It’s one of those stupid internet abbreviations. When someone didn’t want to read a long article they’d say “Too long, didn’t read”.

Or “Here’s the essence of the article, if you don’t want to read it all”.

In the linked article the author made the mod and said it reduced the sulfur smell but he still noticed it when hitting the throttle hard. In the comments he said he made another mod to it by cutting out his first mod, way back, and would test it and provide an update. Three years later, no update.

WTLDR- The article did say the exhaust inside the vehicle was less noticeable, just not gone completely. I'd be down for having a muffler shop make the modification @Burnt Taco had done - a side exit makes much more sense. At least most of the exhaust gets affected by the air moving by the truck on the side rather than exiting into that whirling mass of air behind the vehicle that goes nowhere, only to be sucked into the cabin.

I cruise around back roads quit often with all the windows down and have never noticed the sulphur smell.

    stock off road exhaust.

I have considered moving to a side exit pipe tho.

    Hey ElectroBoy,
I did a side exhaust on my earlier and current T4R’s (albeit a little different than the OP’s) and mine alleviated the sulfur smell totally.
maybe I got lucky or mine is moved out just enough. You can see it in my build page.

Just joking. Shared this with her and we had a good laugh. She simply made a suggestion. Been with her 34 years. She's obviously been a keeper.

I’m a little late to post my mod to the exhaust tip exit but, I only did this for one reason.
And that was to stop the exhaust heat from warming my shin’s up while standing there to access the rear hatch.

Hey, if it works, use it!
I don’t drive around much with only the back window open, I’m hyper sensitive to exhaust and diesel smells. If I do open it (such as to get rid of cabin odors ;)), I have other windows cracked to get some flow-through air movement.

What does bother me is the hot exhaust on the legs when loading or unloading the back, as other have said. My 1st and 3rd Gen 4Rs had side exhaust and it never hampered any off-road situations with dirt, sand, or snow.

Every other newer model Toyota has the back exhaust, except for Tacoma and Tundra. Must be for styling and eye appeal.

PS: The black exhaust tip looks good on your 4R.

I really like what you did, and would like to take on this project. Yours looks better than most.

I checked Ebay for the stainless elbow you got, they all seem to be $38.99 + $9.00 shipping from China, arriving some time in August. I did not see the brand you got.

Do you have any photos of where the elbow is welded to the oem pipe? Or also of the cut elbow prior to installation?

@Saker - can you clarify the bold part of this statement from your build thread post:

The guy I used (doing this for 26 years at his own shop), cut the OEM pipe just behind the hanger, cut the new SS pipe just before one of the bends, expanded the opening so he would be able to angle it down (so it would not be pointed down, but horizontal), but still fill the gap with the welds.
Before welding, he measured where the tip would be positioned, cut off excess amount of pipe for the side exit, flared the end slightly and welded to the OEM pipe and then my tip on the SS pipe.

I may has made a slight mistake on that post description! Sorry for that!

That was when he did the job on my 2014. I don’t know if he did the same on my 2021 T4R.
He flaired the end of the SS pipe a little so he could slide it over the cut OEM pipe. Then he made sure the exit pipe was at the proper angle , with the tip mocked up, then welded the SS pipe to the OEM pipe.

Did you trim this plastic piece (circled in yellow) or did the exhaust guy do that?

Elbow and tip ordered. Now to find a shop to weld everything together. :)

I hope you don't mind my using photos of yours for the installation.

I appreciate the (exhaust :D) tip - I don't plan to leave unless or until it matches the setup @Saker has.
