Best All Terrain Tires?

I foolishly left out the Cooper Discoverer options in my recommendation

I did a year's worth of searching reviews and got real world data to back up what i had been reading by snow plow and construction workers who use this tire. The Good Year Duratracs are by far the best all around tire, great on wet roads and awesome in the snow and a good highway ride, great off road dirt/mud too. However they will get noisy over time which will be the trade off, but that's the case with manny AT tires.

That said, i have been super happy with them across the board. But with around 40k on them they are very noisy now and i'll probably replace them before the winter. My only other tire that i may try would be the Baja Boss A/T but they are super new and very little real world info at higher mileage. They do have a similar tread pattern as the Duratracs so i would expect them to be good, but it's going to be a tough decision to switch if i do.

 

Me too!!!!!!!!!! Good all-round! We've driven from WA St to SoCal in windy, dusty conditions (South from Bridgeport, CA then to Flag, to Vegas and reservation roads all around Gallup & Chaco Canyon Nat. Mon., N.M.) and blizzards with whiteout (From Bend, OR to Bridgeport, CA).

Remember, there will NOT be a "best" all terrain tire. Sandy and muddy conditions require different tires from rocky conditions. Ranchers that I know use thin, aggressive tires to cut through "gumbo" on muddy roads: wide tires are better for sand like at Glamis. The Wranglers handle snow here in NC WA ST, rocky Forest Service roads; the ones I had on my pre-Taco handles rock-crawling in streams on deer & elk hunts In Utah, Wyoming, and muddy "tank tracks" @ Ft Hunter Ligget in Cali. while hunting quail and wild pigs. Once we put it in 4WD near Newport, OR and stayed in 4WD until Salt Lake City! The even handled my wife learning that, using 4WD, it works better with ALL FOUR tires on the ground! (She missed a turn in a blizzard in Rawlins, WY.

From your location (Ohio), I would put more emphasis on handling wintry road conditions

 

Imagine paying 60k+ and getting cheap Chinese tires. That dealer ought to be embarrassed.

 

A friend of mine recently replaced her 2012 with a 2024 that came with the Grandtreks. She texted me the other day and asked me about them, she said "I don't know if it's just me, but these tires on here seem really bad in the wet compared to my old one. Am I crazy for wanting to replace them before winter?". I said nope, the general consensus is that these tires are garbage.

She had some sort of Goodyear on her 2012 that her local shop had recommended. I told her to just make sure what ever she gets is 3peak rated.

Mine came with the Dueler HTs, they were okay in rain but meh in snow.

 

ANY tire you choose will be better than the OEM Grandtreks or Bridgestone Duelers. I lasted 2 years with the factory tires before switching them. I live in a snowy climate and could not get enough traction Shame on Toyota for putting such crap tires on the 4 runner.

 

X2 on these. I run the SL in stock size and they've been fantastic. Going on 65k miles with only a few rotations and they have a lot of useable tread left, they're nowhere near the wear bars.

They're great in all weather conditions, I was especially impressed with them in winter conditions . I REALLY wish they came in 255/80/17.

 

Have you tried the newest version, the Duratrac RT ? From the pics it looks like it has a lot more siping .

 

Toyo AT3 are highly touted, I don’t think the Pirelli Scorpion AT is given enough love, they’re light, quiet and 3-peak snow rated.

 

I saw those. They look like a good option with improved design. But they are new and little info similar to BaJa.

Lol! Maybe they were specially designed for weaving in and out of traffic at 90 MPH.

They are nice looking
They get real loud as they start to wear out
They do not last anywhere near what you would consider a "long life" tire would last. You are going to get about 50,000 on them at best, maybe 55,000 if you drive good and rotate.

welcome! I can only recommend Falken WP AT3 or 4. I cannot say anything negative about them. Had them for years on my 2007, still use them on my 2011 and my 2022 has them. Great offroad and in any on road condition. Theyre quiet on the hwy, balance easy and have great tread life when you rotate every 3-5k miles. I do 90% highway and can get 50-55k on a set before theyre ready for a new set.

 

i dumped them 100 miles after i took possession of my 2022 TSE. I nickname them “Dudlops”.

I ran the Falken WP's on my 2016 Jeep Cherokee and found they didn't perform very well in mud or muddy wet grass on a gentle incline, even in 4WD. I no longer have it, but I remember they were pretty quite on the road/hwy, and did perform somewhat decently in snow (at least on-road and on flat surfaces). I was going to replace the stock 4Runner tires with them until I remembered the mud issue we had. I'm not bagging on the Falkens at all. I think they're a great tire, I'm just in need for a more well-rounded performance from an A/T tire since I live in the high desert where we see the full gamut of weather conditions.

I I have a 2018 TRD Off Road / Barcelona Red also. I went with Mickey Thompson Baja 285/70/17 with RRW rims. For looks only and run only in summer in upstate NY

 

interesting to hear of your difficulties with them.
ive had no issues in mud, wet grass or snow (10+ in pic below w/slight incline in my front yard).

Originally KO2's were the plan until I discovered that they were discontinued and my local tire shop doesn't have any in stock. The KO3's don't seem to be as sturdy according to the research I've done. So I'm going back and forth between Toyo Open Country R/T Trail and Nitto Ridge Grappler

 

Those Toyo AT and Nitto Grappler are good choices. I usually try stick to milder trails but in Northern NV most have lotsof rocks. If my Cooper ATs ever puncture I’ll replace them with one of those two. Most around here like E rated KO2 for less chance of puncture.

 

I think I bought my ko2s in October last year. When did they discontinue it?

 

It possible that Discount Tire just stopped carrying them. That's where I was shopping for them online. Could just be the size I was looking at...?
