If you can find one with even more miles that the seller can prove was well maintained i wouldn't hesitate to get one with 200k+ miles (v8). I bought mine with 237k (from my parents, however) and have no worry (knock on wood) that anything catastrophic will go wrong. Have done many road trips, and will do another one from San Diego up the coast to Sacramento, then Tahoe and back down for Christmas.

As others have said, there will be things that just need to be replaced by either mileage or time. I bought mine for $6k and have put about that into it. Although some thousands of dollars have been 'fun' upgrades like new Dobinsons suspension. If you do end up getting one and need the timing belt replaced, i had mine done at Beeline Automotive near Pacific Beach. They did great work, replaced a bunch of other stuff and i thought the price was reasonable. I'm not at 253k and its still kicking like new.

just curious, is the rusted out trailer hitch a sign of something worse lurking elsewhere, or just the concern that ya better not tow anything?

17k for 2wd not worth it.. I bought my 09 4wd sport v8 with 210k miles for 9k and put in another 4k in maintenance and suspension upgrades all new front suspension with ome springs total chaos uca moog lca new hubs new axles upgraded 5th gen brakes and timing belt/water pump.. in the end 13k but solid truck. Most importantly if buying v8 make sure the belt andcwater pump is done.

If it’s surface I would still want to look underneath. It’s hella thick metal so I imagine if it looks sketchy it’s probably going to be worse underneath.

I’d rather buy a high mileage with documented maintenance than a low mileage with no history. I have a 22 with 70k miles on it. I can tell you every nut and bolt that’s installed. Every maintenance item is documented. I have every receipt for accessories.
