6th gen Speculation Thread

I think public transit in the US is more difficult due to population spread. Not that things couldn't be improved in higher population areas but California tried the high speed train like Europe and Japan and that didn't seem to turn out well.

That may work in the NE where population density is higher but I haven't seen any plans for that

 

No arguments against human industrial activity having led to environmental consequences. Plenty of examples of water that catches fire, water tables contaminated due to mining activities, and smog air pollution in heavily traveled cities before regulations were put in place to mitigate those issues. These would be examples of more localized pollution (think of it as weather) rather than global repercussions (think of it as not just localized climates but the climate of the entire Earth).

I'm not against EVs, I appreciate all leaps in human technology. I just don't like being treated as a conspiracy theorist because I don't agree we have enough accurate long term data to support claims they are the solution (or will even be a contributing factor) in changing the trends we are currently seeing

 

I said on here one time that man-made global warming isn't provable, and got all kinds of crap for it. But that statement is true. People just get emotional about it.

 

I would love a 4Runner PRIME. i would LOVE it.

 

Yeah, anyone trying to say that we aren't harming the environment is full of it. But, EV's in their current form aren't the solution either. Unfortunately, it seems like most people don't see the middle ground.

 

I wouldn't mind either. In fact, since the new land cruiser (really a prado) should be coming back to the US as a hybrid, I'm probably going to try to talk the wife into trading in the JGC for one.

Wouldn't mind having a 6th gen hybrid either. A hybrid would suit our family well. Actually, a small full on EV would be a great 3rd vehicle for us but I can't justify the expense. If the 6th gen is a hybrid at a lower cost than land cruiser maybe I could talk her into that. She hates driving the 5th gen though, mostly due to the way it brakes

 

Anyone know the percentage of electric vehicles currently on the road that are being powered strictly by coal/natural gas? Or an approximation?

Not my wheelhouse, but it’s gotta be a huge majority, no?

 

It varies by region. There is a map somewhere, maybe EPA has it. Additionally, there is analysis done comparing ICE emissions to true emissions from EVs by state.

Like most things, it's not as bad as you suppose, but it's also worse than EV fans would have you believe.

If I remember correctly, natural gas and oil power was better than gasoline cars, but coal is worse. Midwest had a lot of coal. Solar, wind, and nuclear power are obviously miles ahead of gasoline, where available.

Even on the fossil fuels, power plants are generally more efficient than ICE. But you're right, emissions are emissions.

If you select an electric vehicle and go to the Energy tab, and show tailpipe + upstream GHG, they have a link to calculate electricity emissions based on your location.

Total emissions (in grams / mile) are as follows:
4Runner: 630
Rivian suv: 210 (national average, so give or take)
Rav4 hybrid: 268
Grand Highlander turbo hybrid: 398 (probably close to LC250 numbers)
Prius: 199

So you can see the EV is still better than a comparable ICE, but obviously the more efficient vehicles have less overall emissions. A Chevy Bolt would be even lower than the Rivian, but they're not really competitors.

I would be more excited if I hadn't bought the 2019 and then transformed it into my SHTF/zombie apocalypse vehicle

It could potentially outlive me but hopefully not. I still plan to keep it until the wheels fall off so I probably won't be in the market for the 6th gen but still interested in what they come up with.

If I were still stock I'd consider trading up if they nail it

 

Land Cruiser starting at $55k makes me think a $51k 4runner would be a tough sell.

 

I assume the SR5 will probably start at $39k and the Pro will top off at $57k???

 

SR5 is already over $40k, it's hard to imagine any automaker pricing the new model lower than the outgoing, especially these days.

The Taco jumped $3-5k, depending on the trim level.

 

It all depends on what the 6th gen is. Is it going to have a stupid “floating roof”? Black cladding everywhere? And a turbo 4 cylinder? If so, not excited about it at all.

Or is it going to be made out of metal like current one and have a V6? Then I’m in. Not to replace my 5th gen, I’ll keep that forever. But it would make me excited about the 6th gen.

Then there’s pricing. Starting prices in the high 40s and 50s isn’t a good sign.

I wouldn't say that stopping to charge every few hours is "fine." The fact is that you can't travel in an EV as you would in an ICE. If that's OK for some people, then good for them. I'll stick to traveling in an ICE until improvements are made.

But, I totally agree. Not one person's political beliefs have ever been swayed by an internet forum.

 

The champ of all around vehicle in our household is an older Camry. 33 mpg on the highway at 70mph and 22 or so in the city, with an 18.5 gallon tank, I don't have to refuel for weeks at a time. Right now anyone can pick one up for 5k with very low miles.

I am a firm believer that we had it GOOD in the early 2000s with good mpg, simple hardware design, and only enough integrated circuits for the critical functions like ECM, TCM, ABS, etc.

I am not saying the newer safety and convenience features aren't nice, but when I drive our camry or my 05 corolla, I simple don't find myself wanting more "features" to go places. Navigation? I have a phone and a 12v charger. Music? a 20 dollar FM adapter. Sometimes a vehicle is just that, a vehicle, not my living room, not my office, not my man cave. A damn mode of conveyance.

That being said, I still like my 5th gen 4R

 

Agreed! Plus, even if I were in a position to get a second vehicle, I'd probably buy another ICE vehicle. I just can't imagine spending $40K on something I couldn't travel in. Maybe as a 3rd car.

I'd love a Rav4 prime as a second vehicle. But, not for $10K more than the 4Runner was.

A plug in hybrid Corolla hatchback would be very appealing to me as well. Maybe that's just a Prius, though.
