Yes, but I'm not so sure that's the main reason for them doing it with their body on frame vehicles. If it was, they'd offer the most popular selling trims (the lower trims) in a hybrid.

Toyota is fine when it comes to CAFE standards since its measured by the entire fleet of vehicles they sell. The Prius alone probably offsets enough emissions for their entire fleet.

The I-Force Max is mainly for hp/torque gains.

Five lug wheels, not a 4Runner. Every generation of Toyota 4Runner comes with a 6x139. 7 bolt pattern.

they're been watching everyone spend a shit ton on these vehicles in aftermarket parts. They want in. I would argue it's really good because it allows people to get these parts installed (if they don't have the skills to do it) at a better labor price than it would be to put these parts on at a shop, and get it financed at a better rate than putting it on a credit card. Pretty smart. Great way to capture more revenue.

 

Oh I 100% get it, and agree. The names just sound lame to me, like their part of a super long Amazon Item description. "Off Road SUV truck 4X4 Overtrail Sports SUV for sport and off-road over trail" LOL

Its actually saved me from buying another roof rack for the time being. I had a prinsu on my Taco that while used a little, "looking cool" was the main draw. Now I see these Kias and Honda Elements with a 3ft long basket lashed to the roof and think who am I kidding. Even if I camp I'm not going on a 4-week boondock. I live in NE and I'm gonna get drunk on the state's grass somewhere instead of my own.

 

I can't imagine driving any EV on a long road trip.

it’s really not bad here in northeast. You got a kid and they need breaks anyways, might as well combine with a charging break. Plus way too many Tesla chargers available, I don’t ever feel range anxiety.

 

I'm with Thatbassguy. I want to drive, stop to refuel and pee, and drive again. Not interested in 'hanging out' several times along the way at the recharge stops.

Big fan of Aging Wheels and the potential represented by EVs. I think it's a great second car option (or primary since you're trading all those gas station trips for more/longer stops long-distance) and the flexibility a battery offers to power things (if supported) and also be charged by different fuels in a pinch.

Other than the home-charging thing (my apartment complex's Blink network (Level 2) chargers cost jumped from the admittedly crazy low price of $0.03/kWh to $0.39-0.49/kWh whereas I pay ~$0.13/kWh to the utility.) what'll probably be my biggest hurdles would be:

• Spare tire (It's not an EV issue but skipping it is popular in them)
  
• Tech/Software (Also not an EV issue inherently but automakers really like shoving in software that they mess up. See: Ford's Mach-E OTA update failing meaning the car can't be driven and the Colorado's update failing and draining the 12V. Not to mention getting rid of the physical light switch in favor of an infotainment button and claiming it's "bug-free"...)
• Payments (I don't want to download four apps and be a member of three different networks for a discount, I just want to give it my credit card)
• Uptime (A fast charger technically working doesn't help me get going if it only charges at 5 kW.)

Tesla opening up their network will be interesting but we will see if they can maintain it's performance.

I'd like to see much more hybridization out there at lower price points, that'll probably do the most overall good than trying to leapfrog straight to EV although I recognize it has been cool to see. But also not cool to see them lean too far (IMO) into high-priced electrified models. (Pepperidge farm remembers when the Lighting and Maverick supposedly started at 40k and 20k respectively...)

 

Certainly not me! But a couple/family may have two vehicles especially with homeowners gaining the most benefit from electrifying. My parents have a RAV4 and Sonata, a cheaper used Bolt would fit in their use case if they so desired. (but not that they care to bother in this market/economy but I digress)

 

lol as someone who has done 14 hours in one day I’ll never do more than 5-6 hours before stopping again. most EVs with a battery over 100kW are in the 3-4 hour range. Anyone with kids or even just a partner isn’t going that long without stopping. The charging network isn’t what it needs to be yet, but with every major manufacturer adopting NACS as their port for 2025+ charging in the US will look a whole lot different than before.

 

^^^ I’m not an EV shill but unless you’re in the desert (even there gas stations are few and far in-between) charging isn’t what people think it is. My choice for my next car is down to the 6th Gen or a Rivian R1S.

exactly. people that will benefit from EVs the most are those that NEVER and mostly drive around their city or families that go on roadtrips that have to/would opt to stop for long periods anyway.

 

No matter what happens, the planet will be just fine. Now for the rest of us poor souls reading about adding another Category to the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale, maybe not as fun!

Off-road trips won't work, but road trips are fine. Guys in my off-road club have done week-long road trips in a Tesla Model S. Very comfortable and relaxing thanks to Autopilot. Range was never an issue thanks to Tesla's charging network.

 

My kid is grown up. I almost never stop unless I need fuel.

It's not range anxiety. It's just me wanting to reach my destination in a reasonable time.

Agreed! But, I have found that a sit down meal after 10-12 hours is extremely helpful with fatigue.

It's roughly 1400 miles to my Mom's house in Florida. I've done 20+ hours in a day numerous times. I stop for 10 minutes every 275-300 miles, and I do like to get out of the car for a solid hour after 10-12 hours. Sometimes I stop to sleep at a rest area, sometimes I don't.

 

I think those of us who are averse to owning and relying on an EV aren’t saying it can’t be done. Rather, we’re saying we don’t prefer it that way. The questions of comfort or range anxiety don’t matter to me. That’s all. I’m not asking you to convince me of anything.

 

This is how I feel. If I don't have to worry about actually finding a charger, if it takes me 20 minutes or half an hour to charge up, I'm fine with that. By the time I get out, grab a snack, running and use the restroom, take my dog for a walk, it's half hour easy. Not the end of the world.

What would worriy me now is that the chargers aren't standardized and I'm hearing a lot of times people get to them and their broke or otherwise non-functional, which is not indicated on the locator app. I'm sure it'll just take time though, I imagine in 1924 you would have had a difficult time finding gasoline in some areas.

Edit: it just occurred to me, I live in Rhode Island where they can't figure out how to build roads and bridges correctly, it'll be a long time before we have robust EV infrastructure here.

 

20 min to a half hour to charge up wouldn't be bad. On road trips with the family we usually stop at fast food but go in to eat. That would be more than enough time for a break and recharge.

If the interstate side fast food restaurants had chargers like this, it would save an additional stop for fuel at the gas station
