Hahaha fair. Like a said engine and turbo tech has come a long way in a short period of time.
The Raptor R just came out last year right? I think it was Ford's answer to the TRX. Both no compromise high output engines.

Hard to beat a big supercharged V8 made with no regard for emissions, sold in limited batches and only available in vehicles selling for over $100,000.

I think Toyota's new 4 cylinder turbo being offered with 400hp variants and 600hp variants is pretty darn impressive.
(I just re read this article and realized it will be coming out with 600 hp variants... Which is pretty killer for a little 4 banger.)

    @Turd Ferguson
One thing to consider is power to weight. I think the Raptor R and Ram TRX are both over 6k pounds.
So any reasonably lightweight car making 600hp is going to walk away from them.

I hear whispers of a new Celica on the horizon... A GR Celica... AWD system pioneered by the GR Corolla... with the 700 hp capable engine I was mentioning.
Now that will be a fun car.

    Is that a typo?

This is the 3.5 V6 from the 3rd gen Tacos.

    This is a huge factor!

I have a group of friends who are car guys (LS swaps, Mopar, Fords mostly) and one of them has a Honda CRX. I don't know what engine it has. It's not crazy powerful, but IIRC it's around 190 WHP. That doesn't sound like much, but at under 2000# soaking wet, it hangs with cars making twice that.

Side note: The return of the All-Trac Celica would be awesome!

We should take bets on what hits the dealerships first. Toyota’s 600 HP 4 cylinder or their solid state batteries. My guess is neither. ;)
Also that 2.0 liter truck engine they mention sounds like a winner. I’ll take two.

    But its insured for $15k.

You're right. We'd just have a bunch of threads in a few months about shitty gas mileage and a lack of power.

I think you guys are right. The gearing with a turbo will be different. You will not need to spin it very high in the RPM's to make usable power.
I noticed this riding in a Ford with the twin turbo 6.
More usable power right off the bat. depending on the air.

Wait, that's right. I only financed $5k three year loan because I sold my 89 Toy pick-up to cover the other $3,500.
It was the company owner's then a forman's truck and he got pissed and left when we undercut him.

I was thinking about something funny as we argue about the 4Runners 270 or 278 HP. A fricken Nissan Maxima has had 300 HP for around 20 years. o_O

    I forgot about the torque.

This is a good video comparing the two generations. He actually busts out a tape measure for the interior space too.

Thanks. I'm curious to see the verdict on rear seat legroom. It didn't look all that great on the one I looked at.

The rear seat leg room is definitely smaller. The space to enter at the door over the wheel well looks tighter too. Reminds me of my old Cherokee. The rear cargo area is smaller too. The vehicle got longer, wider and taller but somehow ended up with a smaller interior space?

This is what's confusing to me.

The size difference didn't look significant to me in person. Although, I didn’t look at it next to a 5th gen.

But, the fact that the interior space suffered makes me think it's not going to be an easy sale for them. I think a lot of current 4Runner owners might look at those back seats and get turned off. The back seat was a part of my decision to go back from a Tacoma to a 4Runner. I don't often have rear passengers. But, when I do, they're usually adults.

Interior function and usability is the most important aspect to me. That’s the whole reason I’m owning an SUV. I’m not doing it to look cool. It’s to move people and gear. If it is significantly smaller then the 5th gen I’m going to have to look elsewhere for our next vehicle. It’s disappointing.

Yeah, I'm more annoyed with the interior packaging than the engine. They fucked up the Sequoia in a bad way as well.

And when you tumble the back seat forward, it blocks entry from the doors. You can't just set something down behind the drivers seat. It doesn't fold flat like 5th gen.

The Sequoia would have been our next family truckster if it didn’t have such a terrible rear cargo area. It’s horrendous.

It would have been great to see the Sequoia continue with independent rear suspension like pretty much all(?) other full-size SUV’s these days.

It opens up so much extra vertical space at the cost of less articulation.

I was looking at older midsize SUV’s with that trait (plus BOF, low range) for the fold-flat third row + under-trunk storage but ultimately ended up here.

...^^^... This is why I bought one of the very last 2024 T4R's in the Atlanta area. Owned many Toyotas in the past and traded often, but this one is a keeper for long term. Not a big fan of the turbo, the 4 cylinder engine or a battery bank for longevity. Ok for a race car, but not for a long term family car.

Previously owned many Toyotas and had 4 RAV4's from 2019 to 2023 and those are super cars and will get another one soon for the wife. That 2.5L NA with the 8 speed is a winner on all fronts on the RAV4.

Yes, the 2024 T4R is a bid dated, but that is ok with the time tested 4.0L and 5 speed. Sometimes ... less is more ... to me.

I think the hybrid battery is what screwed everything up. They tried to fit too much stuff in the same space. I wonder if anyone has removed the third row of seats and created a level cargo area.

The battery hump/third row seat platform still won’t be level with the cargo area floor if the seats were hypothetically pulled out.

It could certainly be level if the battery was yanked and the third row seats were removable but only until it hits the second row.

For a flat surface from the rear over the folded second row, the cargo area would probably have to be raised significantly 5th gen 4Runner style.

See: folded third row in the current 4Runner, GX550 and LX600. It has a more subtle ramp at the cargo area opening but there’s still a couple inches in height between the folded third row seatback and the second row seatback.

    Toyota packaging!

Just looking at that, seems like the front bumper hangs quite a bit lower and further forward on the 6th gen compared to the old one, no?
