Sadly, I didn't grow up on any type of Tequila or Mezcal. I did a few shots of cheap Tequila when I was young, and thought I hated it for years.

 

As i have been experiencing, there are some very good cheaper Tequilas out there. I went through the same process when I was younger, and just doing shooters until you pass out. Now that i am officially an old fart i am a sipper, i can actually taste it this way.

 

Yeah, I haven't been big on doing shots for a long time. But, I'll still do them occasionally, if that's the kind of night it is.

Cheers! I'm having a little bit of Severo Cristalino. I'm not really sure how much I like it yet, but it seems to go nicely with a cigar.

 

Ironically, Gusano Rojo became my standard because it was so cheap. We'd buy it in Ensenada for $3.50 per liter, less if you brought in your own kerosene can (How the locals bought it!) - we could only bring one liter back across the border. Drink one (between us) on the beach and bring one home!

I finally broke off the tab on a bottle of Buffalo Trace I have had for a couple of months. Intention was to take it camping, that plan changed. Buffalo Trace is actually very tasty and has a nice aroma. I'll tell you if
there are any lingering effects tomorrow!

 

Monday was our most recent Colorado Agave Collective event.

We each picked our personal favorite non-limited release agave spirit to enter into this month’s blind tasting.



As always, Tequila Ocho Plata San Jeronimo was the baseline control that we used to warm up our palates.

Pour 1 - Morgan’s Pick:
Santanera Kosher Blanco - Santanera’s unrivaled commitment to quality, sustainability, transparency and attention to detail sets a new standard for tequila production. Coming out of NOM 1123, this Sergio Cruz-distilled (yes you read that right!) bottle is a masterpiece in elegance and precision. Santanera is the best kept secret in tequila.

Pour 2 - Ryan’s Pick:
Siembra Valles High Proof Tahona Blanco - Single estate lowlands agave, brick oven cooked, Tahona ground, open-air fermented in cement tanks with agave fibers and native yeast, double distilled, rested in glass demijohns, and then bottled undiluted. Created at the hand of Chavo Rosales at NOM 1123, the flavors are cranked up and the character is undeniable.

Pour 3 - Nathan’s Pick:
La Venenosa Raicilla Costa - Wild agave, cooked in small ovens, open air fermentation, and distilled in hand carved tree trunk stills make this agave distillate from Jalisco a funky, less smoky alternative to the mezcals of Oaxaca.

Pour 4 - Spencer’s Pick:
Flor del Desierto Cascabel - A Sotol pechuga, not technically an agave plant the Sotol grows for 18-22 years before harvesting for this bottle, which then is triple distilled in copper, during the third a rattlesnake is hung in the still to make it a pechuga with balanced femininity and gamey profile.

Not much of a Tequila person here But I have a choice of some Kentucky Bourbon to work on The Elijah Craig is rather good and the 1792 is Ok Also any Cigar Smokers here? had a Bello Cigar gave to me and I'm not really a smoker.

 

I just started smoking more cigars. I would ordinarily buy cheap ones every once in awhile, but recently decided to buy some nicer ones on a whim. After trying some better ones, I went a little nutso...

The humidor box was only around $32 on Amazon, and came with a cutter and a lighter. I'm using Boveda packets to maintain the humidity level.

I don't know anything about Bello cigars. I really don't know anything about any cigars, to be honest. So far, Padron and Oliva have been my favorites. The ones that don't come with wrappers have generally been better than those with wrappers. I doubt there's anything scientific about that, though.

 

I went to the Bello Website and found the one that I have at $250 for a box of 20 I don't know if that is cheap or pricey for something to burn.

 

That seems to be in the average range from what I've seen so far. The ones I've really been liking have been around $12-15 apiece, so far. Sometimes there's a price break on a full box, so those would probably be in the same range.

You can get cigars cheaper than that. And, you can definitely spend much more. But, it seems like the $10-15 range is kind of the sweet spot. As long as you're not smoking them every day, that's not bad, IMO.

 

I was up goofing around in the woods all weekend, getting dirty and leaving skid plat kisses on the rocks. In the evenings, I took on bartender duty, as usual.
