The only difference is that the new 4Runner is made in Japan. Everything made here is not as reliable as made in Japan.

Tacos are not made here, they are made in Mexico in either Guanajuato or Tijuana plant.

This is actually true. Whoever says that reliability of the cars/trucks has not gone down, does not know much about engines and parts.

All you need to do is watch bunch of engine disassembly videos if you aren't mechanic yourself who works on engines. You will see how newer engines have cheaper, thinner parts while old engines had much beefier and long lasting parts inside, same goes with lots of Aluminium parts being replaced with plastics. You can even compare old Toyota 4 cyl to newer ones and see the gap in quality, 4cyl engines are not bad, its just now days all engines are like that, even the V6s.

Latest great V6 Toyota made was Tacoma 3.5 V6. Not counting 4runner one since that engine stayed over from old gen and obv is one of the best V6 ever made but yea even in 3.5 V6 you can see some cheapened out parts from original 2GR-FE, its just how world is with everything now and cars are no exception.

If you watch thecarcarenut on YouTube, he’s an ase Toyota/Lexus mechanic. He mentioned that there is a lot of plastic in new engines and he said surprisingly he never seen it failed. so it depends, I guess. I feel like there is more issues with gaskets and overheating.

Plastic in the engine bay and especially plastic cooling pipes are designed obsolescence.

I’d draw a distinction between longevity, reliability and execution since it seems like an engine can have an issue with any of the three.

From what I can tell, the current Ford 5.0 and 2.7’s are reliable, just designed with a capped service life with a wet oil pump belt to be changed somewhere 150-200k and that’s what, a transmission-out job?

I don’t think the Toyota 2.4T in transverse or longitudinal applications has had any highlights issue-wise.

I wouldn’t necessarily say thinner means worse especially with the advances in motor oil and material engineering in general.

And that while there may have been better engines since, there’s still a ways to go before we have to tinker with carbs and rebuild engines after 100k miles in the old days.

The video he did recently where he tears down a failed Tundra V6 isn’t too comforting. Lots of carbon buildup and scoring on the cylinder walls.

I thought he said he doesn’t know what happened to the engine because it was sent to them for “review”. He said that it looked like lack of Maintenance and oil changes.

Car and Driver put out their review of the Trailhunter (Hybrid).

This is tacked on at the end and caught my eye, seems hybrid specific and would be good for folks to keep an eye out:

Huh? He discussed the carbon buildup up a lot. Also showed which cylinder caused the failure?

I thought so, too. Boxier like an SUV, but I still think it looks like a wagon...sort of. Maybe a later purchase.

The collateral damage that Tundra created combined with just how good the Gen5 4Runner is understandably has many on edge where the Gen6 4Runner is concerned. The prices and de-contenting definitely do not lighten the mood.

Checking the comment sections on YouTube, it’s a sad to see many Toyota owners themselves making irrational comments about Toyota reliability. What exactly do they know about how reliable a 4Runner built in Tahara in 2025 will be in 2030? Or 2040? More importantly, if they can predict the future, then instead of crying like a baby, instead try passing the rest us some lottery numbers.

    Exactly
I'm actually very excited after seeing very little of the car. It knocks all the checkmarks for me

    Awd system
Nice interior .. hvac buttons.. displays don't look too overbearing
Turbo 2.4 plus u can tune it
    8 3/4" clearance/ 9,5" if u get wilderness- that's almost the same as 4runner
Biggest ugly factor for me is the fender flares
    Hopefully 40-45k range?

That green color is a home run!

Yeah, the fender flares are kinda funky. My daughter (a present Outback owner) said she isn't a fan of the Wilderness model and all the plastic cladding, but I think the other models should be pretty decent. (I'd be cool with the Wilderness for the ground clearance but could do with a less expensive version and be perfectly happy.)

If I paid mid trim GX460 prices for the privilege of beta testing a 4R with manual seats I would want some validations and upvotes too.

Doesn’t the front seem kinda trying too hard? The wagon look is gone, more upright behind now. maybe a positive for big dog owners. But the front seems too much to me. Will have to see how other trims look like.

That's like the go-to blame line now

    "it's the owner, definitely".

if Toyota is recommending a certain interval don't blame the customer if the results isn't as hoped.

You’re right the price & feature content do suck, but Broncos and Wranglers started the whole 60 grand-for-manual-seats thing, so it kind of sucks all over these days.

For the job of beta testing, I’m sorry but I gotta nominate you. You’re the only one here who I would completely trust to put Gen6 through its paces and report back w/o sugarcoating it. If you certified the new one as good, it could be a game changer.

We need to keep in perspective that yes, they are Fords and Jeeps, but Broncos and Wranglers both start in the 30s (low 30s for Wranglers, Bronco at 38k) with standard 4wd, both of them offer 2 door with manual transmission. What's the cheapest 4wd 6th gen 4runner? Or 2 door version? Or a manual option even though Taco has it? In case that's not enough, for well under 60k both Bronco and Wrangler also get you into factory 4.xx gears and 35 inch tires, what does the 6th gen 4R get you for 60k, highway all season tires and a rear locker?

If I wanted to spend 60k on a 4wd I would be in a Sasquatch package 2 door base Bronco with the manual, and I would still have 12k left over for mods. LOL. In fact that's on my "maybe" to do list this year if the annual bonus comes through.

What's the cheapest 4 door Jeep that doesn't suck to drive on the freeway? Oh, nevermind, it doesn't exist.

    Different markets.

Edit: I still agree that 4Runner prices and Tacoma prices are crazy right now.
