    Same.
The vehicle asked for oil change and that’s when I did it. No reason to make it more complicated.

Ironically that was common when the 1GR-FE was designed at the turn of the century. However, oil technology (and prices) has advanced considerably since then.

Lesson for everyone. Don’t act on anecdotal data.

engine reliability through the range of time
that we own the vehicle, is what everyone cares about. In other words, no one cares to maintain the car for the benefit of its next owner.

will these eager oil change schedule make a difference to you? Probably not.

4runner has established statistically proven reliability. The vast majority of owners are not religiously changing the oil

Perhaps your taco would go 600k instead of 550k, with a more eager change schedule.

I don’t think that additional 50k towards the tail of its life would matter for most owners. They would have sold the car before then.

over maintenance for zero effective gain

You guys kill me with these posts...lol. Energizes my anxiety levels!

I currently have 2,100 miles and was just going to bring it to the Dealer for an oil change at 2,500 miles but now that I think about it - would an oil change tech be savvy enough to clean all of the break-in glitter out of that oil filter cap/housing on their own accord, without me (customer) asking?? Its something *I* would clean out if I was changing the oil myself ... now I am rethinking my strategy here. Stop making these break-in oil threads so I can settle on what Im actually going to do lol

    It’s not a Martian rover.

If your 1grfe performs at the 95 percentile longevity, instead of 98 percentile, due to more eager oil changes, will it matter to you?

My oil smells strongly of gasoline at 5k miles so I change it. Presumably due to mostly short trips.

Did the first oil change in the 2024 4Runner TRD PRO at 1450 miles. I also noticed metal in the filter pleats. My guess is the early oil change on a new car is not really necessary considering the filter stopped all the metal from circulating in the engine. I still did it because of the cold temperatures where I am at and was not sure what condition the oil was in. The oil was very dark, so glad I did it.

Will continue to change the oil every 7000 miles or so depending on how hard the vehicle gets used and the temperature. I ordered genuine Toyota filters and drain plug washers online for cheap. Purchased Mobile 1 Advanced Full Synthetic at the local Tractor Supply for cheap.

This is not the case. These filters are not magical and have to balance oil flow, even when cold, against filtration effectiveness. If your filter is really good at removing fine particles, then it is not good at offering oil flow and potentially causing oil starvation (or bypass to open).

I have done oil analysis on a new car, and the filter does not come close to removing all metal. I will post the results of my first oil change for 4Runner here, I am certain metal levels would be high. High metals = more abrasive particles circulating in the oil. Think fine sand paper.

This is exactly why I avoid buying off-the-lease cars.

You absolutely should care, general public estimated long-term reliability of the car is exactly what your resale value is. In a hypothetical scenario where there existed conspiracy by all 4Runner owners to never change engine oil, you would see the market responding by severely penalizing resale value.

lol oh boy, here we go. Religion politics and oil brand/frequency should be taboo subjects on this forum. People get their panties up in a bunch because others don’t use same brand or same frequency as they do. Let’s not go there!

Break-in oil changes and prefilling the oil filter. Bring on the naysayers!
    :D:D:D

I went through with magnification on my filter and there were no larger chunks of metal. My oil looked like root beer colored pearlescent paint though at 899 miles.

I have been watching the obvious guys, Scotty, Ahmed and Piotr (I think that's how we spells it, Toyota Maintenance is his channel)... Another guy that I've just recently discovered is Lake Speed Jr. (The Motor Oil Geek). His father is a NASCAR dude and Lake Jr. worked for Gibbs Racing. They even did a dyno test or something on prefilling oil filters proving the point you should prefill your oil filter (there is a technique to pump oil through the system without starting the car and I forget the name). For my horizontal mount filters, I wet the entire filter surface and fill it to about 1/3 so that it's not pouring out when I install it.

Oh yea, well my car guru “The Car Nut Guy" says you don’t need to pre fill the oil filter. Only a race engine built for a specific purpose benefits from pre filling an oil filter. So there! :duel:

I hear what you’re saying, but I doubt the minute amount of metal that makes it past the filter is going to do any serious damage to the engine.

Toyota dealers use Mobile 1, rebranded as Toyota oil, which they charge a premium for. I buy the same Mobile 1 oil wherever its the cheapest, which is never at the dealership.

Brand of oil doesn't matter, as far as oil filters I've only heard negative things about Fram.

Occasionally, you can get the Toyota motor oil ordered through your local dealer at parts.toyota.com I was able to, last year, buy 12 quarts at something like $2.59 a quart. That particular package was on clearance and I could only get one of those boxes.

OEM filters that sell for $8 at Walmart, etc. sell for under $5 through the dealerships using that parts.toyota.com service.

Local dealers set their final pricing, so you sometimes have to shop around. I like to order non-fluid items using the ZIP code 36601 because they usually have great pricing like one of my local dealers at zip code 92108 but I get free shipping and miss 8.25% tax

    Nah

if I am trading the car in.. you can bet I don’t give a sht. That final oil change, air filter, tire? Nope

if getting rid of a car why would an individual care about the statistical impact from a single lax just-in-time action, on the resale of said vehicle?

    Human psychology.

My ORP was made 7/23 - I did first oil change at 1,250 miles. The oil that came from bottom of pan and filter housing was filled with fine metal particulate. It was present in filter fins as well. It showed up under high powered light when poured into my 5 gallon bucket - looked like metallic paint. I was surprised how thin it was - poured like water and was very dirty looking! I am glad I did a break-in oil change. I will definitely not go more than 5,000 miles between next change. I hope I can get the 1 year service at it anniversary date. I cannot believe they will not do it for free at 5,000 miles or 6 mos. vs 10,000 12 mos.

In aviation there's a saying, 50% of maintenance is caused by maintenance. Change your oil too often and human error statistics will catch up with you. Spill oil somewhere and burn, leave a rag under the hood, strip a skid plate bolt, pinch a filter cap O-ring... :stirthepot:

With 4th gens it was common for dealer lube techs to forget the plastic bottle under the top-mounted filter receptacle, until the serpentine belt rubs a hole in the bottle and dump oil all over the place.

Canvasback cargo area covers. TRD Wheels. TRD Running Boards.
The Car Care Nut says dealers use Brown and Slippery which is what is in the 55 gallon drums in the shop. That is not the same oil that you find in the Toyota branded oil at the parts counter.
