Not saying you’re a butt pipe - but people with gaudy/flashy/obnoxiously loud vehicles tend to be butt pipes while driving them

Like the Harley driver this morning in front of me at several lights blasting his music at full tilt and free revving his engine every 3 seconds at 6:45 am. That’s a butt pipe.

 

As long as you care about damaging your vehicle, you're just as "vulnerable" as everyone else on the road. Seriously. The dudes/dudettes with lifted vehicles, loud exhausts, expensive aftermarket parts, shiny paintjobs etc. just screams to me that they're more vulnerable than me in my 16 yr old stock 4x4 Tacoma with no clearcoat, rusty wheels, and dents/scratches galore. I haven't made a claim or been in an accident in 20+ years, which sorta indicates that if we collide in some manner, it'll be 99.9% likely their fault, and I'll just pocket the payout and keep on driving.

If you really want some presence, you need to get an old pickup with as many crushed quarter panels and dents as possible. Replace the bumpers with railroad ties. For extra presence, load a stack of pallets about 4 feet higher than the cab roof and strap it down so nothing gets away, but loose enough that it sways slightly when swerving between the yellow and white lines.

 

Any of these options would give you great road presence.

 

I once went to a Jeep enthusiasts gathering in South Jersey. When I arrived, they give you a white piece of project board with a marker and ask you to list your mods and place it on the windshield.

I was a completely stock Wrangler Rubicon. But as a joke, I wrote the following:

"Covertly mounted twin 50 cal. machine guns".

LMAO! I seriously Google imaged these earlier today, just got disrupted and didn't have a chance to post it lol.

 

Probably about 10 years ago I used to see a restored WWII Willys at the local car shows. Not only did it have a M1 holstered on the dash, it had a 50 cal mounted in the back. Of course they were replicas, but either way I'm sure they made people look twice in traffic, haha.

Personally, I do. The vehicles already terrible enough on mileage, and I spend enough on gas. I personally wouldn't spend a ton of money on mods that are mainly for appearance, that would also cost me three, four, even five MPG.

Depends where you live I guess, and how you use it. I do 300 miles a week just getting back and forth to work, and any trails are going to consist of another couple hundred miles of driving just to get there.

It's not even necessarily about the cost of fuel, but about the lost range.

Kidding aside, a 1" lift with some 255/85/17's along with one of those Yakima Load Warriors on top of your normal rack will give you a larger presence without messing with suspension geometry too much...

 

I would think for visual presence, adding lights might be a way to do so.

 

Yes... and this is one of my long list of concerns.

I don't understand how articulation isn't effected by bigger lifts. Obviously it is my lack of understanding where suspensions are concerned.

I used the word "intimidating" in an effort to further expand what I meant by "greater presence". And with the right accessories, any truck can be made to LOOK intimidating.

Yes, it definitely has style. It's pretty raw though. Cab is entirely stamped heavy steel and it's LOUD. Drum brakes have no vacuum boosters so strong legs are required. Steering is also unassisted (I call it Armstrong Steering) but that's offset by a large diameter steering wheel and a low-ratio steering box (many complete rotations to turn wheels to lock/limit). Solid axles front and rear.

Reliable as a hammer.

I keep it in near mechanically perfect condition and don't put too much concern into appearance. I tell people it's nice enough to own but not too precious to use. Kids climb on it, I transport gravel and gardening stuff, ect. It has the scars showing 60 years of use and that's fine by me.

Personally I'd put one of those big baskets on the roof to make the vehicle look bigger before I'd lift it and learn about the unintended consequences of a lift.

If you want a slightly louder exhaust I think there's got to be some middle ground between the stock exhaust which is designed for silence and the obnoxious fart cans that make just about anybody angry. I only listened to one on YouTube and it sounded nice to me...like mild exhaust presence versus basically none. But as a former motorcycle guy I have to agree with the comments that exhaust changes can create enemies. And you do risk creating droning noises any time you alter a stock exhaust system.

Don't forget the obvious one...run with your headlights on all the time. Motorcycles use their brights during daylight to help increase presence...not sure if that makes sense for our vehicles. If you do lift your truck please don't forget to re-aim your headlights if necessary.

I put a magna flow on my 2012 just to open it up a little. It is a mild decibel difference, enough to hear and sound good, not obnoxious.

 

Same, it’s not loud enough for my wife to yell at me but is loud enough for the neighborhood kids to leave the game of street football and let me pass.

Yes, I look the look of the PRO.

I've already put on the Predator tube steps, along with the OEM rims and tires. I have the OEM roof basket for the pro along with its mounting hardware. Frankly, I'm a bit intimidated by the installation.

Do you still have the running boards? Can you send a pic? If they fit a 2017 SR5 P I can take them off your hands.
