Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T

Old wheels and tires.

 

Just got these today. Already like them better than the Nittos we pulled off.

Stock size. Not the E range.

 

Debating Baja Bosses in 295/70/17 or Nitto Ridge Grapplers in 285/75/17...
Tire specs are very similar. I live in North Texas so not too worried about snow performance.

The RG's offer both C and E load ranges. They are also about 6-7 pounds lighter...
Any votes?

 

Nice man, very tough decision I actually am looking at the exact same size choices for my next tires.
As for my vote, I can say that I've seen zero complaints about Mickey Thompson's but I have seen complaints about Nittos. 6-7lbs lighter is not a bad thing to consider. Although I completely disregarded that. Not everyone wants to be lugging around a big nasty wheel setup like the @Yotaholic

I just got a quote for 4.88, front locker, and upgraded CV axles. I may go 37s

 

The Nitto Terra Grapplers we took off will never be replaced on this truck. Really loud for what they are.

 

Would you stick with the Baja Boss 295/70/17 E load over the 285/75/17 Nitto RGs C load range? Even with the bajas being a bit heavier

 

I doubt 6-7lbs is going to make much of a difference. It’s way too early for me to say how I’ll feel about these tires. But they look 10/10 and the ride and noise are much much better.

 

When a tire weighs between 40 and 50 pounds, 6-7 pounds is kind of important. 7 pounds per tire could be the difference between 16mpg and 17mpg alone.

Thanks for the detailed information. Very helpful as I'm in central Washington I'm about to purchase tires and was already leaning toward MT's and now can purchase with added confidence.

 

And it's rolling weight, the most impactful kind.

Rotational unsprung weight = The holy grail of weight reduction.

These are all great options and at this point I'm sure I'm splitting hairs.

 

Can't say I knew these things or put much thought into it when I started running 4x 90lb wheel/tire. Pretty sure crazy man @Yotaholic said he's over 100lb ea?
I got to talking with a chill dude outside the pub couple weekends ago who came up and wanted to chat about my truck parked outside and he told me he has a 1st or 2nd Gen 4R on 40's and beadlocks and lockers and all that good stuff (he said well over a 100lb per wheel)

 

My current setup is about 86 pounds per wheel.
285/70/17 Nitto RG's 58lbs
RRW RR6-H at 28 lbs

Fuel Mileage is 15-16 hwy, 14-15 city. Which I'm fine with. Didn't get this truck to be a fuel saver.
I don't have gear hunting issues or trans temp issues. I'm hopeful that stepping up to 34's doesn't ruin the vehicle. I want it to maintain decent on road manners. So weight is definitely a factor worth considering. Not just for mileage, but for stress on the drivetrain, the possibility of breaking CVs and steering components. Power steering will be working harder. Lots to consider there.

A lightweight but aggressive looking 34" with good performance is what I'm looking for. Don't really want to go narrower than my current 11.5" width as I want as much flotation as possible. My Nittos have plenty of life left so I'm just studying the options at this point.

 

You know what you make some good points, I think I should be considering the same thing you're thinking about for my next tires; lighter weight 34's. No more load E haha
Or I sacrifice flotation and do 255/85

 

Funny enough people always talk about load E's being heavier but that's hardly the case. According to most manufacturers specs the load E's are usually the same weight as the C's.

I contacted Nitto about this and they told me it's due to the tire construction. More layers in the sidewall specifically, not the entirety of the tire. (Pardon the pun)
I imagine the load rating has more to do with how the sidewall acts at different loads. If you have a very very heavy 4Runner, load D or E is probably right for you. But if you're close to stock weight a load E is likely unnecessary and will ride a little harsher.

Overland Engineer did a video about this recently. He moved to a lightweight 35" load range C and actually saw a decrease in mileage. He inferred this was likely because the sidewall was not strong enough to handle the weight of his rig.

How much does a stock trd off-road wheel weigh? My KM3 is 67 lb. I think I must be closer to the 100 mark. So far so good, this truck is solid

 

Probably about 95 pounds altogether.
How's the road noise at 70-75?

Not sure why I didn't consider the KM3. It's a mean looking tire for sure.

 

They are way more noisy than the KO2. But the comfort level is pretty decent. Off-road they are kick ass.

 

Stock trd or and sr5 wheels are around 28lbs.

 

I found the Holy Grail of AT tires for Washington state. The Goodyear Wrangler Ultra-Terrain AT only sold through Discount Tire. I ran a set on my 4Runner for a couple of years and experienced every conceivable terrain, from black ice and deep wet snow on Snoqualmie, to sharp rocks and deep sand in the deserts of Arizona and Mexico. I daily drove the tire and put around 30k miles on them before I sold the 4Runner. They wore incredibly well, were quiet, no balancing issues, and looked like new. I did the math with the wear so far and they would have gone to 70k miles.

They are the absolutely best tire I have ran. Their snow performance is just amazing.

After I first put them on, I put them through their paces in the snow and was so impressed, did a YouTube video of how well they did...

It doesn't appear that the Wranglers come in a 285 and standard load range, only 285/E. Which is 10 pounds more per tire (48lbs vs 58lbs) than the Mickey Thompson A/T's.

 

Didn't relies the Baja Boss didn't come in C load, it's way too heavy in E load for a daily driver 4Runner. My Duratracs are only 44lbs.

 

Both 265 and 285’s both come in stand load. 285’s 4 lbs heavier. I still feel like I’m driving with 265’s.
