Sorry gents! Just playing catch up with my messages.

Nick, I went with the electronic lock option.

Beachguy, you know what's funny? I bought it when they were first starting out with safes for the 4runner, about 2019. I paid $529 indeed. The quality is well worth it. It is very well made. It is a bit pricey, but it is gives me peace of mind in that anyone trying to break it is going to have a hell of a time trying.

No probs, IVRunner! Yes you can you can hook the latch partially and that keeps it in an "unlocked" To give a better sense, if you are looking at the safe from the drivers side, fully unlocked and unlatched, the latch "points" directly at you. You turn it anti-clockwise 90 degrees to fully engage the lock. If you turn it anti-clockwise about 75 degrees, this latches it to where the lid is closed, but the safe is unlocked.

In addition, it is battery powered. It is a button battery, if I remember correctly, a CR2032. If the battery goes dead, you are able to replace on the lock/keypad assembly. The electronic lock does retain your code, in case your battery goes dead. I'll try to get some pics and post this morning for you all.

Definitely shout if you have any more queries. I hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Sean

Exactly! The only reason I have it is in case I have to enter a place that carrying is not allowed, like a courthouse or school here in TX. Locked in the console is way better than leaving it at home.

Thanks for the perspective. Good to know the quality is good. I’m in Texas as well and my background tells me that street thieves will just move on to the next car if mine takes too much of their time. Hell I use a steering wheel lock knowing that it can be cut off pretty quickly by a determined thief. Most are not that determined. Except determined to get more meth or crack.

Too poor to buy anything now
I use a plain Walmart plastic bag that my Ex-lax came in. I can also tie it to my belt loop and use it for a holster.

    Sean/Brownersd,

Thank you for posting pics and answering questions. I still haven't heard anything from Lockerdown regarding my questions. Your post helps much.

Since this is the internet, and y'all don't know me, I'll trot out some of my credentials. I'm a criminal defense lawyer with 18 years of practice behind me. I've been a certified firearms instructor since '99; I've trained all over the country with lots of respected killers (Mike Pannone, Pat MacNamara, Gabe Suarez, Brent Yamamoto, Steve McDaniel, Greg Nichols, and others); I worked my way through college as a gun salesman. I know guns and I know the law.

If you are going to leave a pistol in your car, it is best practice to lock it up. The ConsoleVault is an easy solution to plug into your ride. It is reasonably robust, though it won't stop a motivated thief with a crow bar. My recommendation is to get a combination lock rather than a keyed lock. If you ever quickly drop something in there while you're getting pulled over by a cop, the police won't be able to force you to give them the combination, but they can easily take your key from you and open the safe. Cops can and will search your vehicle without the legal authority to do so (and then they will lie about it), but they won't be willing to destroy the safe with a grinder if they don't actually have a warrant.

The headrest safe, while interesting, suffers from a significant flaw: you cannot discretely stow a pistol in there. If you raise the pistol up that high, someone sitting in a parked car nearby is going to see you sticking a pistol into the headrest. Then Suzy Soccermommy calls the police and you have an hour of time wasted as you patiently explain to a cop fourteen times that you weren't pointing a gun at anyone. Additionally, the entire headrest can be removed. So a thief can simply pull the headrest, take off with it, and cut it open at home.

If you have a long gun, look at the TruckVault. It takes up a chunk of space in your cargo area, but is a secure way to carry a smaller rifle or shotgun.

Lastly, I'll say to use your own best judgment. The gun community is, oddly, filled with a bunch of Karens who love to go around pointing out rules. 'You can't do that!' 'You must do this!' Whatever. Sometimes you'll need to leave a gun in the car. Sometimes you'll carry a gun in violation of the law. Just don't be an idiot. Manage the best you can. At some point you'll be in a rental car, and won't have a ConsoleVault, but you're about to enter a venue with metal detectors. What do you do? You stuff the pistol into a bag and stash it under the rear seat, or something like that. And it's imperfect, but there's still a 99.9% chance that when you come back everything will be fine. Of the dozens of cases I have seen that involved guns stolen from cars, in every single case the car doors were unlocked. Yep, some dummy left a pistol in his glove box and didn't even lock the doors. Lots of dummies, in fact.

Carrying a gun really isn't that difficult. The rules aren't that complicated. If you just don't act like a retard, you'll probably be fine. If you are motivated enough to really educate yourself on the subject, I recommend Andrew Branca's book (at least until I write my own book).
