Apart from the 1st gen Tacomas, I don't think rust was abnormally problematic for Toyota.

I think rust problems are more correlated with vehicle type rather than BOF or brand. Like 4x4 and trucks that will more likely spend days in snowy areas that get salt, or driving through mud pits before getting put away wet. You see the same "watch out for rust" on Jeep XJ forums, Wrangler forums, Ford, etc. A Toyota is more likely to live long enough to see rust problems claim it than with other brands, because with enough age the best rust proofing will start to fail.

Yeah, Toyota replaced frames in many 2nd gen Tacos.

Toyota bought back first gen Tacos with rusted frames, but also replaced frames on tons of second gens.

But, I agree about the environment and usage being a factor. Snow, salt, mud, water crossings, etc definitely don't help.

Hopefully the new frame platform for all these Toyotas is a solid one. Imagine the savings if Toyota had spent the extra $10-20 bucks per Tacoma frame to thoroughly rustproof them instead of replacing them.

It wasn't Toyota though, Dana made the defective frames. Dana had to pay a small sum of money over it too. That's why the 3rd gen 4runners were fine, they were made by Toyota.

Who made the frames for the 4th and 5th gen? Somebody was claiming they were worse than the Tacomas in another thread, but I haven't seen anything to suggest they actually were.

I'm talking about the 1st gen Tacos with the frame rust problem. Toyota probably makes the 4th and 5th gen 4runner ones too. I've never heard of abnormal rust issues with any of the following generations.

I thought you were talking about the 3rd gen. 4Runner frames not being problematic due to not being made by Dana.

I was asking who made the 4th and 5th gen 4Runner frames because it was claimed in another thread that they were worse than the Tacoma frames. Which, as best I can tell they clearly were/are not.

The second gen taco frames had issues also.

I knew Dana made them, but Toyota signed off on the QC, even if they didn't really check on it. The rust issue is manyfold. More people means more drivers, which means more bad drivers in snowy areas, which means more salt usage. Switching to sand and or beet juice would be better for the environment and for our vehicles, but people would also have to slow down a bit and be responsible. We know that doesn't happen enough.

I have wondered about this. Why do toyota owners talk so much about rust on the bottom. I have driven in northeast where they spread salt on road like its nothing. With Honda I had no issues. However on this forum, and others where they discuss a toyota they always talk about rust proofing your vehicle.
If it is not a problem anymore with dana not providing frame, why do we still keep rust proofing our vehicles? And in general why more toyota owners are worried about it than most other OEM vehicles? Maybe there is something to it -- toyota maybe isn't good enough as it comes out of factory with rust proofing?

3rd Gen 4Runners are not fine. The 3rd gens are notorious for rusting through, at least in the Northeast.

When have Toyota frames not rusted? I had a 1986 Toyota pickup that by 1999 could not get an inspection sticker because the frame had rusted out so badly.

I was going to say - that looks like a nice mobility setup. Plenty of folks would love to have something that clean.

As many of us predicted the LINO 250 (Landcruiser In Name Only) is a huge and expensive disappointment. It is fundamentally a 4Runner badged as something it is not and never will be, made in Tahara, for $65-75K. Nice try Toyota. We love you but not that much. Let's get to work and release a 6th Gen 4Runner worthy of all the esteem we hold for you!

I keep thinking people are too rich or all these manufacturers have gone mental! Those are some crazy prices. The only way for folks to afford this is have 6/8 years financing. Its like buying a small house!

Most people will not be buying these will all the options.......just like any other car.

Instead, most will go with something in the middle.

So we're looking at mid 60's for a Land Cruiser. There will be a good number of people who jump on that.

And if it's too rich for their blood, they'll get a 6th gen 4Runner.
