6th gen Speculation Thread

I’m thinking the same thing. This is the 6th gen, with a new (old) name

 

I agree. Not sure purpose of 4Runner, LC & GX.

is the LC much bigger inside and 3 row vs 2 row 4Runner maybe?

 

I'm not totally convinced.

I can see it happening.

But, I can also see them bringing back a slightly smaller, more utilitarian 4Runner.

We'll see...

 

It looks like a stretched and update FJ. If it starts in the mid 50's, then there is room for the 4Runner as long as it starts around 40k.

 

I said this in a previous post, but just maybe this frees up the next 4Runner to lean more aggressively into its off road side to compete more directly with the rubicon and the Bronco?

 

Seeing that the off-road specs don't appear to be all that impressive for the LC, this seems like a possibility to me as well.

 

Yeah, the $50k price point means there has to be a product to fill the $30-50k market.

So far, I’m unimpressed with the LC as an off-roader. Time will tell obviously.

That's how the 80 series seats folded, IIRC. I wonder if they are easily removed in order to clear the entire rear area for cargo?? Otherwise, I would agree that that actually kind of sucks.

Or, do the seat backs end up level with the rear cargo area when they are just folded down?

 

Watch this video, the seats either tumble forward, or just the seat backs fold down. Either way, you don’t have a flat cargo space, and the tumble forward takes up a lot of room.

He flips it forward so fast. You can't even tell if it actually is level with the cargo area or not.

Even if it isn't, though, it's nothing worse than what we already have with the 4Runner.

Also, maybe they are easy to remove so that folks can easily build themselves a platform.

 

6,000lb tow capacity for a new LC? Hmm maybe the new 4R will be able to tow 2,000lbs with 6HP Briggs and Stratton turbo

 

The 4Runner isn’t flat, but it’s also not wasting cargo space. For me, where I often camp in the back of my 4R, I’d probably have to remove the rear seats entirely.

Overall, not feeling any FoMo over this vehicle.

 

How is it wasting any more cargo space than our seat is? It looks like it's either flat and possibly slightly higher than the cargo area, like ours. Or, you can fold it forward and put stuff down on the floor. Either way, the seat has to go somewhere when you fold it.

I agree! I think I'm going to have to see it in person to really make my mind up.

But, after actually watching the video, I overall really like it. I didn't expect to, but I think it looks good. Maybe it won't be the Bronco/ rubicon Slayer that some had hoped, but I think it might still be pretty cool.

 

Honestly, I really like it too. If you told me this was the 6th gen 4R and started at $40k, I’d be pretty stoked. But definitely much less so at $55k, and left wondering how the 4R fits in. I guess we’ll have to just wait and see. It’s extremely unlikely I’ll ever own one of these LCs or GXs anyway haha.

 

I know I’m new around here, but I did have a thought. Given everything we are seeing on the new LC, I am thinking that the new 4Runner may be based on the new compact Toyota Stout pickup that has been speculated on.

Probably not, but the size & powertrain of this new LC don’t make any sense if the 6th gen 4Runner is going to stay thr same size as the 5th gen.

Hope I’m wrong and paranoid, but it makes me glad I am only 3-4 weeks out on my new 4R …

 

Agree. If I didn’t know I would’ve thought for sure it was the next Gen 4Runner. They seem almost same size. Would be weird I think to have 4Runner also in addition to this unless getting rid of the 4Runner or shrinking the 4Runner. Perhaps the 6th Gen will only be a 4Runner “sport”

The new "Land Cruiser" has 8.3 inches of ground clearance as per the video.

8.3 inches.

The current 4Runner has 9.6 inches of ground clearance in the 4x4 version (9.0 in 4x2).

What a tragic loss of ground clearance on a vehicle that has so far been marketed with "a renewed emphasis on off-road capabilities to fuel adventures."

For comparison, the Subaru Forester and Outback have 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

In order for buyers of the new "Land Cruiser" to equal the ground clearance of the current 4Runner they'll need to mount tires with a diameter of 2.6 inches greater than the stock tires on the "Land Cruiser" if my calculations are correct.

This seems like a step in the wrong direction for a vehicle that is currently being marketed for off-roading. If the new "Land Cruiser" is any indication of what the new 4Runner will be like (and it is), things are not looking good for those looking to buy a vehicle for serious off-road use.

 

Exactly my thought. I can not say anything about seats because my 4R operates exactly like that!

 

I am not in love with front end. I think with heritage grill my ORP looks way more aggressive.

 

This has been my problem with toyota. It seems they have a SUV for every single person out there, and want to flood the market with choices. Either that or some of these vehicles have gots to go eventually. GH and sequoia can't compete with each other, one has to go.
Maybe 4R still has space in the lineup, seeing how LC starts at 55K and 4R *should* below or at 40K. But they are just too close to one another.

 

I'm having a hard time understanding how Toyota is positioning the Land Cruiser, it slots above the 4Runner to be the premium BOF for Toyota yet there is no mention of X-REAS or any Adaptive Suspension, either basic or premium.

Did I miss it among the multitude of reviews?

 

The 4Runner is not a global brand. With toyota unifying into a single platform for its pickups and bof suvs, I too wonder if this new LC replaces the 4R, even for just a short number of years.

I’m glad I bought a 2023 4R ORP. I’ll be driving this new, high quality vehicle while I lust over new bofs from Toyota and hopefully be able to save up for a GX in the future.

 

There is the sway bar disconnect like announced for the Tacoma TRD Pro. Everything else just gets in the way for aftermarket upgrades anyway.

Toyota probably thinks the party trick is the hybrid system.
