Anyone go from a Taco to 4R? Thoughts?

Thanks. Minivan ran a yield sign in Anza and sideswiped my wife and I. We are mostly OK. Thanks be to Toyota safety. BTW, consider rock rails for this reason, not just rocks. Loved that truck! Need to move on now. Once I get the insurance money, I will be in a 5th Gen 4Runner (I can't get excited about a turbocharged moped engine).

 

agree with you 100%. I bought a new 2023 ORP last year for the exact reasons you mentioned! Had a TRD TACO bought new in 2009and that was the best pickup truck I ever owned. I thought about getting another one last year but I fish a lot and it’s nice to have all your gear under one roof.

2 is 1 and 1 is none. That's the best kind of hoarder's logic (to which I also subscribe).

The only thing that I regret not having an option on the 4R is the 6 speed manual. that would have been the bees knees.

 

Picked up my 2024 ORP last week. Traded my 2021 Tacoma OR DCSB. Loved the truck around town but extended road trips were uncomfortable after a couple of hours. Also, at this life stage I’m hauling more ass than cargo. Only feature I miss so far…Auto Headlights. Love everything else about the 4R! This is the vehicle I will own forever!

 

Sold my Taco for the 4R. I'm happy with the change.

 

Sold my 19 OR last year and bought a 23 ORP. No reason, just needed a change and I sold the Taco for roughly the same price I paid in 2019.

 

I went from a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 6MT to a 2022 4Runner TRD Off-Road. I did really like the Tacoma overall, but the access cab didn't give my dog much room and I was getting tired of just having the bed for stuff, even with the hardcover. Also, when towing my enclosed trailer with 2 motorcycles and gear to track days, or our 18ft bowrider boat, I was left pretty unimpressed with the Tacoma's towing ability.
Early in 2022 while at the dealership for a service, I saw the 4Runner TRD Off Road there, and the salesperson who sold me my Tacoma asked if I wanted to try it out. Whoever ordered it had bailed out on the purchase apparently, and the dealership gave me way more than I expected for my Tacoma, so I went for it. No regrets at all, the 4Runner can tow much better, is much quieter and nicer to drive, can carry lots of cargo inside, and my dog is much happier!

 

I decided on having both because I make poor financial decisions.

 

Another one here. I had a 2014 2nd gen TRD Offroad DCSB for 9 years and traded it in on my 2023 Pro.





I still miss the Taco at times. I used it a lot for "truck" duties that I cant do as easily with the T4R: Hauling mulch, firewood, brush. Going to the town parade and putting a couple lawn chairs in the bed to watch the kids march by. Moving large furniture or picking up new appliances. Filling the bed with gear for boy scout campouts. Throwing 3-4 bikes in the bed without needing to mount a rack. Going Christmas tree shopping and just tossing it in the back, etc.

But in almost every other way the 4R is an upgrade. Its by far a better ride for DD/commuting (in spite of having the same trans and essentially same engine). It has so many creature comforts . The radio and dash only feel like they come from the 2000s, not the 80s The built quality is better - not that the Taco was bad I never had any reliability problems but it always had a stubborn dash rattle and that 40mph driveshaft vibration they never could solve. Its much easier to park. I get a foot of space back in my garage. It is a better offroad platform due to shorter wheelbase, tighter turn circle, better angles, etc. And the T4R just has a cool factor that's hard to describe - the whole fam just loves it in a way they never did the Taco.

I would have kept both but the dealer offered me 70% of what I paid new and I just don't have the space/budget to maintain both. At some point I may want to get a truck again but for real truck duty an access cab long bed with a bigger tow rating is more useful.

 

You've made a bunch of good points, and they echo many of my own thoughts. I really liked my 2018 Tacoma TRD and added an ARE cap to keep my equip dry. But with the cap, I lost a couple of those capabilities. But, I have an Aluma trailer with bi-fold tailgate and moto wheel chocks for hauling dual sports, mulch, large appliances (rarely, but when I do the lift over height of the trailer is convenient), moving garden tractor, ATV, snow blower, small fleet of kayaks, . . .





Of course, you have to know you are going to need it before leaving home.
