Late to the party and I'm guessing I missed the boat too... Looking at the forms, I see everything is sold out. Will future batches be made for the AMD? I see for the AMD the wish list was through tomorrow. Will keep the form bookmarked and hopeful. Thanks!

Does anyone knows if the harness can operate with an aftermarket radio headunit?

Yes it does. It plugs into the cluster.

The cluster but not the OEM radio, right? I have a Pioneer headunit and won't compromise for this AMD harness.

Yes into the cluster. My concern was not having a working compass since the OEM antenna is used for GPS but Old Red said the display has its own compass.

This is correct. You will have to calibrate it yourself but he has the info on how to do it. It's a pretty easy job honestly.

according to the instructions, the pro with JBL system has an extra step during install.
It needs to de-pin and move a terminal and install another wire. Is that complicated or fairly easy for someone who's never done it before?

Not having any install video is unfortunate.
Especially having to remove the instrument cluster and challenges with compass and JBL systems. Doesn't sound like a simple install.

His instructions are very detailed and do make it very easy. I am not a wizard when it comes to this stuff and wiring absolutely terrifies me. Just take it slow and double check everything that you are doing and it was easy as hell

One thing I REALLY HOPE for the instructions to have pictures as a lot of us are visual learners vs reading. Reading can be misleading in a lot of ways and don't want to make any errors specially dealing with electrical stuff. I've had plenty of issues with DIY by just reading instructions due to steps being forgotten by the vendor, including big manufacturer. Im not doubting OldRed by any means and this harness seems to be very easy in comparison to other projects I have done, im just talking in general.

Every PDF I make, regardless of what harness it is walks you through step by step with clear labeled pictures. I'm a visual learner myself. I need to see a diagram or picture showing how to do something, so that I completely get. There's a difference in the level of detail a small hobbyist like me can provide vs a giant manufacturer who says "good enough" on their generic instructions. If you have questions feel free to PM me privately.

I think you need to reread some posts here.
The AMD has no connection to the OEM or an aftermarket radio system, so whatever you have sound system wise won't impact the AMD & vice versus. Hope that helps.

Not that I know of besides his harness request page. He will sometimes post here but has been burned by T4R forum so he tends to just stick to IG.

The request page is a temporary stop gap while I work on editing the website. I'm hoping to have that up sometime in July. It's slow going though as I am learning how to do all that as I go.

Yep, I don't post projects on the forums anymore. The T4R forum debacle and subsequent issue were the last straw. I do try and chime in when I can and help folks running into electrical issues when I see threads but for the most part I'm more of a passive reader now a days.

Sir, with all due respect I could not find install instructions.

If I was local to you I would have spend my time to record videos and edit them and post absolutely free of charge and knowing it will not work for my 4Runners with JBL just for 4Runner members. I do not need a single cent of your sales nor need any free products. Just would do it as a help for other members just like my other video and happy if it help your business to boost.

I hope the tone of my last response was not misconstrued (part of the reason I hate texting, so much nuance gets lost). If it was I do apologize. See Post #103. There's a reason I have not done an install video in part due to issues securing it from third parties. PDFs are much easier. Part of the reason why install instructions are not available or easy to find is because I secure them now because of issues I ran into a few years ago that once again has come up to be a problem. I use to put up stuff for free viewing on the other 4Runner site, and ended up having an issue with a certain party thinking it was free IP for them to copy, hence why you don't see my stuff posted anymore on a forum.

The AMD does work for all 4Runners equipped with Crawl Control, with or without JBL. Trying to clear up some confusion (part of the reason I am working on a website to host all this stuff.)

Again, sorry if my last response was misconstrued. Trying to type responses quickly on my end doesn't always come across as one wishes.

@Old Red - Quick question, I noticed that your AMD harness has two exposed wires. Those are the ones that are supposed to be tapped to the cluster harness? Please correct me if I'm wrong but thats the vibe I get from other members providing some input etc.

The two wires don't go to the instrument cluster. Those go to the junction connector behind the instrument cluster. All you need to do is insert the two wires into the corresponding locations I outline in the instructions, and then plug everything else in. Shoot me a PM if you need help with the install.

Howdy all! So I traded my 12 Ram for my 21 4R Venture last fall and the hunt for mods began with gusto! In one of the forums I came across this piece of gold from Old Red but couldn't locate an available harness and so the project was added to my ultimate/unobtainable wish list to research again at a later date and the project was forgotten as others took its place. Jump to three weeks ago.. I'm randomly searching FB Marketplace and happened to stumble upon someone selling one of Old Red's AMD harnesses!! o_O I immediately loaded all of my bookmarks about this mod (including this thread) to verify that I had actually found what I thought I had. And it was!! Bought it immediately and now have it in hand! Got in contact with Old Red and he sent me the PDF instructions (totally blown away by the attention to detail and the perfect pictures - best write up I've ever seen, hands down!).

After reviewing the instructions (just to see how far down the rabbit hole this will take me LoL!) I began the ultimate hunt for the AMD with the ever elusive Blue display. It quickly became apparent that eBay was not going to be my source and I reluctantly turned to the dealer sites. On the Toyota Parts Center Online site, I realized that the price for the AMD fluctuated drastically depending on the dealer page I was on (this is due to some dealers offering a deeper discount while others charge full MSRP). So, I hunted the entire US of A, inputting various zip codes and loading the AMD product page on every dealer's sub-site. I *finally* found the best price for me and my location.. Lewis Toyota of Topeka. Their price for the AMD (blue) is $402.97 -- while this is not the lowest price I found, like I said it was the best deal for my location. After entering my Wyoming zip code, my cart dropped as the sales tax was removed. It took a few days to talk myself into this but considering I'm not into a lot of the popular higher dollar mods others like to buy, I decided that this is something I am happy (and entirely too excited about LoL!) to spend my money on. So I pulled the trigger and I spent exactly $402.97.. Toyota has an active free shipping offer that applies to orders of $75 or more so I was charged nothing for the sales tax and got free shipping.

Moral of the story is.. while researching this mod I've read plenty of posts and threads regarding the extremely limited availability of used AMD units and the high price of a new unit from the dealers. After my own lengthy hunt I can say that the odds of finding a used unit are practically non-existent at this point, but major kudos if you do! If this mod is as high on your list of priorities (as it was mine) you can buy a new unit from a dealer. Yes, they are more pricey than used.. but, if you put in the research (and all the zip codes LoL!) you can find the best price/deal for you and your location!

I have no idea when mine will arrive, but my order is confirmed so I guess I'll continue reviewing Old Red's PDF file to make sure I'm ready to jump in when it does finally arrive!

I installed mine a couple weeks ago. I love it. I can't believe Toyota replaced it by a small clock. It should have stayed on the 4R forever in my opinion.

Big thanks to Old Red for making the harness allowing us to do this mod. Yes, his PDF instructions is very detailed and very clear. What would have been something difficult to do is actually very easy thanks to his attention to details. Also, he is very kind and always helpful if questions arise.

I'm so used to seeing the temperature right next to the time on my Outback. It's not so easy to pick out on the busy 4R info screen. I've been thinking about digging into reformatting the head unit home screen. When I do that I hope to find a way to make the temp stick out more.
