6th gen Speculation Thread

It’s probably an insanely difficult job to be a decision-maker on such large scale projects. You really have to know your customer base. Quality alone doesn’t sell like it once did. That’s how Toyota got to where they are but a lot of folks don’t consider that as important.

 

Looking at those gigantic wheel wells, I wondered if maybe they just built it with the aftermarket in mind. It's going to be interesting to see what the actual potential is for the 250. Like: what size tires will clear the body mounts? And, how much travel will the suspension allow?

It's a little frustrating, because my decision to go all in on my '19 is dependant on information we don't have yet.

 

Has anyone seen those new TRD seats in person?

Are they comfortable? Will they new 4Runner have them?

I'm interested in the new Tacoma TRD but I'm still eyeing the new 4Runner as well!

It will probably get the same wheelbase as the shortest Taco configuration, not the extended wheelbase one.

 

It is not going to have a 131" wheelbase!

Why do people keep assuming it will have the same wheelbase? They can make the frame any length they want. Just because they might share suspension and drive train parts doesn't mean they will have the same wheelbase.

If that's actually good information in post 1355, I'm sure it's meant to imply that the styling will be similar.

 

So in other words, another confirmation of what @Carmaker1 and I have been saying for sometime. Here was my last update, back on Jul 6, 2023.

However, we are now facing a new six month delay on the GX550 and LC250 launch, which will push out the launch of the 2025 6th gen 4Runner by the same amount of time, so taking into account this new delay, here is an update:

***When the next shoe drops, expect Toyota to start calling it the 2026 4Runner. Confirmation will be when we see a Toyota email with free 6th gen 4Runner foldup artwork, similar to the one Toyota sent out this week for the delayed 2024 Land Cruiser 250.

 

Thank you for the update. I have a deposit for a GX and I am aware of the delay. I have not heard that the LC250 is delayed as well. So realistically the 6gen 4Runner will be on dealer lots May / June 2025. I would be very very interested in a phev 4Runner. Will all power trains be released at launch ?

 

I think you misinterpreted my wording, the new 4Runner will not be on dealer lots May / June 2025. It will be revealed between Q2 - Q3 2024 and be available on dealer lots between Q4 2024 - Q2 2025. I changed my wording to be more clear, from "Launch" to "Available at Dealers".

I doubt all powertrains will be available at launch, using the GX550 as the example, the hybrid version will not be available until later in 2024 or early 2025 (best estimate).

 

Understand. I am just trying to set timid expectations for myself regarding figuring summer of 2025 for a specific trim I might happen to get on a list for. Also if they do offer a phev I would suspect it will be even further out. Thank you for the updates.

I probably shouldn't be worried about the 6th gen, either. I should be focused on making this one last 15 more years rather than spending money I don't have.

 

Agreed, Im more concerned what the 7th gen will look like!

 

At the rate we're going, the 7th gen will come out around 2049.

Yeah, we'll see if I can actually keep it in my pants once they're all available. Honestly, I'm really loving the new LC, and I'll be very tempted to get one in a few years, depending on how they do with the 6th gen.

I'm actually going to the Milwaukee auto show this winter for the first time in 20+ years to check out the GX and hopefully the LC.

The 4Runner discussion starts at the 54 min mark, no new information or specific dates, they mention the Baby FJ will be announced "soon" (remember, "soon" could be anytime in 2024).

David of Automotive Press is out with a new 4runner rendering and video, he mentions the new 4Runner is up to 1 year away, so my six month delay prediction may have been to conservative.

Gross. That rendering looks way too FJC-ish for me. Hopefully the final product will look better.

I didn't watch the video, but it makes more sense for them to share DNA with the Taco, rather than the LC/GX.

I'm also guessing it's just more speculation from industry "insiders", so I'll continue waiting for Toyota to release information before I get excited or disappointed.

 

The decision to get a 5th gen or wait for the 6th gen was easy for me: no 4.0 V6 in the 6th gen. Not a fan of a high-strung turbo 4 or 4-cylinder hybrid in a vehicle the size of a 4R. That was one of the reasons I choose an Explorer ST with the twin-turbo V6 instead of the 2.3L turbo 4. Could a turbo 4 power an Explorer? Yes. Would it better with a larger engine instead? Absolutely. If a V8 engine option was available in the Explorer, would I have chosen that instead? Probably. Minor styling changes I could get used to between the 5th gen and 6th gen 4R. But something as important as the powertrain is a pretty big change, and not for the better, IMHO. I had the pneumatic driver's seat in a Gen 1 Mitsubishi Montero way back when, it was actually very comfortable. You could adjust the "springiness" of the seat by turning a knob, kinda like on a shock absorber. Great feature on that boxy SUV.

 

My thoughts as well. Hard to say "absolutely no question" when everything is based on rumors and opinions.

I love how there's a huge market for speculation, though, with a new render every month.

If any of you are motorcycle guys too, this reminds me of the decade+ of speculation on the new Honda VFR back in the early 2000s. (Which there eventually was a new one, surprisingly). Although a refresh on a good-selling SUV is a lot more likely than a niche motorcycle.

 

Another thing...as long as the 6th gen is still made in the same plant in Japan, that will help ease some of the anxiety of potential buyers. Still being made in Japan was a big reason my daughter got her '23 4R TRD ORP, and I got my '23 4R Limited (that, and the 4.0 / 5-speed powertrain). Made in Japan Toyota quality is still top-notch, along with the tried and true engine / transmission combo. Toyota's set the bar pretty high for the 6th gen.

 

Zero interest in the 6th gen I think the new tundra and taco look fugly as sin and if the 4Runner looks like it basically it will be a baby sequoia, gross. If and when my 5th gen dies I’ll get a Lexus gx550 overtrail or Land Cruiser

Yeah but you can't order anything so you'll have to take dealer allotment which ironically is kind of how pimps operate also
