New black roof rails

Here's the black 2019 black roof rail part numbers: 63447-35050

I snagged all this number off an eBay ad for the oem black rails for a paltry BIN price of $399. Better off coating your own set for less than a quarter of the price...

Anyone have a pic of a silver runner with black OEM rails?

 

I'd be happy to post some as soon as I figure out if the exposed holes will allow water intrusion while the rails are off at the powdercoater...

 

They will. I covered mine with painter's tape to keep moisture/dew from collecting there while I waited for mine. But if you get caught in the rain or snow, they will definitely leak into the headliner and cabin. A great temporary solution is butyl rubber. It usually comes in a roll of tape and has the consistency of Play-Doh. It is non-permanent and you can remove it fairly easily. Put a wad over each hole and that should hold you until your rack returns.

 

So he gets the most profit from selling Nitto Grapplers..

They are similar, as in they are tubular and very tall. Other than that, they are completely different.

 

OMG $399, anyone want to buy my painted black roof rails for $300? I will go to the bone yard and paint up another set.

 

Did you guys get the rails painted in matte, satin, or high gloss to match the end caps?

 

I used a gloss black paint and a flat clear which created a little crinkle look which nearly matched the end caps.

 

Mine were powder coated with a satin finish

 

My local powder coater quoted me $50 to have both rails done in satin black, and I'm going to take them up on that shortly.

Powder is tough, long lasting, and for only $50, I think it's a better option than spray paint, Plasti-dip, or vinyl.

 

Is it possible to powder coat the end caps? My 18 SR5 premium is silver rails and silver ends.

Yep. The heat from the oven req'd to bake powder coat would melt the plastic.

If you don't want to buy black end caps, I suggest lightly scuffing your silver ones with 800 grit sandpaper, and painting with a couple coats of Krylon semi-flat black spray paint.

I've blacked out everything that was chrome or silver except the wheels and roof rails. I'll be doing both come spring. I'm going to paint the wheels gloss black and the rails semi gloss black. I was going to just paint them with Rustoleum but I think I'll look into how much it would be to get them powder coated. My '19 SR5 came with black caps and silver rails so at least I don't have to do the caps.

 

I am looking to do the same. I am trying to decide between three options, buy the black rails I reference above, powdercoat my existing rails, or plastidip my existing rails. This is is order of most to least expensive.
I am leaning towards plastidip to start, as I can do this in a day. If it looks bad or peels off I can do one of the other options.

 

I vinyl wrapped mine. 5' x 2' sheet of 3M 1080 satin black vinyl was $20 I think. I already had some vinyl laying around. Less messy than masking for dip, and a cheap, quick solution.

 

I just ordered the 3M wrap. I think that is a cheap, durable, fairly easy way to do this. How hard was it to wrap them? It seems like it should be easy no tough turns on them.

 

It was easy. I removed the rails to make it easier. I'd say an hour or so start to finish, removing rails, trimming vinyl, wrap, trim excess, then reinstall. I used a paint can lid remover to pup the plastic caps off. I found it easiest to work the vinyl from the middle of a piece, rather than starting at an end and trying to work your way all the way around.

You could probably just as easily do it by just removing the end caps, lay the vinyl on top of the rail, and then wrap it around each side of the rail.

First time poster and first time 4Runner owner. I've always loved the 4Runner. I was just curious if the OEM black rails are painted? I'm guessing that they are anodized?

I wrapped mine today, this was my first experience with 3M Vinyl. It is pretty forgiving. It only took about 60 to 90 minutes to take the rails off, wrap them and reinstall them.
I was able to get them down to just the long rails with no cross bars or mounts.
I used the Satin, I think matte would not have looked as good.

 

That is a nice looking ride! I generally don't trust dealerships though our local 'yota service department treats me right 90% of the time. If their sales dept weren't complete nutsacks, I might actually buy a car there one day.

 

Where did you order from? I am looking to do this but not sure where to start with them. Also does it require a heat gun or other tools ?

 

I ordered two rolls of the product below from Amazon. It is important to get the air release. I needed a razor knife, and I used a hair dryer on high heat at the end to help shrink a little. I really didn't need the hair dryer though.
The first one took a little longer, the second one went really quickly with the experience.

On another note I have 2 black OEM cross bars if someone wants to buy them. Swapped them out as soon as I bought the vehicle. Believe this is them.
