It's this kind of thread that pushes people to say fuck it, off to Facebook or Instacrap or just quit. There's literally thousands of oil threads on the 5th and 4th gen sections and someone (OP) is too fucking lazy to hit "search" and get all the info they need. FFS.

 

Went with Toyota. $62 with oil filter and taxes. I had 5 quarts in mind, but this beast takes almost 7 I mean the 6.4L Hemi takes 7

Toyota oil is made by Exxon Mobil. I ordered a case of 6 from https://www.okpetroleummarketplace.com/, $44.99, no sales tax, cheap or free shipping.

I have no issues seeking out "what is the best oil" but usually its not actually a big deal as long as you are using major brand synthetics. Cost wise, honestly it just seems to me to be a rather insignificant cost. Similar to batteries - people get all worked up over batteries, but I mean, come on, your battery is dead or almost dead, just go blow a lousy ~$150-200 or so and get over it.

Has anybody mentioned that Toyota oil is made by Exxon/Mobil

I use Costco/Kirkland oil. On sale recently for $3.09 a quart in a 10qt box. Made by Warren Distribution (Mag1).

PS Every once in a while, parts.toyota.com will have a 12qt or 4qt box for under $3/qt. Last time was 8-9 months ago.

It would be nice if someone who made the claim that brand doesn’t matter could substantiate it. In a recent thread concerning gear oil a link was posted regarding a study of gear oils.

The differences among the gear oils were in some ways rather stark. Having read the study, and finding it credible, I am left to conclude that all gear oils are not the same. I’m not wandering too far out on a logical limb to suppose that if gear oils are not all the same, maybe motor oils aren’t either.

But I should really shut up because changing my oil every 10,000 miles with whatever I can get my hands on will be fine. I’m old, I drive well under 15,000 miles a year, and my 4Runner will never see 200,000 miles under my ownership. I’ll get sick of it long before that, get rid of it, and find myself a lovingly restored second generation K5 Blazer or third or fourth generation Bronco and bask in the memory of my glory days!

Being since exxon mobil is a huge refiner, I wonder how many other brands use exxon mobil as their base oils before adding their proprietary ingredients, like moly, grape flavoring, and other vitamins and minerals.

How many sources of base oils are out there?

Are there any boutique oils that dig wells and synthesize their own base oils?

Last year Toyota probably sold more Rav4s than some companies' entire lineups. Toyota is a huge customer of Exxon. I don't doubt they make specific oil for Toyota.

 

Yeah they just put it in a specific bottle that says Toyota.

 

Look I am a Mopar/Jeep guy. And I know Mopar oil is Pennzsoil. But I also know it is not Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. So for my Grand Cherokee I buy Ultra Platinum. My 3.6 has been running strong at 150,000 miles, while many blew up their 3.6s

 

With additives specific to Toyota

 

What additives do Toyota engines need that are not in other oil?

 

Ask those who blew up their 3.6s while Grand Cherokee is running strong on Ultra Platinum.

The 3.6 blew up because it’s a shitty engine.

 

2019 Owners manual mentions nothing about specific additives or the use of Toyota only fluids.
