As another member said, it's not the best tool for the job. Aside from the strain on the engine and tranny, you'll have to be able to stop in a timely fashion...which will be a major problem if you're driving down a city road and someone stops fast in front of you. I'd be sure to either have a trailer brake controller installed or get a trailer/hauler with surge brakes.

    Good points!

If it hasn't been mentioned, a transmission cooler would be a good idea. And, a brake controller should definitely be added.

Saw this Camry, belongs to the dealer, not for sale. So skinny compared to the modern ones. This the 4Runner can tow surely, not the skinny 3rd gen though :D

I wouldn't sweat high RPMs. I ran 3000-3500 for 4200 miles towing a trailer through the mountains. That was in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021. Probably 20k miles. One 4Runner has 85,000 miles on it, other has 25,000. They are still newborns comparative to some friends with 250k miles on theirs doing similar things.

A few weeks ago I towed my car trailer from SoCal. to MT. The trailer has brakes on both axles and a P2 controller in the 4R.
The weight of the trailer was 4,800#, as verified by certified scales. The load was evenly spread with the heaviest being over and just ahead of the tandem axles.
The air bags had 35psi in them. I drove mostly in S4, some in S3 with higher RPM's on the steeper passes. And S5 on the downhills to help cool things down.
Fuel consumption was just that, it consumes. That was my 11th round trip. 90,000 miles on the clock and still solid.
And to add, some of those trips were with no more than 3,000#.

I tow my Boston Whaler 210 Montauk NJ to FL (~1,200 miles each way) and back twice a year with my 2019 4Runner Limited. My boat/motor/trailer comes in at 4,700 lbs - (certified scale), trailer has surge breaks. Tow at about 60MPH - mostly flat on I95. I never have had any issues (except gas mileage!) six trips so far. I do change the driveline fluids every 30k miles. The weak spot on the 4Runner are the brakes. The Gen 4's with a V8 where rated at 7,300lbs.
