Agreed. Not that I'd do it LOL, but I note that Toyota dealers seem to have a lot of Highlanders in stock and some even discounted. I mean, no, I'd rather keep my 4R. But it's an example of how one could sell their 4R at top dollar and then buy a different but high quality car for a reasonable price. I could imagine a Highlander as my wife's car, to go with the new 4R I buy for myself later when the prices come down :D

I personally wouldn’t sell. If you’re like me you got lucky and bought one at a reasonable price. Why sell and have to wait for prices to come down. If you like the 4runner keep it and enjoy it.

Was looking at a 2021 TRD Pro Tacoma that’s coming into a dealer at MSRP. I sent over my 2020 4Runner TRD Pro info for a trade in ballpark. They came back at 48k. Which is more than I paid, but after getting offers from Vroom, Carvana, and Another local dealer around 54-55k, I don’t feel like wasting my time haggling over trade in value knowing the cost of the Tacoma isn’t budging.

That's what I did. Took the money from the 4Runner, and moved down to a Subaru Outback. My hope is that in a year, 4Runner prices will be back to something around normal, and I've got a family member who has already said they'd take the Outback off my hands when I'm ready.

If I had known this was going to happen to the planet then I would have never done it since I won't need it now.

Can you cancel it and have the balance of it put toward the principle of your loan? I was told that was possible on my previous vehicle purchase, but never did it. Was going to on my 4R, but I just paid the thing off way early instead.

Nice, good call. I'd wait around for the 6th gen, hopefully it's something cool. Personally, if I got rid of mine I wouldn't want another 5th gen.

I figure Toyota will either ruin the 6th gen by putting the 3.5 in it, or make it totally awesome by putting in a version of the new TT V6 that's going in the Tundra.

My hope is that I'll be making the decision this time next year, when I could still get a 5th generation, but enough info will be out about the 6th to know if I want to snag that or not.

Key parts are that Automakers cancelled all their chip orders, which got gobbled up by others. Once Automakers realized they fcked up, all the chips were already presold for the rest of the year.
So, new car prices are up 10% or so (this tracks with being able to get Toyotas for Invoice last year and now just MSRP), but the best part is used car prices are up 20%. Which is whats making me trade up in vehicles now. I essentially have zero or negative depreciation for driving a car for 2+ years and 20k+ miles. Thats unheard of.

One thing that article didnt mention about the current pricing situation: All the car rental companies dumped inventory when no one was allowed to drive due to shutdowns. Now that people can travel again, theres no new cars to buy because of the chip shortage. So now, regular people are fighting rental companies (and every other company that has company vehicles that did the same thing to save a buck) for the same, shortened, supply of new vehicles. But since companies dont have a choice to wait on vehicle purchases (time is money), they are gobbling up used vehicles, which is propping up the used vehicle market.

My crystal ball says used prices will go roughly to sane levels around the New Year, with new car prices to go back to normal a few months later. Now, the kicker being: Every Car manufacturer will be producing absolutely full blast to meet the demand of the previous (this) year, and will overshoot demand. There will be HEAVVVVY discounts and 0% financing next year for new cars. (Used prices will tank as a result)

TLDR: Now is the perfect time to trade in your used vehicle for a new one. Next year will be the perfect time to buy a new vehicle w/o trading in.

    For many I agree...
For us not wanting TSS etc & having the last production year without any & only 10k miles; we are staying in.
Our 10yr anniversary is this fall & we have a great trip planned for Evergreen Colorado. The 4Runner will see it's first real fun in 3 yrs of ownership (minus the snow flexing. Lol). I cannot wait!

this whole conversation still amuses me.

I can understand the folks who don't care what they drive, or don't like the 4Runner trading in while prices are up. That makes sense.

But, driving a car you don't really like for a year or two to put a little money in your pocket right now, only to hopefully buy another 4runner for cheap down the road seems silly.

I bought mine to enjoy it. I wouldn't give up a year or 2 of experiences just for some cash in my pocket. I'm glad they have great resale value in case shit ever hits the fan and I need to sell it. But, that was 0% of my reason for buying it.

100%. If you need a couple $ks that bad, maybe you shouldn’t be buying a $40k+ car in the first place. The only reason I sold my Tacoma 8 months after buying it was because I was able to get $5k more than I bought it for AND get our family back into a 4Runner, a bigger vehicle our family fits in better.

You forgot the $1k protection package. Door edge and door cup. Not even the plastic for mirrors/partial hood that most dealers charge half for all that.

Yeah, that dealership sure is special.... Refused to give me a quote for my Tacoma trade unless I took it in there. Finally stopped by 1 day on my way through Seattle. They wanted to give me $32k and wouldnt budge (this was when they were still selling 4Runners at MSRP when everyone else was doing invoice, Aprilish). I got the equivalent of $39k somewhere more sane.

(Do I still sound a little salty 2 months later?)

It seems like most of the posts about selling greater than MSRP are from California.

What is the experience through out the rest is the country? I am in Michigan and from what I can tell from online anyway is most seem to be listed as MSRP with the exception of limited models.

Is the 4R that much more popular in California or is it another “sunshine” tax?

As the OP of this thread I can tell you that I along with many others across the country have seen this trend. It isn't just 4runners but all vehicles & because 4runners hold more value than most they jumped the most (next to super cars) $ for $.

r32: Thanks for posting the article.

I put a deposit down for an incoming 21' TRD/ORP with SR around mid-March. At that time I was able to purchase with a 2-Grand discount. If I had waited another 1-2 weeks I probably would not have received the discount. Traded in my 10' FJ Cruiser with 161,000 miles and received more than half of what I paid for it new. Took 8 weeks total for delivery. Sounds like I made a "just in time" deal. LOL

Late last week, while at the grocery store parking lot, a guy walked up to me and ask if my 4R was a new one. I said yes, just 1600 miles on it. He offered to buy it for what I paid for it, including the sales tax. LOL

Haha, that guy offering to buy it is shades of 2007 in the real estate market, when everyone was offering stupid amounts of money to buy any house they could as prices soared.

Can't wait to see the flood of new vehicles next year when manufacturing catches up with demand.

I get your point but for people that don't want to lease and like to buy their cars even though they may only own it for 2-4 years, having a solid re-sell is fairly important and a factor in buying. Part of why I ordered a Pro since they hold pretty well. If I bought say a new BMW X5 and wanted to sell after 3 years I'd most likely get reemed.

Most of my job is buying and selling equipment right. Although a personal vehicle should not be looked at as any sort of investment, doesn't hurt to try and not make the depreciation sting so much.

I totally agree that good resale is a selling point. It is why I bought new instead of used, so actually it did affect my decision in that regard. I was looking at used ones, but they were so expensive with low mileage that it made sense to buy new.

For me the resale value was a non-issue because I wanted it for me and I keep my vehicles for a long time. But, it is like having a ace card in your pocket knowing that resale value is a bonus to owning a 4Runner.

Same. This 4Runner is never getting sold. I was just saying that it's nice to know I can get good money for it if shit ever hits the fan.

Going down to a dealer tomorrow who is selling new at ~500 below MSRP also. This week might be the perfect window before trade in value goes down. (People coming back to their senses)

Edit: Don't go to Bremerton, WA unless you like hidden $5k markups (that show up after they hard pull your credit). Im fairly certain they are breaking advertising consumer laws, so will (probably) not comment further until I meet with an attorney.
