I read the first 4 pages of debate on the turbo... then skipped to the end.

So I am definately holding on to my 5th. Like that it is somewhat simple and still has a lot of stuff that appeals to mechanical old school me (manual transfer, big knobs in cabin, radio with dials, etc) with just enough tech to not be a complete dinosaur.

On the flip side, we hedged bets and just traded my wifes Honda in for a Grand Highlander Platinum (gas model). Dont knock the 2.4 turbo until you try it - its not even the hybrid max and its a night and day difference from the 1GR/5AT. At any driving speed jut squeeze the pedal lightly and the torque is instantaneous, even in eco/normal mode. Very nice to drive and I cant imagine that I would ever need the 365hp of the hybrid. And its eerily quiet. You can barely hear the engine cruising and at first I didn't even notice that start/stop was engaged the idle is so quiet. Yeah you hear it when you put your foot in it but its still nowhere as loud as the v6.

The thing that worries me most about these newer engines is not the turbo but the DI and crudding up the intake but I read the tech notes on the T24A-FTS and the 2.4 is a direct AND port injection scheme so hopefully that wont be too much of an issue.

I'm thinking the non hybrid 4Runners will get better fuel economy than the hybrids. Or, at least they'll do better then the Landcruiser.

Plus, I think the numbers will get better. It's currently based on vehicles with less than 3K miles on them, average.

I'm sure there will be a lot of variation, based on driving style.

That said, I still don't blame anyone for waiting a year or two to trade their 5th gen in on one.

Now that photos of them on transport trucks are popping up, I'm a little bit excited. Not to buy one, but I do want to test drive one for the heck of it.

Same! I drove a Taco last winter, and the LC250 in June. It's only fair :notsure:

Am middle aged. I don't change cars for no reason anymore.
First year release is never really been a good option.
    Been there. Done it.

Though plan to test drive 2024 Tacomas and LCs next service appointment.
Feel the 2.4 Turbo VS GX550 Twin Turbo
The latter has some serious power but too much electronics.

Also what's with the 2025 T4R black plastic Fenders/Air Dams - that might tarnish/scratched in hot heat of Summer

I get a very 70s retro vibe from it. Not my thing, but I don't really hate it.

I think that paint job distracts me from looking at the car, making it look not as bad. The shape is just too weird and if it were all black I'd instantly hate it. I think yellow distracts me from hating it immediately when I look at it. Give it enough time though.....

OK, I said I bet we will be aesthetically pleased by the 6th gen only once someone jacks it up and kits it out.

OK, I like this one a lot.

    It's not terrible.
I think it helps a lot that it's gray (Underground?) -- helps hide the fender flares a bit.

^ They just killed any MPG gains from the newer drive system, what I am curious about is how much of a hit it is compared to our 5th gens outfitted the same way.

I watched a YouTube video this morning, the guy said 2024 Tacomas were cheaper than comparable 2023's. So I searched Cargurus and he was correct. I'm curious to see how the 6th gen does against the 5th gen.

Went to Toyota Annapolis this morning. Only one to see. As in only one there. OMG. I would never ever give mine up for that. It was a TRD Sport, but wow. I tried to open the door and it felt like the handle was going to fall off in my hand. Just sloppy feeling and it just looked like total plastic. I said to my wife, I would be not want to take this off road. Yeah. $58k. No F Way. Super happy w what I got. Sad. to say the least.

It looks pretty nice but I’m concerned with if that little engine is going to be working hard to keep that thing moving at highway speeds and what’s the hit to the mpgs going to be.

The 4.0 often feels like it's working hard to keep up highway speeds, especially in the hills. I think the four-cylinder is going to be better, since it hits its torque peak by 1700rpm.

I often have 4 people in my 4R going 75-80 on the highway with no issues, when I am driving through the hills I gently move the shifter left to S4 and all is good.

it's an SUV with the aerodynamic profile of a brick and payload rating of 1k or less. I don't know what people are expecting but if buyers of the 6th think they are gonna get 25mpg going 80mph, they got some surprise in store.

I haven’t noticed any issues in 7 years of ownership. I just did a snowboarding trip to NH with 4 people, gear packed to the ceiling, snowboards on the roof and heavy winds and had no issue maintaining 75-80 mph speeds.

I went to the dealership the other day to look at the 6th gen. They also had some LC. I went there just to look at them in person with no intent at all to buy one (or to sell mine). Because I seemed “really” interested, the sales manager tried really hard to get me to trade in my pro. He tried persuading me to sign a paper he wrote down offering me $63k as trade in value for any car they had on the lot. Mind you I have 35k miles on it and they offered me $8k more than what I paid for 3 years ago. Maybe I’m a fool for refusing but I was shocked how aggressively they were trying to convince me to make a deal.

what in the F, Toyota totally sold out putting this monstrosity under there on the new trucks. that would piss me off having to crawl under to rip off whatever the curb left behind.

Luckily you can usually pull them off by removing several bolts.

That's funny you say that. I had mine in for a quick service the other day and within one minute, got a text from Toyota of Annapolis that they have looked over my car and want to make an immediate offer to purchase it back and I could drive home in a brand new one today. No mention of dollar amount but, wow. I was still standing next to the car checking it in for service, lol. That's aggressive salesmanship!
