While you are not wrong @MeefZah about benefiting from trip plans I find it nice to not take up an entire thread that is not meant for trip plans. I would suggest maybe a different thread (if one doesn’t exist already).

Both the Napier and Luno are awesome!

 

We like them a lot! Took about 20 minutes to unpack, set up and connect the tent to the 4R, not knowing what we were doing. Should drop to about 10 min I would think?

 

Yeah, once you get the rhythm of it, it will take a lot less time (with assistance) lol.

Funny you bring that up, the whole sea-level thing gets lost on some people actually... eg. Denali vs. Mt Everest

I basically live at ~36 ft above sea level, our 'mountains' seem big to me. I actually had the same discussion with a friend of mine who lives in CO, he always tells me his house is at a higher elevation than most of our mountains. I asked him how many people have seen the weather on our 5-6k mountains compared to his 5-6k elevation. Kind of apples and oranges.

 

My house is at 6500 feet in NM

 

I live at about 1000'. The passes are about 5000' (and Mt Rainier is 14,417 feet. Mt St. Helens is 8,363' and Mt. Baker is 10, 781. Of course these elevations can change any minute because they are all active volcanoes. If Rainier blows like St Helens did, Seattle disappears in about 20 minutes! Mt Hood (Near Portland) is 11, 249 but that is only a potentially active volcano. The Sisters are all classified as volcanoes and are, respectively: South Sister (10,363 ft), Middle Sister (10,052 ft), and North Sister (10,090 ft).

I have experienced neither but did backpack and climb some 50+ years ago and would bet that the weather on Denali or Mt Fairweather would rival or exceed that on Mt Washington.

 

About 4 hours of 4Lo, a once in a lifetime trail. As in I doubt I'll ever drive it again. But the destination was worth it.

I wouldn't share the name if the trail wasn't so bad as to keep most people away. It really was that gnarly. I can't believe all I got was a few dings on my wheels, although I haven't looked underneath yet. Plus the Jeepers have already blown this spot up. Understood. Clearly Denali etc. rivals and or can beats the weather on MT Washington. I have researched Denali quite extensively actually...

That said, I was merely making a point that the weather on the top of Mt Washington (and the other northern presidentials in the whites) is far in excess to what the people see in the driveways at their houses that live at 6k+...

This is really all hypothetical as there are too many factors involved: Rain shadows, nearby heat sinks, cities raise ambient temperatures anyway.

 

Interesting points of view. That argument will never go away. In the early 60's I climbed and skied on Mt. Washington several times and hiked the Presidential Range during the summer season. That particular range of mountains can gather up some pretty nasty weather even in the summer. Any of the east coast mountains above tree line can and do attract snow in the winter.
I will say that after a couple of trips to Denali, I was finally able to score a clear day. I was going to attempt a summer climb but never made it. My common sense Physician wife thought maybe my 40's wasn't really the prime age group for that endeavor.
I suppose my point is that any time you are above tree line you should expect changeable weather.

 

Clearly you're a smarter guy than me and way more knowledge based on your past experience.

In my in my opinion I am convinced if you researched and dug up some data I am pretty confident the weather is and has been much worse at 6,288' on Mt Washington than in some guys driveway at 6,500'...

But again, I am no expert and not here to argue... Your mountains are bigger than mine. I will let this die.

 

This was the closest we got to seeing Denali. We were in one of the sight seeing planes and were supposed to go around the mountain, but, the weather on the mountain was too bad.

 

Our last trip to Denali (We're going next year for our second trip to Denali and 4th to Alaska), we REALLY lucked out. Heaven for a wildlife biologist! Saw the peak on the way in, along with caribou, ptarmigan, and raptors. On the way out, we saw ~24 grizzly-one a sow with cubs and one at ~6' (outside the tour bus), one wolf, a BIG bull moose. Saw a big bull a 1/2 mile from Ted Stevens Airport. That trip we also toured (by boat) Kenai Fjords National Park=saw sea otters, "humpies", orcas, harbor seals, calving glaciers and much more!! Last trip out of Homer (I caught a 35lb and a 55lb halibut), we saw a dozen orcas, a dozen "humpies", a dozen sea otters and a minke whale. My old boss is chief of Marine Mammal Regulatory Branch in Anchorage.

If you can't tell, we love it there. Second only to Yellowstone!! If you have never gone, you MUST go!

 

BearBio, we did a fly in fishing trip. About 500 miles from anything. Wild Man Lodge. It was awesome.

 

Salmon? Grayling?

We fish for halibut almost exclusively since I don't like salmon=I do smoke some local Chinook and Coho.
