Yeah, I hope so too - but at least the battery has to have a 100K mile warranty so that part of it is covered. And overall EV's have fewer moving parts, require less maintenance, and are cheaper to operate than ICE vehicles. And plenty of ICE vehicles require significant/costly repairs shortly after reaching 100K miles...

It seems pretty compelling when for about $20K after tax credits someone on a tight budget can get a brand new EV with 278 miles of range (per Edmunds testing) that could also save them thousands of dollars on gas over the life of the vehicle, even if it only lasts for the required battery warranty period of 100K miles.

It seems to me that mass production/adoption of low cost EVs like the Bolt, Leaf, etc will likely increase vehicle affordability over time rather than decrease it.

I hope you are right. Hopefully cars like the Civic are still available for a long time also.

Wow, I just looked up the battery warranty and replacement cost for the Chevy Bolt (several different sources). Warranty is 8 years/100k miles (I would hit the 100k mark in about 4-5 years if I DD one), and $16k-$19k for the battery. Ouch.

They're new compared to Toyota, but the company was founded 14 yrs ago and didn't put out their first vehicle until last year. Not to sound like I'm plugging Rivian but I have a lot of respect for them for taking their time, concentrating on R&D, acquiring money, support, and resources to put out a super high quality product with innovative features. The EVs being pumped out by the big automakers and even Tesla are generic compared to their truck. I really do hope they last.

Batteries don't magically fail right at 100K miles - if it's going to fail early it will fail while it's still under warranty, otherwise it will likely last at least 200-300K miles and some will go 500K+. What do you daily drive now and how much do you spend on gas over that 4-5 years/100K miles? If it's a 4Runner gas cost over 100K miles at 17 mpg and $3.34/gallon is $19,647.
[edited as my math was way off, sorry!]

Agreed, I hope they last as well. They do seem like a good company and they are making some really well thought out and capable vehicles. It's a tough time to be trying to ramp production but they seem to be doing a pretty good job so far. I reserved an R1S a little over a year ago, but they are currently not delivering any in my area as they don't have a service center here yet. Hopefully in a couple years, but we'll see...

I didn't say nor imply that the battery would magically fail at 100k. I was simply pointing out that, the amount I drive (and I tend to keep cars to 250k+ miles), I would be out of battery warranty in 4-5 years, and any battery failure afterwards would be on me.

    And 100,000 miles / 21mpg = 4762 gallons. 4762 x $3.34 = $15905. I average 21mpg on my 4Runner. Where are you getting the $38,500 number?

That is ridiculous if the cost of a new battery for a Bolt is around 1/2 of the cost of the car as new.

Can you imagine buying that used and then finding out that bill without the money to buy the battery to drive. You are up the creek without a paddle.

Sorry, the $38,500 number was way off. I got that via the EPA calculator but I must have screwed it up somehow, not sure what I did wrong. I edited the posts above to reflect that. 21mpg in a 4runner is great, so far I'm only getting about 17 in mine but that includes a lot of around town driving and not so much highway. Still, the ~$16K you're spending on gas every 100K miles would just about pay for a new battery if it did fail after 100K miles. But if you drive that much you'd save a lot on gas by driving an EV and it would likely make more sense to just trade in the EV every 3-4 years for a new one while it's still under warranty. Or buy one with a longer warranty.

Ovbiously none of this matters if you're not worried about how much you're spending on gas and don't really want an EV - I get that not everyone does. Just pointing out that an EV actually seems to make more sense financially if you drive a lot, as the gas savings really add up. Also the 4Runner would be out of warranty after 60K miles, so any engine/transmission or other failure is on you at that point as well.

Its only a couple of outlets on the run, it just happens to be in my kitchen, which is connected to my front porch. Its been over 2, 2 1/2 years now (I think) and so far everything has been fine. KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

Ya, I had to order the extension online. its a 25 foot 12 gauge. When I replace my front porch, I will dig in the ground and rewire it all, but that is not high up on my list to do, yet.

I'm sure it's fine. I just meant that it wouldn't be code compliant.

Honestly, I wouldn't be worried about it over it 25'.

I would probably do it just because it would bug me having an extension cord laying in my yard. But, I wouldn't be worried about voltage drop unless I was running like 100' 14awg cord.

Ya, I feel it’s good. I went as short as I could, because I didn’t want the extra.
