Hate to admit it, but the Ranger Raptor will destroy Taco/4R TRD Pro/Trailhunter sales

I wondered If they own any of BMW with the Supra using drivetrain.

I also read that Hino built the FJ. Toyota shipped them drivetrains. That was new to me, but makes sense on limited production items.

I guess that explains the GR86. I haven't seen any Subaru sports cars in long time like GR86 in a long time

Wow. So absolutely NO trucks are dip galvanized? As for example, all Subarus are? This is very significant. I would consider this to be a major consideration for a possible 4Runner buyer who really knows that they won’t ever be going anywhere that a Subaru wouldn’t be capable of getting them to (which in reality is a lot of 4Runner buyers). So basically, you’re saying that buying a 2024 4Runner has the equivalent nightmare rust proneness as buying a car in 1970 (before they made strides to improve upon the rust issue…like they DID do with Subaru Outbacks and Foresters)?

I’m still a little unclear from your post however if getting undercoat rust protection procedures done to a new 4Runner (from day one) would negate these increased rust vulnerabilities, and whether or not religiously having it undercoated would give it the protection that’s as good as a frame that was dip galvanized. And for the comparison I am assuming that you’re getting the undercoatings done by a very thorough place who does it right with skilled employees, not by a company with unskilled 18 year olds who just don’t care and cut corners. Seriously lol, I might pass on a 4Runner if I have to fear rust (more so than a dipped frame) even WITH routine oil based undercoatings.

In fact, I don’t typically think about buying “Forever Vehicles”, I usually trade them within a decade, but the major reason that I am considering a 4Runner is for it to BE a forever vehicle for me (that I can pair with other temporary vehicles over the next few decades). This game plan of mine doesn’t seem worth it if I was mistaken about the rust risk level of undipped trucks.

I wonder if they had Mexican steel in them. I hand a 93 Ramcharger and it was the nicest rusty one. J-joint eyes on drive shaft wore out, I could push ball joints in by had almost, axle seals and bearings. Magnum engine very good though.

Yeah I always thought AWD would be pretty cool. Amazing how fast you can go around a curve with AWD, Xreas and bald tires in a box car. I'm pretty impressed once I understood Xreas and pushed it using manual shift. How I was schooled on VSC and Trac. I'm glad it's gone. I realized I couldn't really turn it over and I thought I would just see how far I can push a box car. Amazing. It's safer riding and driving like a truck now I understand how the AWD works all the the time.

The ones in the 80s went 300k constantly. There's a lot of Subarus and 4runners here for the value. Poor people like 300k+ cars.

I started respecting Subarus after we were hit with a terrible snow storm back in 2019. The little Subaru crosstreks were zipping through piles of snow as if was nothing. Snow in Pacific Northwest is a totally different animal.

I miss the full time 4x4 of my '04 grand cherokee. You're right, they stick to the road like glue but have their limitations (ask me how I know). Offroad they are great as well. I would have bought a limited if:
    1. I had the money at the time
    2. They didn't have hideous looks :crapstorm:

I wouldn't consider myself poor anymore and I like 300k+ cars. That's why I bought the 4runner. Maybe that's why I'm not as poor anymore

Exactly value. I want a 500k+ 4runner. The interior quality holds up so well over time with a little care. I never think about the trip in a maintained 4runner with high mileage just the gas money. Nothing like gas instead of payment.

Change the fluids regularly and coat the frame regularly, I don't see any reason why it can't make it to 500k miles.

I been collecting seals, axle rebuild kits, water pump, gaskets from Toyota. After 20 years they quit making parts for them. Maybe sooner now, but there's so many 5ths and such a long run I hope not. I thought about collecting a transmission to have. I would be driving my 2001 if I could have gotten a Toyota transmission. Hits 20 years old and not available overnight. I will try to find a core in the junkyard for the $2000 core charge. I really believe I would be driving my 97 Limited if I hadn't installed a limited-slip out of an 88 Supra. No real slip and especially not on black ice.

It's all relative. If you put 20-25k/yr on it, yeah, you may see 500k. But at 10k/yr, I doubt it will be around in 50 years

If garaged parked it may have a chance to last 50 years, but with major repairs.

It will be a long time before I get the next 100k no more than I drive now. I doubt this country will last longer than my transmission anyway. Everytime I get over 300k somebody totals it. I might have this one a while although I always got more from insurance than I paid it if it was clean regardless of miles. I guess they know to. I first got it I was backing and turning, instead of using mirrors like always I got mesmerized by the new backup camera and forgot the front. 1st bumper cover. Killed deer with 2nd one. I can live with replacing bumper covers if that's all. Might pay to get a good steel bumper with deer spike

On old National Geographic and other shows you used to see old Land Rovers but now it's old Land Cruisers.

When Toyota introduced Land Cruisers in Australia, they took 70% of market share from Land Rover in a matter of a few years lol.

I had an AMC Eagle 4wd wagon. That thing was really good on snow. It was dad's old mail vehicle. He just loaded a chain saw and went no matter what. I like the square body Jeep's with the 4.0. Always wanted a 2 door, but all I saw were 2 dr government Jeeps. My cousin had 275k on a Cherokee and liked it. I think it's how you drive and maintain anything. I like Ram trucks with Hemi's. Just transmission problems. They had 5 different transmissions at one time and not a good one until now. 25mpg and fast

They had both Cruisers in Australia for a while haven't they? I saw a test on them. The Prado is a 4runner I think. Seems like there's another model. I think I would just go for a new Land Cruiser and see if it's still a little more than the other models if I was going new. Older Cruisers were going pretty cheap I thought at Barrett Jackson auction. They probably get stolen and shipped to middle east most

I read where Toyota and Panasonic were about to develop a solid state battery that will go 1200 miles. Their problem will be raw materials just like now from China. I think the stopping and starting production is hurting quality along with emissions standards. Commonality may help stop that more. They said they weren't giving up on gasoline cars. I know Panasonic is the Toyota of electronics so should be interesting.

The rust problems are real. Spraying it with fluid film helps but there are a bunch of areas that you can’t get access to. Mine has way too much rust for a 6.5 year old vehicle. Above the skid plates and the sub frame pieces in the front are getting really rusty.

My mail lady uses a Japanese Hilux Surf 3rd gen right hand drive with no emblems on it. I have seen some diesel ones imported for sell. Diesel would be cool.
