I'm not understanding this sentence. Seems to contradict itself. You're saying 295/70 will cause headaches but tires smaller than 35's will not? 295/70 is smaller than 35's. Its around 33.3".

Yes I understand the more positive wheel offset you have, the more rubbing you are going to have. I'm not necessarily looking to have an aggressive stance, but I also don't like how a narrow stance looks. For example, I'm not a huge fan of how bigger tires with stock wheels look. Something around 0mm to -6mm might be the answer, maybe even -12mm, but like you said, that is likely to cause more rubbing. You also have to think about how the added width of a bigger tire could cause rubbing on the upper control arm on the back side of the tire. I imagine at some point, with a big enough tire, you are forced to have a more negative offset wheel (I know some solve this with wheel spacers but I'm not going to get into that).

I know we are beating a dead horse here, but I'm bored and it's fun lol. My takeaway is 35's, whether that is 35x12.5R17 or 315/70R17, is where the line is, where if you cross this line, that's where the MAJOR issues start. Anything in the category of larger than stock, yet smaller than 35's can still cause rubbing and issues, but to a way lesser extent. And as I've said before, I'm willing to do some minor mods like trimming, BMC, fender liner alteration if I need to.

And I don't plan to cheap out and skip upgrading the UCA's if my setup requires it, so that won't be an issue.

I hear ya haha let me clarify, I meant the 295's will cause you almost as many headaches as a 35 when talking about 4Runner and rubbing. People who say 295's don't rub for them, especially with stock UCA's, are people that prolly aren't flexing the suspension a lot. And correct more negative offset means more rubbing but only typically on body mounts, fenders, liners. Too much positive offset and ppl have found tires rub on UCA's, resovoirs, frame

Why 295/70 specifically? And what is your source of information? Have you ran them? I'm not doubting you, I'm just seeing others running 295/70 or larger who do seem to wheel their trucks, such as @jvilla1971, say they have no rubbing. Also, Aired-Down Overland, one of the youtube channels recommended by someone on this thread, claims to run 285/75R17 (taller than 295/70) with absolutely NO rubbing. And I know from watching his videos that he does flex. Granted, he did do a BMC, removed his mud flap, and trimmed the front of his fender, all things I am willing to do.

Again, not doubting you. I'm just seeing different people say different things, so this all seems to be subjective, or false info being passed around that's not actually verified. Hard to know what to believe.

This is my only point I'm trying to make dude, you're reading into things too much haha. I don't rub 295's but I've chopped everything needed for 35's, I'm just saying from experience that Runners don't play nice with larger tires like jeeps

Got it. Yeah my intent was never to find a tire where I have to make no mods whatsoever. I understand that even the standard 285/70R17 may require some trimming. My whole thing was just finding out at what point the issues outweigh the rewards, and I think I've gathered enough data to conclude that 315 or 35 is that point.

Haha you're right, I definitely overthink and read too much into everything. I finally had it figured out and then you come in saying 295 will be a headache!!!! lol jkjk I understand what you are saying.

Lol! Same here actually, I'm a true virgo - over-thinker, over-detailed, too methodical. I really appreciate your work on this subject, cuz I really wanna know these things too. I too believe 35's are too much work and money, but my truck is paid off so when it isn't the wife's work daily but a bush truck for my boys, the 35's are coming.
That's kinda my point too, there's no tire larger that 275 that doesn't very often require trimming, there's just people telling you that

I've enjoyed the discussion and have learned a lot. Looking back at my original post from a week ago, I can see how my thinking has changed since even then. I tend to have an all or nothing mentality, meaning I'm going to go for the biggest and baddest or just not do anything at all. I'm seeing that doesn't really work with this subject. I do feel I want to eventually go bigger than stock, but also have to be realistic. I'm single and this is my only vehicle at the moment. I need something reliable, daily drivable, road-trippable. If I'm going to go for the biggest and baddest, I'm better off building another old TJ as a separate project at some point, but can't have everything I want all at once haha. I can tell that the guys on here are genuine and not the fake instagrammer type, so I appreciate that.
