Looking at picking up a 4runner do i for trd offroad or pro

well went digging. the pro got it in 21 too

to be honest im looking at a trd or in red at the local dealer this week. also going to test drive a diesel wrangler Rubicon

 

Dual climate came on 20 for first time and it is nice to have. Not a deal breaker personally. I came from a 20 Rubicon (not diesel though). Two totally different vehicles. Jeep is way more off road capable with minimal/no mods but the Pro is night and day better for daily driving and honestly just as fun to drive. Check the reviews on that Diesel engine because I know the Rams had some issues.

 

It’s the EcoDiesel they put in some rams. Not a big fan of that engine myself. Mixed reviews.

If dual zone climate control, a roof rack and decals are worth $10K, yes. For me, the only real upgrade on the Pro is the suspension and tires. But, as soon as you modify these, you're losing the value they add.

 

it has 20 less hp and 430 ftlbs of torque so 37s spin easy on that and tuned looking north of 500ftlbs

 

If that's your priority, then don't even bother with a 2nd trip back to the Toyota dealer, haha. Just get the Jeep. If I had that kind of money in my budget and was looking at both these vehicles, I'd def get the Jeep. And since you mentioned only hanging onto the 4R for a few years, long term reliability won't be a factor for you.

 

I don’t like dual climate control. I like to be able to reach down without looking and make my adjustments with any/all knobs. Can’t do that with dual.

 

jeep will have to be amazing to beat the 4runner in my mind. since i run an offroad shop im in and out of both all the time. the 4runner is more comfortable, better fitting for me being 6'1, smoother on the road and has more cargo room. so im going to drive the diesel wrangler and if it anything but short of amazing its going to be a 4runner. im really going to drive it to prove the 4runner is the right vehicle and not have second thoughts

 

O and i think a done up 4runner looks way better too

 

Then get the 4R, lol. It's a great DD, though it's not going to keep up with a Wrangler offroad.

Or, if you run an offroad shop, what is better for business? Having a modded Jeep or 4R parked out front?

Ultimately, just get what you'd rather drive. If you want to run 37's and 500ft lbs, you're not going to get that without a massive effort in the 4R. OTOH, if you just wan something to drive around town in, the 4R may be the way to go.

I'm curious to hear your impressions of the two, so please post up after you drive them both.

 

I think @A&P is probably talking more about how the newer diesels have lost some appeal with the newer emissions systems. The fuel economy won't be good unless you do more highway driving. And, I've heard of people having issues with newer diesels when they do a lot if city driving. If that doesn't apply to you, I wouldn't worry about it.

I think some of the earlier issues were caused when they were rushing to build the motors due to unexpected demand. And.. It's a Fiat/Chrysler product.

 

the jeep is nice for like 3 reasons. and all are really its easy buttons. springs and shocks get you 37s, they are crazy offroad capable but any one can offroad a jeep. and the top comes off for going to the beach.

but i love following jeeps in my tacoma and making them feel bad soooooo 4runner is the suv version of that.

 

Enough said. I wouldn't have one unless it was free and even then would not be a daily driver. 2 buy backs were enough for me to bail

 

I can't disagree with that. I would personally only go diesel for hauling and towing.

 

here in Nc where most offroad involves alot of climbing rock it definitely nice to have that low end torque

Some comments on the OP's original question: I currently own a 2010 FJ Cruiser that I will be trading in on a 2021 4Runner in January. And, being a newbie on this Forum received some very useful information from members which helped me decide between a TRD/ORP or a TRD-PRO.
TRD-PRO: As with many others, I like the front grill. The roof rack looks good, but it won't fit in my garage, and I don't need a roof rack anyway. So I would have to remove it.
TRD OFF-ROAD PREMIUM: As someone else on this Thread/Forum mentioned: "The TRD/ORP has everything I want, and nothing I don't want". And that's how it turned out for me. And the "standard" roof rails will allow garage use, and an easier on/off roof rack later if desired.

Base on the MSRP, I selected the TRD/ORP, added for a sunroof, TRD Wheels, TRD Skid Plate, and some other smaller accessories. And I still came up $5,745.00 LESS than the TRD-PRO. That difference is enough to easily cover the sales tax and a set of more aggressive looking tires. And maybe even a bull-bar (?). LOL

1 What tires are you running on this ?
2 Where did you get your bull-bar and hooks ?
3 Are those side rails considered "step" or rock type rails ? Can't quite tell from the two photos.

Ok here are my 2 cents worth. I bought a 2020 TRD off-road in the preadator package with the KDSS suspension upgrade. I chose it over the TRD PRO entirely because of the KDSS. My wife and I drive around the country and the KDSS eliminates the nose dive and body roll that makes the road driving so much more comfortable. We are not hard core mudders, but do take off-road trails to see areas, we would not otherwise see. The Off-Road model with KDSS fit our needs perfectly, and the predator package gave us 17" aluminum rims and 32" Nitto terra grapler tires.

 

Those are Nitto Ridge Grapplers, and rock sliders.


@Jynarik can probably give you more details about the bumper.

the C4 and SSO both have high clearance wings that can bolt on for a more aggressive look

 

OP, consider getting your vehicle in white or black and then just wrapping it to the color you want? That way you can have a unique color. I mentioned this because you said you wanted cement but can't find them, you won't find them in a new Off road or Pro, just in that new Trail, which is a package on an SR5, so you lose the locker and crawl control / multi terrain.

 

ya been thinking of a wrap to protect the paint. also i dont understand how they can put trail on something they dont give the offroad bits to

 

I already have an SOS. I was looking at C4, but SOS had a sale.
