It sounded like the other poster thought I really believed that meth addicts were using fully automatic weapons to steal catalytic converters. And then, suggested that I didn't understand federal law because obviously that would prevent criminals from having fully automatic weapons.

Sometimes, I read a post and think it sounds really stupid. Usually, I will ask the poster if that's what they really meant before I go off on them. And, I also don't insult people personally on here.

Usually, if it sounds like I'm saying something really stupid, I'm being sarcastic or just goofing around. If it's not obvious, please ask before you call me an idiot.

Curious, what do you perceive as the security flaw?

    I disagree.

I understand that a determined theif will figure out a way to get what they want. But, I'd bet that most of these guys are looking for a quick easy target. They might decide to screw around cutting or unbolting the shields. Or, they might just move along to the next car.

They might not deter all thieves, but I bet they'll deter some of them. Whether it's worth the money is up to the individual. If I lived in an area where cat thieves were prominent, I'd get some.

    That's crazy!

And, I pretty much agree with your last sentence. Better than nothing. Organized crooks like you're describing probably have all kinds of tools at their disposal.

I just wondering who is funding this operation, and where are those cats really going.

So an AK 47 is not a fully-automatic rifle? I'm asking out of true ignorance and an assumption,

I actually looked this up also because I wasn't sure. It seems like some are and some are not. I am not sure what the difference is.

Cat Security is an outstanding and near full coverage product. A tough install for me since it's a first, but it was sure worth it since it is one piece. Security screws at various places and two extra drilled rivets in the aft provide a huge deterrent to anybody trying to take the cats. It came naked but I sprayed it with Plasti Dip which is now wearing off. This was a pic taken at the shop after I hit that deer last year.

To any doubters about them, get one if you live or work etc in a high risk area. The parts supply chain is really getting tight now due to the strikes. Sure, Toyota isn't involved in them, but OEM Cats are nowhere to be found because the shop who fixed my car told me couple weeks ago they had a Taco or Tundra in their lot that had a Cat stolen and they had to replace it with aftermarket. I've heard aftermarkets have poor performance, so my advice is spend the money and do it. You will have less headache later.

Seems like a good option, especially for those who don't have skids.

Yeah, I think it cost me $399 for my Taco. I paid a local shop to install it for me, so that was $125.

Well dang! I’d say that falls squarely under the definition of organized crime then. I guess it makes sense, since your not going to have all the local cat thieves showing up to local junkyards with random piles of cats. I bet those warehoused cats just get passed on to the next middle man until somebody ships them out of the country.

Some are, some aren't. Any ak style rifle you can buy at your local sporting goods store is semi-automatic, like any other rifle made today (besides a bolt action, a lever gun, or muzzle loader).

I believe any rifle manufactured as an automatic or selectable fire is illegal to own unless you buy a tax stamp from the atf (i think), and your local sherriff directly approves the individual wanting the automatic. But Im pretty sure that only applies to guns manufactured as autos, and from a certain time period if I recall. Not to many of those around, so if you get the approval, you are paying out the nose for one…

A semi-automatic is nearly identical mechanically to the same it’s automatic counterpart. Usually “fully automatic” is a term used to describe any gun that looks like it could be, even if it’s not. But if a truly fully automatic rifle is used in a crime, it’s usually been modified…which is by itself a pretty heavy federal crime.

The difference doesnt matter though, as you can reasonably say a semi is more accurate and deadly than an auto.

I’m dating myself here….in the good old days, before the advent of battery sawsalls, the thieve’s weapon of choice was a chain/disc type pipe cutter. You were able to stop them by tracing the exhaust with tack welded rebar, I also lightly tack welding bolt heads.

I just got an email from someone named konrad from trail 4runner. They are doing a group buy of the cali raised skid plate / shield products. The price when ordering with them is 132 dollars for the cat shield. I don't know if this can be purchased alone or in conjunction with skid plates. This is the email I got from him.

    Hey,

We've teamed up with Cali Raised for a massive discount on ALL skid plates for the 4Runner & Tacoma. Yes, that also includes catalytic converter shields.

30% off with free shipping! Save up to $600 on a full set.

Cali Raised Skid Plate Group Buy Page

The sale is only running for a limited amount of time, so make sure you get your order in! Many items are already in stock and ready to go.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    --
    ✌ Cheers,
    Konrad - Trail4R.com

His email is konrad at trailtacoma dot com. That is the only way I can put the email here. It gets blocked if I put it the original way.

I don't know how he got our email. I also was not happy with the fact that they decided to do this after I got my shields already. Would have been nice if they had let us know what their plan was beforehand.

Hmm, so if I buy from the "Group Buy" option, I save $50, but I have to wait FIVE weeks to get it. Hmmm.... Should I?

Pearla, Cali sells an engine skid with an access door for oil changes? how much is it. That's something I would be interested in.

I got the Millercat shield installed today. Getting the front shield off was a bit of a pain and some of the bolts for the cross bars were extremely torqued from the factory.

Looks like that would trap a decent amount of heat at the transmission.
