    It depends on your needs. If you're going to be off-roading in rocky areas, or doing other things where puncture resistance is particularly important, they're definitely the safe bet.

    Otherwise, they're a waste of money. They will reduce fuel economy, and affect ride quality. And, in some cases, LT versions of tires will have less siping than their SL counterparts, so you're potentially trading traction for increased load bearing and puncture resistance.

    I will say, though, that ride quality seems to be more affected by the actual brand or model of tire than load range. My mud tires ride like pillows. :D

    Yes, if puncture resistance is one of your biggest priorities, they're worth it.

    People have different reasons for choosing a tire, including load rating.

    The tire, believe it or not, impacts the ride and handling. The amount of "flex" the tire has provides a more car-like or truck-like ride, based on how stiff it is, how stiff the sidewall is. A "C" will allow more flex, and therefore provide a more supple ride, everything else being equal. An "E" is heavier and stiffer, which means you tend to have a harsher rider.

    However, the lighter sidewall is more prone to cuts off road, so some people choose an "E" hoping it lasts better off road.

    If you offroad in mud and sand, I think the "C" might be better. If the mud has a lot a tree roots, then not so much. Tree roots gouge and tear sidewalls, so "E" is probably better. Rocks, "E" is better; although the argument could be made the "C" had more flex and the "C" could be better in certain situations where you might not have to worry about cuts, like slick rock.

    So, some people think the additional sidewall strength is worth the heavier weight of the "E", while others are more concerned about how the stiffer sidewall will degrade the ride, or how the heavier tire will overpower the stock shocks, even in off road conditions, like higher speed washboard or Forest Service roads.

    Best thing to do is get a load "E" tire, just in case, and then do like everyone else, and stay off the trails where you can't damage the sidewall anyway...and that is facetious.

    Super heavy, balancing issues....

    Don't get me wrong E load may be great tire for off road, it's just heavy, therefore affecting MPG and additional strain. Plus most balancing issues i have seen are with E load.

    Thats gotta be a rental and they opted for the "drop the keys off and walk away" insurance.
    There is nobody that would treat their new vehicle like that other than youtubers trying to make viral content. Quite impressive with such crappy tires. I used to go anywhere and everywhere with my tacoma 4door short bed. It would absolutely go anywhere you had the nuts to point it including some gnarly hills and wash outs. I havent gotten mad at my 4R yet to the point i start beating it like a rental.

    I was surprised to see that the AT2 is still on their website. They're good all around tires from what I've heard.

    I went for the AT3 back in 2020 because they were supposed to be better in snow and wet. And, I kinda wanted to get them before the crowd. They've been Pretty good to me, and the treadwear has been excellent.

    The AT2s you can still buy are left over stock, so there is dwindling availability. They have been discontinued and replaced by the AT3.

    Toyo will leave discontinued tires on their website to help their distributors sell remaining lots and for consumers to have information on them until remaining supply is gone.

    Installed Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek's today in 285/70R17 and excited to try them out. I enjoyed my Cooper Discoverer AT3's on my Tacoma but wanted something more aggressive, but not quite MT's.

    So far have 200 miles on my Cooper Road and Trail AT SL load. I like them so far, especially since taking them to another tire shop to have them adjust tire pressure down to 38 from 42 and re balanced road force balance. Steering wheel wobble is gone and ride is a little softer than stock and softer than the SL Wildparks I had. MPG seems to be doing good. Have not tried off-road yet or in inclimate weather

    Yea, I went with the E rated KO2's. Haven't had them put on yet due to scheduling issues, but I'm very anxious to get the new shoes on the beast!

    Well wish me luck cuz I already bought them...lol. Haven't had them mounted yet because I can't seem to get to the tire shop, but hoping to get 'er done next week. Not concerned with MPG, and the balancing issue (if any) will be their problem...lol

    The ride is nice and smooth, some minor road noise which is to be expected with how aggressive they are. Going from stock highway tires will do that haha. They are not as noisy as my Duratrac's I've had in the past.

    Here's some anec-data for the nerds among us.

    Put 285 KO3 set on two months ago.

    Good:
    - super quiet compared to the 40K KO2 set taken off
    - track nicely at freeway speed and at slow speed

    Bad:
    - persistent steering vibration from 50-60mph
    - checked balance job shop did and see 6-7oz on each wheel (I think that's too much, but they are heavy tires)
    - took in for rebalance and they came back with 3-4oz on rears and 7-8oz on front!!!!!!

    At this point I'm certain the shop are clowns (as evidenced by their workmanship) so I can't rule that out as a factor yet.

    Went in today to ask that they be replaced with a set that can be balanced but was forced into getting yet another rebalance to "make sure it's right". I asked them "How will the third time be different?" and "Why didn't you 'make sure it's right' the first or second time you balanced them?".

    They didn't like this line of questioning and blew me off.

    Have to find a new shop. Annoying hassle.

    if they donr start with the yellow dot with the valve stem they’ll be chasing balancing and weights all day. And yes everyone, the yellow dot goes to the valve stem as i verified directly by Falken Tires when I first started using them as one shop put the red dot on the valve stem and it required a lot weight on the opposite side to compensate. Once they reorientated the tire, it only needed 2 oz of weight compared to 5.75 ozs.

    2 votes for road force balancing. Discount tire did mine in 20-30 minutes tops in and out and drive great. Prior shop took 4 plus hours mounting and trying to balance and i drove home with steering wheel wobble (plus a bonus dent in side of my car im pretty sure wasn’t there when I dropped it off)

    I’ll add one more suggestion to the mix. I recently picked up my first set of BFG HD Terrain T/A tires and I’m incredibly pleased with them so far. They are a load E, heavy duty tire so I know they won’t be popular with everyone, but coming from many sets of MT tires, these are incredibly quiet, they ride smooth, and I love the look and performance. I’ve already used them on a road trip from Washington to Kansas and back, with a bit of rocky FS roads thrown in, and the performance has been great on everything except rain. But to be fair, the rain was some torrential downpour in Utah yesterday, with massive crosswinds, and rain so hard you could barely see the road, so I’m not sure any tire would have performed perfectly in those conditions, but certainly better than these.

    Have since taken in for *another* rebalance and the shake is worse. Have asked for a replacement set (called corporate) and have an appointment to tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

    For the data geeks (I'm one for a living) here's some red meat. Notice how every time they're balanced they come up with a different weight (shown in ounces).
