Annoying Pro Exhaust Noise

No, the genesis was about four dozen Pro exhaust vs stock exhaust threads ago.

 

I guess I've been living under a rock...I didn't even know the Pro came with a different exhaust system.

 

This thread is beefing up my ignore list...

 

Truly. I get banned for a month because I said politicians waste money yet butt hurtness over exhaust notes and drain plug torque go on for pages.

 

The '23 4Runner I purchased yesterday had dealer installed TRP Pro bits to include the exhaust. It did seem to improve performance a tiny itty bit (compared to my SR5 Premium rental), but it is so loud on start up and for at least 5 minutes it's impossible to have a conversation. but what's weird to me, it's not at all loud on the outside. I wondered whether there is a hole? Wouldn't that contribute to a louder interior and quiet exterior sound?

As much as I don’t want a loud exhaust on my 4Runner, you are being a bit of a prick about it.

I did not remove the TRD exhaust, and actually love the tone when outside the truck. Was hoping for ideas about whether it is supposed to be so loud and why it is SO MUCH LOUDER in the cabin than outside the truck. it's only the first 5 minutes and it does get somewhat quieter on highways, but more constructively, is there anyway to insulate it under the truck so it's not so loud? my dogs will be utterly terrified by the decibels.

No hole. I cut mine off and replaced with stock. Best modification I made. Pro exhaust is in my basement collecting dust.

 

Oh that was me from two years ago. I'm better now.

 

The sound deadening works very good however be prepared it is a lot of work and time 2 years ago I ended up helping a co-worker with his 4Runner because he got started he went full on pulled everything from the interior out then realize just how much time the entire project was going to take.

 

Weirdly, maybe b/c it was snowy and icy here so we were in H4, the exhaust did not bother me not one little bit. Even kind of dug it. One dog christened the all weather floor mat, but the other didn't seem too anxious by the noise. I let the Runner warm up a lot though, so maybe that's the secret.

 

If anyone wants to trade/sell their Pro exhaust, I'm your guy located in the Northern Colorado area.

 

Another way to deal with the TRD Pro Exhaust.... There is a set of Little Control buttons on the Left side of the Steering wheel! Just put your fav Tunes on and Push the right pointing one until you no longer hear the Exhaust and the left one when you want to hear it again!

 

I've got a cat-back exhaust I'd like to trade for a 'normal' one.

I live in the Baltimore area.

 

My 2015 inferno didnt come with the Pro Exhaust

 

I just keep the engine RPMs below 2000 and alls good. No drone.

 

Probably in the minority but I really like it, adds character to the truck. If I wanted something quiet and refined, I would have opted for a GX460.

Totally understand why others might get annoyed with it though. I have a threshold too and don’t like exhausts that are obnoxiously droney. Everyone’s tolerance is different.

 

I've been back and forth.
It really doesnt bother me when I commute on the freeway where it's flat or when I run errands in the city.
I like hearing it when I start the 4R. If anything I like that it sounds like a truck. I also like hearing it in mud or dirt going fast and hitting the rev limiter.

What I don't like is when going up mountain roads at 75 mph, mainly when it downshifts to 3rd gear on a steep climb or on long distance roadtrip. In these instances, I wish it was quiet.

If there was a button to choose between quiet or loud like some sports cars have to open or close the valve it would be perfect.

 

Any SoCal dudes looking to get out of a Pro Exhaust, I'll trade my OEM one. Only 10k miles on it.

its a terrible sounding motor magnified by an even worse sounding exhaust and the drone is as bad as ive ever heard - i took it to a local shop and had it cut off and welded on a stock type muffler - very happy - cost me $300 to remove an $1100 option...

 

So far I'm not in luck to make it quiet while keeping the side exhaust.

1) Toyota specialized shop 1 denied to change the exhaust that did not come from factory. They only replace original parts.
2) Y'day I went to another exhaust shop and they said I have to change the entire cat back. They didn't like to cut and weld to keep the side exhaust.

I haven't had a chance to discuss with Mrs for next steps. Most likely if I can't get the TRD Pro quiet we would have to take the Limited for our trips. Right now only TRD Pro is setup for trips with dog barrier, extra fan for the dog, crossbars for the roof box, gmrs radio to talk with rest of the group, and many more..

 

i would check around with other exhaust shops - sounds like they are just trying to sell parts - it took about 15 minutes - any good exhaust shop should be able to cut and weld...otherwise what would we need them for? Probably for less than what i paid. I actually went in twice - the first time they sold me a performance muffler that they said was quieter and really all it did was change the tone slightly. I went back in and they cut it out and welded in the stock type and didn't charge me, im sure the second muffler was probably cheaper.

 

i kept the side exit - it looks better IMO

 

man that BS they wouldnt do it. I a did cut and had a local (not chain shop) weld it together for $50. Kept side pipe and all.

 

I think you need to find a muffler shop that knows what they are doing, and it willing to work...

Toyota wanted ~$900 to replace muffler on my 3rd gen, went to a local father and son owned muffler shop and got it installed $80
that same shop has made custom exhausts for my old cars, I watched them bend and weld the entire exhaust and hang it...

Your project can be done, if you find the right shop...

Take your TRD exhaust off and sell it here on marketplace and you may get your cost of the new exhaust back
