Hartman Rocks Trailhead, Gunnison, CO. My buddy was driving the Mothership. Saved me on some of the logistics. I departed from MD and he from SC and we met in Blacksburg, VA for a 20 day mountain bike centric trip to Grand Junction, CO & Moab, UT with a southerly drive out hitting trails along the way and a direct midwestern drive straight home. Great trip! I slept in the 4R for 17 of the 20 days and was very comfortable every night.

 

I only kept the bike inside the vehicle for the first night. It was on the rack for the remainder of the trip. I removed all of the rear seats. Home Sweet Home!

At trailhead to Doctor Park Trail outside Crested Butte, CO. We pedaled / climbed for over two hours to almost get to this spot / trailhead when a thunderstorm rolled in and we raced back down the mountain. So I had to drive it to see how close we were to the trailhead. We still had about a mile of a steep jeep trail to go to reach the trailhead via bike. The trail ended in our campsite. On of my few disappoints on this trip to not have completed this trail.

 

Shoes off to cross the creek to ride up the jeep trail portion to get to the Doctor Park Trailhead, Crested Butte, CO. I later drove across this creek to get to the trailhead shown above.

Yeah, it was a very rewarding trip! Something that I have thought about for a long time. Grateful that I was able to pull it off. I drove out with a buddy from SC (he has a Sprinter Van), another buddy drove in from CA and five others flew into Grand Junction, CO for a week. I turned 60 this year and really wanted to do this. I hope to do this again next Fall in the OR, ID, MT, WY region if possible. The drive out was great with no timeline and hitting trails and campsites along the way. The drive home was a drag - I drove straight home from Moab, UT to Frederick, MD in 1.5 days with 4.5 hours of sleep in between. I won't repeat that!

The 4Runner was great! 5,400 miles. $1,050 in gas. I slept in the 4R 17 of the 20 nights. We rented a house in Grand Junction for three nights. I would have preferred to have slept in the 4R those nights too!
