Do you think it's because EVs are still too expensive? Or just people's natural habit to resist change? Or something else?

 

If you have a non tesla, I'd agree. If you have tesla and do have smaller kids, or prefer taking breaks, it works beautifully. With kids you anyway have to take more frequent stops, might as well charge while doing that. I can speak on northeast I have not had any issues finding chargers. If OTOH, you tend to be the guy/gal who drives 6-8 hrs straight EV is simply not for you. On highway that 300 mile range is much lower depending on how fast you drive, temperature etc.
Honestly I think toyota is super smart in my mind. They are letting tesla et al duke it out with price wars etc. that are bound to get some smaller players bankrupt, and others seriously reconsidering their EV strategy. For for instance is going all in, but has a lot to lose with price war because they simply can not reduce costs like tesla can.

For now a plugin hybrid live RAV4 serves the purpose for most americans -- work commute all EV, road trips hybrid. Still get great gas mileage and no worry about running out of juice.

this is what is so surprising to me. I would imagine the target customers for something like F150 aren’t us coastal folks, but more south, Midwest, Texas folks. I mean I have seen plenty of trucks here too but I imagine it’s more of a need in other parts of the country. What sense does it make for ford to offer lightning?

it’s possible ford is much smarter than yours truly — and targets lightning just for suckers on the coast, who just want the truck but don’t really need it. Sell ICE elsewhere, but have lightning to point to in case someone says they want an ev alternative.

But, I agree that it's different for people who travel with kids.

 

Yeah, it's around 1400 miles from my house to My mom's place in Florida. My best time was 19 hours, but there was a lot of speeding involved. Otherwise, it's usually around 21 or 22 hours.

I have driven through the night, but I have found that the best thing is to leave very early in the morning. I've also found that taking a break after about 10 or 12 hours, and having a sit down meal reduces the jelly leg feeling that you get after about 14 hours or so, lol!

I can't imagine driving straight through like this with a passenger. Sometimes I like absolute silence. Sometimes I will have the radio as loud as I can possibly play it.

Haha! I have started to skip Atlanta and sometimes I'll even go around Chicago.

2 years ago on the way down, I was going to skip Atlanta, and changed my mind along the way. I ended up getting stuck in traffic in Atlanta for over an hour. Now, I've been going down 65 through Alabama, and cutting down 231 and cutting across on highway 10. It adds sometime, but it is worth it.

I can imagine traveling with three kids is not fun!

 

As much as I hate them being on screens ... allowing them to use it (and the 4Runner having two chargers in the back) for portions of a 7hr drive, made it almost as easy as a solo trip ... well maybe I'm being a bit generous hahaha

 

I think the ones that most people want are too expensive. Look at us 4Runner owners, what is an EV that is comparable? A Rivian R1S? I would definitely replace my 4Runner or one of those, however I don't have 80 to 100k.

Also as homeownership is fast becoming out of reach for people, I think a lot of people, myself included, don't have a place to plug it in even if they wanted one. And as of now my work doesn't have any chargers, so I'd have to make special trips to arrange for charging.

The thought of getting home from work for the evening and plugging my vehicle in at home is extremely appealing, however I don't have the option. I also don't have the money for car payment, my 4Runner is paid off and I vowed to never have a car payment again, so when this is done I plan on driving 10k beaters I can buy in cash. I am worried that eventually that won't be an option, because I don't know how viable buying a 5 to 10-year-old EV will be.

I get the road trip thing, and that will be a concern for me, but it's not like most people are driving across the country every day. My brother-in-law is in the process of buying an EV, my sister has a 2-year-old gas SUV which will be the family road trip car, and EV will be the around town errand and commuter vehicle.

Lol! I stop every 250-300 miles for fuel and to "stretch."

 

we love our Rav4 Prime. Only sees gas stations when we road trip typically, summer we get about 52 miles EV, winter about 42 per charge.

those 10k beaters aren’t all that good these days.

 

Back in the day, adding cubic inches was hard to beat.

 

Charging hassle/range anxiety, at least it would for me.

 

Naw, solar panels. Oh wait, charging stations connected to solar farms in the middle of no where.
