Same! I actually really liked my '03. When the 5th gen came out, I thought it had taken a step backwards cosmetically. I've warmed up to them, but still think the 4th gens look good.

I wish they would get on with it! The fuel economy ratings of the new Tundra have me considering trading up when the 6th generation comes along. Hopefully they nail it with the redesign.

So true! Honestly, these gas prices have me really considering the next generation whenever it finally comes out. I wish Toyota would stop dragging their feet.

But, with people lining up around the block to buy such outdated technology, it's hard to blame them.

 

My feelings exactly. I’m excited about what’s in store for a 6th Gen power plant, if there will be hybrid, turbo, EV options.

 

I bet the 6th get will cost more though. Buying a new truck to save gas money rarely pays off, that break even point takes an awful long time

 

Man, we're told over and over that there's a shortage for 4Runners due to the chip shortage. Dealers are adding market adjustments because of the rarity of these things... and they made and sold more than ever last year!

 

I had my 2001 during the last gas spike phase when we invaded Iraq. I also had a puppy at home so I was going home at lunch time, therefore doubling my daily commute mileage. Over $80 a week for a 35 mile round trip commute. It sucked, but there was no way I was getting rid of that thing.

 

True.

But, I've been averaging 2,000 miles/month. A car payment is easier to budget for than fuel. Plus, by the time the 6th gen is available, I should be able sell mine and put a big chunk down.

It will also require that the 6th gen is appealing enough for me to want to trade up. Saving gas money would really just be an excuse to help me rationalize it.

 

I was about to give you wise advice about getting a small efficient car for daily duty…

But then I though better of it when I looked at my little mazda in the driveway. Poor thing has been sitting unused for at least a month, and Im worried the thing wont even start.

All because I really really like driving the 4runner around, even if it’s not for off-roading.

 

Agreed! That's why I originally wanted a Tacoma until I realized the 4R was a better vehicle for my needs. I think the 4R looks fine now!

 

Oh, I'm never getting rid of it just because of gas prices. I would just be more tempted to trade in if the next generation gets ridiculous fuel economy.

I've thought about that before, as well. Even when I lived with the ex, I almost never drove the TC. And, I actually like driving that car!

Mazda OEM batteries suck and go dead with infrequent use.

 

Mazda’s generally suck period lol. Talk about rust piles. In my case, it’s a 2004 5speed awd tribute. Hand me down with 38k miles on it. The limited use it’s gotten all it’s life
means everything is dried out and leaks. It’s been serviced by dealers a few times in it’s life, so that means the oil plug leaks from impact gun abuse. Basically, If I dont use it frequently, it will die. I really need to take it for a drive. At least it actually is interesting to drive.

 

Weird. My brother had its twin - escape, and it was incredibly reliable, and he rarely drove it between living in Boston and then working from home.

I had a 2005 Mazda 6. Just as reliable as my 2001 4Runner and 2014 QX70.

But I always see them jumping Mazdas at the local dealer.

Some models had rust issues but those problems are long gone.

I also think Mazda has the best auto design language out there. Puts Toyota, Nissan and Honda to shame. Not even close.

If I was Toyota I would hold the course. All the design, machining, dies etc all the fixed costs have been paid for for years and the 4R has got to be a cash cow for them.

When reviews still steer toward a 4R when a new Bronco just came out and the 10 plus model year vehicle that’s saying something.

 

BMW and Toyota/Lexus have the same disease.

 

Ford does do something right though that I wish toyota would take notes on. Bronco stock with 35s. A raptor (in general) and then raptor on 37s stock…

Yeah, but I’ve read so many auto reviews that complain about the 5 speed transmission, bad gas mileage, as well as outdated interior design, and lack of tech. Auto manufacturers know that shiny objects and electronic gizmos attract more customers and sell more cars.

 

Im surprised by complaints on the lack of tech. I don’t really know what more I’d want tech wise in my TRD pro. Literally just better camera quality, maybe vented seats and it’d be totally perfect.

 

I agree. But let’s not forget auto reviewers think 0-60 and skidpad numbers are specs full size truck owners fret over. They’re quite out of touch with those buyers. Same goes for the 4Runner because the sales volume seems to speak for itself.

My 2014 QX70 had the perfect amount of technology/safety features. Just enough to be helpful but not enough to be intrusive.

My 2018 4Runner is close. I’d love the dual zone AC and climate seats but not much more. Maybe RCTA and BSM as both are just alerts.

 

I like the tech in my 18 ORP. Coming from a 3rd Gen 2000 SR5 it’s a big step up. I don’t want push button start or all the advanced safety features and their electrical gremlins of 20+ MYs. I like the knobs and levers. I like the engine. I’ve done a few of @Old Red ’s electrical mods to footwell lighting and the accessory meter. And my own lighting and camera mods. Dual zone HVAC would be nice and certainly vented seats. My big gripe is the inability to recirculate the air when defrosting the windshield.
Everything else works for me.

 

Yeah I like minimum tech. I would have liked a key but to get the softex had to get keyless. I like the knobs for climate control too

 

If the ‘22 had full speed cruise control, with the addition of BSM which was added, I agree about tech hitting a sweet spot for my needs.

 

If it’s like that automotive press mock ups, I think it’ll be okay. I’m less worried about the remodel and more worried they do some silly color like Lime or the red. Personal taste but there’s a point where I feel it’s too much of a “hey everyone look at me “ feel to it

 

Same here on the minimum tech. My wife's Kia has all the climate controls on the touch screen, drives me nuts.

 

Heck, my wife's 2008 Prius is the same way. Try jabbing at a 13 year old touch screen in full daylight while trying to keep your eyes on the road. God made knobs for a reason!
