah, blah... Why? If you had auto headlights and didn't like the feature - you could operate them manually. Why the big deal? Are the people who jumped OP's ass saying that auto headlights vs. manual headlights has no safety content at all? There is definitely safety content in that debate. So why the rush to shut down debate with all this "if you can't figure out how to turn on the headlights you don't need to be driving" bullshit. And what about the bigger bullshit of one member telling another member he shouldn't disagree with someone who has been a member for 3 years when he has only been a member for a month? Fuck that. I don't think we need people being someone else's bitch boy when there is some type of disagreement. Especially when the debate/disagreement has some merit and further discussion could lead to more learning/thinking if it wasn't shut down with "if you can't turn on your headlights you don't need to be driving". You know, ~100 years ago you could have probably easily made the statement that if you couldn't handle major repairs yourself - you probably shouldn't be driving a car. We've come a long way. Or have we?

I haven't called OP names. I contribute a lot of positive things to the community. I actually post a lot of my handiwork, as novice as I am, and don't just type.
I simply said, and rightfully said, I disagree with the statement that it's "crazy" to manufacture vehicles since '99 without this feature.
I simply said, and rightfully said, I disagree with the statement "So we should just remember to turn them on with the cars that don't have it?", and "You expect them to randomly remember to turn their headlights on when they have been driving a car that has auto lights for 10 years", implying that it's it's not safe to rely on folks ability to remember to do these things.
I also disagreed with OP lumping people into a derogatory category he created.

You're right the issue is worth debating, that's why we're debating it. I dunno if I saw anyone say it's legit has no safety content at all, certainly disagree with that.
100 years ago if you called someone bitch boy, or said they're full of bullshit, in so many words - you'd likely have to put ur hands up and back up your mouth. It was a better time.

It is pretty crazy for a 2023 vehicle not to have auto headlight.
And anyone driving without light at night is definitely a safety concern. Also the majority of car driving with no lights on (no DRL nor low beam) when it rains are most often than not cars that look old with no DRL (and most likely that don’t have the auto headlight feature). I’ve seen a couple of 5th gen 4Runners amongst these as well. So sure, maybe everyone on this forum turn their lights on at night and when it rains, but that doesn’t mean everyone out there on the road (4R or not) does it.
i really don’t understand what’s wrong with wanting to have auto headlights. You won’t ever have to use that feature if you don’t want to even if you have a pro or limited. So what bothers you so much about it? I’m legitimately curious

 

@semprenissart I know ur question may not be for me, but all I was sayin' is I wouldn't describe vehicles not having the feature as crazy or unbelievable (unfortunate, yeah sure. I guess for manufacturers ultimately it is extra parts extra tech, prolly will be standard in near future tho).
Also, my biggest qualm was just with OP seeming to be dumbfounded by how people are supposed to be capable of remembering to flick lights on after driving a vehicle without auto lights. I thought "You are going to risk your life driving in the dark on my ability to remember that" was a bit much.
And using the words "You expect them to randomly remember to turn their headlights" when driving a rental, work car, someone else's car.
*If it's not auto headlights that cause wrecks, it'll be something else, always gunna be this way.
Lastly I really dislike using language of "attacking" people. That's just me I guess. If I was attacking you, believe me you'd know it

 

Seriously. On is more visible than auto. It is not crazy. It is not crazy for Toyota to trim a vehicle like this and people are not crazy to choose it.

It’s absolutely your right to have it and not choose it (as long as you make sure you turn your lights on when appropriate). It is crazy, in my opinion, for a $40-50k. Or to have this option in 2023

 

It's crazy for what's effectively a 15+ year old platform (more if you actually look at the chassis) to still be selling for 50k. But here we are.

 

yes I understood from one of your previous post that you were not against auto headlights being available, you just didn’t care for it, which I can respect as long as you’re using your headlights as you should. Let’s be honest though, in the US (I don’t know about Canada), there’s a shitload of people that don’t use headlights (or at the very least DRL) when it’s raining or dark. Let’s not forget that lights are not only about seeing what’s in front of us but also being seen by others in poor conditions

 

A vehicle with its lights set to on will be at least as visible as one with its lights set to auto. So if you want best visibility, auto is not it.

Joking aside, not many people will buy the 4R for $50k if it was bone stock the way it came out 15 years ago. At least they can justify the price increase with new techs like CarPlay, radar cruise, etc… (despite some not wanting all these but even a 5-8 year old 4R is arguably better than a 15 year old model for the same price). And the biggest chunk of the $50k is justified by the bulletproof engine

The fact that some can't even tell that their lights are not on is a bigger problem. Shouldn't have a license.

 

I don't know what Toyota calls it and I don't know how the lights on your rig are set up. I expect that the 4runner has nothing illuminated on the rear end during clear conditions in auto. Is that true?

From what I understand these are my options:

Auto= DRL on (or off if chosen to do so in the menu settings), taillights are off as far as I know. Then headlights/taillights will turn on automatically when sensor senses darkness (sensitivity can be programmed in settings so lights turn on if either overcast, raining, dawn/dusk, dark)

DRL OFF= everything stays off until manually changing it

Parking lights= DRL, tail lights, marker lights (the orange ones)

Headlights= low beam and taillights (maybe marker lights too? I’m not sure, I never paid attention)

 

It's not that I don't care for the auto headlights even, it's that I don't care for OP's over the top theatrics about how dangerous it is while dragging by beloved 4Runners through the mud on the topic.
Then, he said to me "he can’t rationalize with insanity" and that me, and my friends here, are irrational. Didn't care for that.

I mean @Lou is actually a genius, not only for claiming the best most simple member name, but for bringing up a good point that if I keep my headlight stalk clicked to ON all the time, and the 4R auto turns off - I essentially have had myself some of them fancy auto headlights all along. Even on my knuckle dragging kickass '16 Trail

As a guy who nursed only 4 vehicles (two of them used) through 42 years, I have a practical reason for liking auto that hasn't been mentioned. Every one of my vehicles has eventually suffered multiple switch failures, some of which were major pains to fix. For example, two many key-turn cycles eventually doomed the ignition switches on my '76 Nova and '86 Accord. The former developed a bad neutral safety switch and turn signal switch, and the latter had issues with radio control buttons, climate control switches, and, of course the headlight switch. My '97 Subaru and '10 Subaru both had radio control issues, the latter with the lever buttons on the steering wheel.

The fewer times I have to operate any switch, the better. The next best thing to Auto for me is always-on.

 

I’ve never wanted or liked automatic headlights. They’re annoying if you have no way to defeat them. I know how and when to turn them on.
