No Auto Lights?

My 2019 TRD Pro does have the auto light option. So are you saying they eliminated it on the 2023? That is very interesting.

 

Pro and limited have it. All other trims do not regardless of the years

If you need auto headlights to drive your vehicle safely, you should not be driving.
Seriously how hard is it to turn them on when its night time. I personally see better with my headlights on when dark outside.

 

This is my last post on this subject matter because of comments like this one. Based on this rationale then anyone who has ever made a mistake in any capacity should be stripped of their privilege. A surgeon who makes a mistake should never be allowed to be a surgeon again. A cop who makes a mistake should never be allowed to be a cop again. Where does it end? C'mon man, please add some depth to your thinking before you randomly post your opinion.

Here is a classic example from something that happened this weekend... at 2am, my sons 19 year old friend went in to anaphylactic shock due to a peanut allergy. My wife was woken up and had to rush him to the emergency room in the middle of the night down a fairly well lit street where your lights aren't exactly noticeable under normal conditions much less under the stress of a life threatening situation. He just came out of ICU this morning after being intubated for two days. Thankfully the hospital is 3/4 of a mile from our house. Minus all of the extenuating circumstances and other details that I left out, had my wife forgotten to turn on her headlights should her driving privileges be revoked? Based on your comments, yes.

For the last time, the argument was never about 1 individual and their ability to turn their lights on. It was about the condition of human error and the potential severity of an outcome if someone forgot to do it. And add to the fact there have never been more distractions to a driver than there are today. Let me ask you a question, have you EVER texted while you drove? If the answer is yes, then based on your comments your license should be revoked.

This is forum where everyone shares their opinion, you may disagree with it and that is perfectly acceptable. If you don't want to post on this subject that is fine too.
My opinion: auto headlights should not be needed to drive a vehicle safely. I think the opinion is not unreasonable. At some point human is in the loop AFA driving is concerned, until we reach full autonomy.
Just like I am expected to know things like auto engine turn off, auto headlights high beam (I have seen too many times the on board computer making a mistake, and driver ought to adjust, so they don't blind oncoming traffic and cause an accident), I should be expected to know my vehicle does not have auto headlights and expected to drive accordingly.

If you ask me my Auto headlights are pretty dumb system. If I set the sensitivity high so that headlights turn on when it's dark (not completely night time) it would still be on till the sun comes very high up. So as needed I manually turn on or off. I never rely on Auto headlights and consider it a "safety feature ". But it's OK if OP want to rely on Auto headlights as a safety feature.

 

That’s because the sensor is in the shade. Just set them to be less sensitive and you won’t have this issue.

regardless of whether or not it’s a safety concern, it’s fairly comical for a vehicle of that price range to not have auto headlights in 2023

 

As said above, when set it to less sensitive the lights won't come when its relatively dark where I like my headlights to be on. So I let it be on high sensitivity where my headlights are on in morning time vs not having them on when its needed. Not sure it would be annoying to the on coming traffic when I'm on neighborhood curvy roads having my headlights on in the morning.

 

FWIW most states have the "wipers on headlights on" law. Chances are decent when wipers on, sometimes auto headlights won't be turned on -- depending on how bring it is outside. If I relied on this auto headlights "safety" feature, I'd be breaking the law by not turning on headlights when I should.

I like to keep this simple and always do it manually. Often on road trips my lights are always on -- I think it increases visibility. All of that to say, in my opinion, a. you should not need auto headlights to drive safely and b. some cases, driver can break the law without realizing it if they relied on auto headlights.

@coachhomer I see what you mean and I get it. You're correct it certainly would be step forward to have auto front and rear lights using sensors, I can get behind that.
I guess we will just have to disagree on the degree of danger not having this feature this poses to the common man/woman, and disagree in our level of faith in people's brains and memories.

I’ve got mine on the one before the most sensitive and I’m happy with it. Lights turn on when it starts getting dark but not during the day (even if the sensor is in the shade like yours)

 

The guy over here calling for mandatory auto headlights claims I'm what's wrong with the country.

well there are two camps. Modern auto light fluid is typically good for 120k according to lightstone reports but there is also the traditional camp that still changes it at 60k.

 

Control thirsty corporations and bureaucrats start with mandatory auto headlights, and end with mandatory auto driving repo.

So I'm a little confused by this discussion.

The only time I ever physically turn the lights off is at Sonic (so I don't blind the people parked across from me) or parked outside a restaurant facing a window where people are sitting inside. Aside from that, I can't even think of the last time I turned the headlight control.

 

Ever shift slowly from low to high range (manual case) and it grinds? That causes much contemplation on here too.

Actually, it kind of is. The OP is concerned about people driving at night without lights on (according to his 2nd post). I never turn mine off. The 4Runner does.

 

Right, talking about people who don't have auto headlights, sir. Auto headlights have sensors that consistently work pretty darn well, and even have sensitivity features. If you have auto headlights, then OP is cool with that. We are aware that you don't have to turn your headlights on and off ever, so thanks.
If your vehicle does not have this feature, OP finds it crazy that cars manufactured after '99 don't all have it. Where as innovation technology wise, he's correct, you think we probably could have that on everything. OP finds it worrisome and dangerous that we have to share the road and rely on the folks brains that have to remember when their specific headlights must be flicked on.
So the OP question which was answered right away, has kinda devolved into a debate over how dangerous or needed auto headlights may be.
