How important is the V6 long term value?

I'm with you on the lacking infrastructure in our power grid to support everyone switching to EV vehicles. And that's not just charging stations along the major highway corridors, but also the local power grid that in some places have to implement rolling blackouts to handle the load. Adding a bunch of EV's charging in homes isn't going to help with that.

I also have a serious moral objection to how we are mining everything needed for the batteries for these EV's. The cobalt mines are nothing short of manual slave labor and the companies are making a ton of profit while paying the miners almost nothing and forcing them to work in awful condition and are only using hand tools. Not that coal mining was much better back in the day and the conditions oil workers face in the fields aren't great either, but they are well compensated in comparison.

 

After street riding for 45yrs, my wife sees all the fatal motorcycle accidents on the news made me promise to stop when I retired 7yrs ago. Didn’t help when my next door neighbor died riding.
Luckily in retirement we back up to BLM so in trade for no street bike I got to keep Goldie and have two Honda ATVs and a Honda SxS….my Yamaha WR450 is gone now.. I bailed pretty bad on the WR a year ago, at least I sold it for a $900 profit, great bike…..68yr old bones didn’t like bouncing off rocks. 4 wheels from now on….you might notice I like Hondas.

 

I'm genuinely concerned about the possibility of 4Runner moving from a Japanese supply base (mine came with a sticker that said 100% Japanese content) and probably being produced in Texas vs a Lexus assembly plant in Japan. I'm not concerned about all the design changes since Toyota's quality processes are proven and I'd be perfectly happy with a Gen6 with "only" Prius-like reliability which is still among best in world. I think the Gen6 will benefit from the learning Toyota gets from the new Tacoma since I'd expect Toyota to do everything it can do to keep Tacoma's market dominance and incredible brand image in a seriously competive segment full of new products from the competition.

It's hard to imagine Gen6's having near-zero depreciation like Gen5's and I wouldn't be surprised to see Gen5's become even more desirable after the Gen6 launch.

 

Toyota’s Hydrogen R&D might pan out as it can be trucked to remote locations just like gasoline is now. No need for thousands of miles of expensive grid upgrades.

 

Gumpus, where is that sticker located that says 100% Japanese content? It is attached to your 4 Runner? If mine has one I would like to see it. The driver door jamb has a sticker that contains the VIN that says “made in Japan”. Is that what you are referring to?

we all know manufacturers are smoking some stuff these days, good turbo practice is every 5k with a grade 4 synthetic like motul.

the cost difference is worth it, it’s tough stuff compared to say Mobil 1 (Mobil 1 developed the 0w-40 European blend for the Porsche 996 at the time, and believe it or not was the recommended oil. It took about 4-5k for the heat to turn it to straight molasses…..happened to a lot of guys).

 

Thanks! I could never play with an extended oil change on my R, but it's nice to know that blackstone confirms my oil still had life left in it after 5k hard miles and a lot of life after an easy 5k. VW requires oil used in their engine to meet their VW 502 or 504 standards. There are few oil's that meet that standard, Liquid Moly and Castrol are the two that I know of and what I use (I tend to use Liquid Moly but my dealership uses castrol).

 

I test drove a 4Runner for the first time a few months ago and it was the V6 engine and transmission that impressed me the most about the truck, along with the minimalist interior and the overall look. I thought there was an abundance of useable power for any circumstance I might be in, but I do not tow and drive sports cars for exhilaration. I have no idea what this truck is like offroad, but my impression was that it would be pretty much ok for any but the most treacherous terrains. I also drove a GX the same day and did not see any appreciable difference in the V8 over the V6; and found that the GX was very much a car feel like a luxury sedan. I would buy the 4Runner for the V6 and transmission.

 

I think everyone jumping on the 6th Gen hybrid 4Runner options is gunna miss the classic, beautiful V6 engine start woosh sound. I recognize a fellow Taco or Runner starting up without even seeing it. I'm holding onto my 2016

 

I've owned more V8 vehicles than anything else, so nothing about the sound of the V6 excites me. I honestly think it sounds rather unpleasant, at idle it sounds broken, and at high rpm a blender full of ball bearings.

Haha! That sound definitely has some kind of appeal to it! I love it when I get to hear a dozen of them starting at the same time.

I don't dislike the sound of the 4.0 V6, but really nothing sounds as good as a good V8. And they only get better with building and exhaust mods.

 

I'll take an I6 over a V8. V6's tend to sound a little shitty, but an I6 sounds beautiful to me.

not to bore, but the horizontal and inline 6 are proven to be the most advantageous engines (and some of the least/most reliable accordingly)

There is a lot on grassroots engine builder sites explaining why the inline 6 is perfectly balanced etc etc.

Maybe they will do that thing some manufacturers do and pipe in artificial engine sounds through the audio system...we could choose for it to sound like a 4.0, or 4.7 V8, or Aston Martin Vanquish! hahaha

 

The 4.0 in my old ZJ Grand Cherokee sounded much better than the Toyota 4.0, but still no where is good as the small blocks and LS1 that I've owned.

It's very subjective though, some people think four cylinders with 4 inch exhaust tips sound good.

 

I think some I4's can sound decent with the right exhaust.

The Toyota performance I6's generally sound pretty good with a decent exhaust.

But, I totally agree that it's subjective. And, I actually think some 4 bangers sound pretty good. They tend to sound like shit with a raspy exhaust, though.

 

I once put Magnaflow straight thru dual exhaust on a Dodge SX 2.0 non srt..

 

I had an I6 in my old BMW that thing was smooth

 

I could give a damn what it sounds like. It's the off-road performance - the torque available at idle speeds - that counts with me. Why when I bought a Jeep Wrangler it was a 2006 - last of the old I6 engines. Just won't stall even if I don't touch the throttle going over tough terrain (manual tranny).

 

I agree. But, if you look back, I was just replying to another post that said that nothing sounds as good as a V8.

If you're all about low end torque, you'll probably want to snag a 6th gen, as the turbo 4 is going to have way more usable torque than the 1GR.
