I never have. Of all the things to electronify, this must rank as one of the more ridiculous ones.

It's better than the POS parking brakes we have now. Ever tried to remove the shoes for cleaning and service, with the S-shaped nails holding the shoes? Whoever designed the mechanism at Toyota probably watches hentai tentacle-rape porn.

I thought about doing a google search on hentai tentacle-rape but then had second thoughts.

The parking brakes are what worry me the most about doing my own brake service. Even so, I still think I'll bite the bullet and do it myself when the time comes.

^Laparoscopic surgeons will feel right at home installing the shoes through the little access hole on the hub flange.

Yeah, I have a local shop do the parking brake on my Honda and will probably have them do it on my GX. I like to use manual parking brakes but that doesn't mean I want to mess around with changing them out.

^I think most shops during brake service don't remove the parking brake shoes. The mechanic can just flush the area with brake cleaner; then pull the shoe slightly away from the backing plate to brush some grease/antiseize in the contact areas. Parking brake shoes typically don't wear down fast enough to need replacement over the life of the vehicle.

Come to think of it...I think I have only had it cleaned and the cable adjusted, not straight-up changed...so that sounds about right.

Most first time DYIers end up redoing the parking brake shoes or at least the hardware because they don't back off the adjustments for the shoes before pulling the caliper/drum and it damages the shoe's mounting hardware.

^Yep, including next year's 4Runner. (You can tell it's the 4R from the powered rear hatch button)

Blame the Ford Bronco for making the handle fashionable.

That's what people want though. More features they will never use but the window sticker is larger so they can brag at the mall.

I didn't know it was the Bronco that created the fad for having that passenger grab handle. Interesting.

On a flat surface, I set it then shift into park. On a hill I shift into neutral then set it and shift into park plus turn the wheels into the the curb like you should. This pratty much goes for all parking brakes.

When I drive the Lexus, the electronic parking brakes sets itself. I hold the foot brake until it's done when parking on a hill.

I doubted you at first. Then I zoomed waaaaaaaay in and realized that you were right (for once!). I may never doubt you again, until the next time.

Yeah. I wonder when the Tesla-sized infotainment screen finally makes it over to Toyotaland.

My no-name AliExpress Android head unit has the climate control app built-in, but my 2010-era 4Runner has no way to interface with it.

You should Google "one man one jar". It's about a man using a clear glass jar so he could monitor his blow-by oil level easily

As far as setting the parking brake before or after shifting into park, I think the most important part is to do both before releasing the brakes.

I do have a floating screen unit but it doesn't cover my vents and is nice for navigation but I wouldn't go larger. There is a china tesla screen option for Runners. No thanks:

Something I forget to do almost every time. Depressing the parking brake is literally the last thing I do before I open the door. Oh well...

It’s acceptable to a lead master tech at a the toyota dealer I took mine to. “They all don’t work” or some such sentiment.

Took me a few tries, and adjusting the cable at the adjustment point under the console, to get things just right. In my case, I really need to adjust the starwheel right to the point of engagement.
