I don’t think Toyota is that slow. If they planned on releasing a 2022 “Trail Hunter”
with a special feature set that need to be approved through the correct channels and prepared for, etc., they would have long ago secured the name for it, since they would already be preparing to build it by today. I think it’s far more likely that the trail hunter moniker will be something we see with the new generation in 2023. Of course, as always, I could be wrong. What do I know?

I agree. Look for it in the next generation model. It may even replace the Pro.

Jeff's latest blog says there will be a new trim added, with the two trims already mentioned deleted.

With a new gen supposedly coming in the near future I can't see it being power train (engine, trans) and don't think it would be a premium off road version above the already premium $$ Pro. So maybe fluff, IDK. Gonna wait and see, can't wait until 2023 tho ...

    From the text:
Even though I already know what new trim level is replacing 4Runner Venture and 4Runner Nightshade for 2022, I am not allowed to reveal it until Toyota makes the official announcement.
    ...
What do you think is missing in the Toyota 4Runner lineup right now – is it something sportier, or maybe something more luxurious, or more “off-roady?”

"Trail Hunter". Am I the only one who thinks that name is truly terrible?

Lets hope it at least comes with some offroad equipment above what any of the other trims offer. Maybe it'll be something like the "Rubicon" or "Sasquatch" packages. Probably not though.
