Best tires for stock 4Runner

Soon as I get my Mickeythompson Baja boss tires mounted next week and test them out I will do some posting. Definitely like all the good reviews on them. Did not want Nitto ridge grapplers this time around. Had them enough so I want something newer.

I'm a fan of a narrow tire. Any thoughts on a 235/80/17, it's about one inch thinner than stock. I'm also probably going to a E rating because of a thicker sidewall.

 

I don't know but I wish they made a 255/60 or 265/60 in a 20. Even 265/65 might be okay.

I was looking at those Toyos. They just look like they would chop with that tread. They make a lot of sizes.

 

wow - you are right - i thought they were 285s - i have been trying to decide if i want to get 285s...but seeing this, just changing brands may be the answer

 

They're just about perfect with stock lift and the white out makes them pop with Lunar.

Just installed a Eibach stage 2 lift so thinking about going up to 285 now...its a slippery slope with these mods. So if you want some 265s with 2k miles let me know haha.

Anyone have negatives with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S in stock size?

 

For those who immediately swapped the OEM tires for new ones and got the tire shop to give you a credit for those tires, which tire shops are those? I have tried a local tire shop chain as well as the dealer and neither one will give me a credit for the OEM tires even though they have less than 75 miles on them.

 

Is anyone sure that 255/80r17 on a stock wheel rubs / has anyone rubbed or bumped fender with this? It says so on the list . . .

I asked my shop about this size and they said no. It seems like 275s are the biggest even if you prefer skinny. I mean he didn't think the 235s were a good choice to get better traction.

 

I just ordered those exact tires Friday and they should be in today. The reviews on them were phenomenal for an all-season, all-terrain. Almost all of my driving will be highway, city, and a few dirt roads with light gravel. Based on all of the YouTube videos plus Tire Racks research and reviews, I felt pretty comfortable giving this one a try. I’ll try to update later next week after I’ve got some miles on them. The three peak mountain snowflake rating will help in the cold weather. I’m in Indiana, so we will occasionally get some decent snow, but it’s only two or three times a year. I don’t feel like I need a dedicated winter tire for my area.

 

I went with the Goodyear Wranglers. Handle snow and FS roads pretty well. Live in the Cascade foothills and they handled last winter's blizzards well on a trip to SoCal along the eastern Cascades and Sierras, Leaving soon for SoCal again with snow expected and we get 4-5 months of snow here at home.

I posted some of these in the Scenic thread, but here are some additional side profiles with the stock size KO2's. Currently running stock suspension.

 

That's probably why people sell them on here from time to time. Maybe you can find someone nearby looking for a set.

 

None. Had a couple pairs on my Tacoma for 100+K miles ... great in the rain and snow here in the Mid-Atlantic/NE. Handled light off-road trails very well. Great tires in my opinion.

 

Just got my Mickey Thompson tires Baja boss mounted today. Very nice tire. Ride good and quiet. Much better then the stock Nitto’s

 

I did 265/70R17 KO2s in C-rated after many faithful miles on some E-rated KO2s on my Taco... I had no idea these were notorious for being difficult to balance and I've never had a tire worse in wet conditions. YMMV, but my future miles will be on a different tire.

 

Discount Tire gave me $200 credit total for 4 Duelers with 500 miles on them

Apologies I just saw this! I sadly don’t have any direct side profile shots pre lift.

I do believe the shot I posted here had a 1” level kit on the front at the time as well for reference.

I wish I could find a tire shop that would give me a credit for the brand new tires I have on my ‘23 but no one around will do so. The closest Discount Tire is about 75 miles away in another state.

Alright, does anyone know the details on the alleged derating of the passenger spec tire weight rating / load index? I have heard, but never seen documented, about derating passenger tires.

my door says 113 for the passenger tire load index, which is for ~2500 lb weight on one tire. Most LT255/75r17 tires are 111 for load index, so, 2400lbs. So can I put a C load tire with load index 111 on my 4runner? I know lots of people run this. Just wondering how the ratings work.

I think the 111 LT255 would be fine, that's still 2400lb per corner, GVWR is way under 9,600lbs. I'm no expert though.

I have Falken Wildpeaks in 275/70r17, load range C. Stock trd off road wheels. Slight rub on fender well, but nothing a heat gun didn't solve. I kinda wanted to go 255/80r17 skinnies. Would be much easier to fit than 285/70s. Those skinnies just all seem to come in load range E which I don't need. Honestly the stock size is probably best

 

Same here. Same amount from Discount Tire, although my Dunlops had about 3k on them at the time.

 

Those look great! I'm going to need new tires shortly, those are high on my list. I like that they are three peak rated, and come in a good variety of sizes. Also, the fact that the non-LT sizes are rated for 65k miles is pretty impressive too.

 

Not wishing for any snow soon but it will be interesting to see how the Mickeythompsons Baja boss perform in the snow.

 

I know sometimes it's hard to tell just by looking at a tire, but I think with all the biting edges and siping, it probably will be pretty good in the snow.

Yeah I agree! Stock size 265/70/17’s and there are 2 load ranges in these. I went with they call it the XL rating and they also have the E rating. I decided this time around to stay with the stock size and not go 285’s. I don’t have enough miles yet on them and my Pro to tell what the mileage will be. But very happy so far how they ride and no noise.
