The closest O.R. park is 2 hrs away in Kansas. There are some things to explore in the area it has just been a horrible year for the family and timing...

Yea.. being cold when trying to sleep...not good. I have a sleeping bag that is rated to 20 degrees that keeps me warm up in the Rockies during the cold nights... and my little "heater buddy" propane heater works pretty good too...but that's in my tent.

 

The use of a propane heater in a tent is a pretty hot subject (no pun intended) on a different forum. Here is a quote from a member responding to another member that thinks he is safe using his propane heater in his tent since he has a CO detector and it has never gone off. Pretty interesting and needless to say I will never use propane to heat my tent again.

"Bad news for you. There is a reason most of the time it reads 0. That’s a homeowner co detector. The lowest reading you’ll get is 30. I spent many years as a fire fighter. Those detectors are not sensitive enough to detect under 30ppm. 30ppm is considered the safe level of exposure for up to 8 hours, as in working on a car repair shop. Problem is co builds up in your blood over time. And when you move to fresh air your system will never give up all the co. This is why firefighters have so much trouble later in life with high co levels in the systems. I bought the buddy heater and tested with one of the 4 gas meters from our fire trucks in my 8X12 camper with window open 3 inches as directions state. The co level quickly rose to 10 and drifted from between 10 and 20 ppm while in operation. Well under the 8 hour limit. But well over what would be considered safe for long term exposure. So I returned the buddy heater and just use an electric heater that runs off my small generator outside. I’m not saying don’t use it. But be careful. It does make low level co that will be in your blood. Blood is 9 times more likely to absorb co over o2. So it will be in your system and will build up over time. All I have to rely on is 20 years in the fire service. I’m not a scientist or doctor. But I would never use one inside a camper."

 

Much thanks for the input... I don't typically run it all night...probably 3-4 hours. My tent does have some ventilation built in which helps but doesn't provide an actual flow thru the tent. I only use it when I need to come in out of the cold and warm up or right before bed. My tent is 10X12 with 7ish foot ceiling... pretty roomy.

checked out one of the closer shelf roads we have close by.

we were looking at 8200+ feet above sea level.





aired down to 18 psi on my falken wildpeaks (p-metric btw) and slogged up different kinds of terrain ranging from mud/sand, to rocks/boulders and scree and snow up top.



it was pretty rough, and got a shitload of pinstriping on the truck with bush overgrowth on the trail - not pictured.

no lockers, sr5 truck.

i will say that i am very very happy with the wildpeaks. only had traction problems on boulders/rocks with muck on them and had to just reverse a bit and use momentum to get up.

on the way down, had to use DAC as theres some really sketchy parts on the ridge with snow on it.

also, on the way down ive def used my sliders more than once on tight turns that have rocks and boulders on them.

all well worth it though!

haha sorry, just a canadian slang for scratches/bush damage.
is it permanent? depends how deep the scratches are and if they've cut through the clear all the way down to the metal. you'd be able to do paint correction/buff most of it like what i did but the deeper ones are still there.

haha yeah my bad...ahh and yes sadly, its a lot and am definitely not happy with it. been over a month now so it hurts less and i try to ignore it.

wish we had an ATV or a side-by-side to play with in the bush, would be so fun!

Well, it depends...

In my area, most roads that go deep into the woods have Forest Service gates with just enough room for a 50" wide ATV or UTV to get around. Most trails around here are designed for 50" or narrower ATVs, so I got the P500 out of necessity so I can get to where I need to go in the woods.

As a utility/hunting/slow-speed crawler it is great. As a fun machine blasting around trails it is not great. It has the least amount of suspension travel of any UTV, the least amount of power with a top speed of 40mph, and it is tippy. That is because of the narrow track and limited suspension travel. I have put it on it's side once and nearly so a few times.

You can increase stability greatly by installing a cheap set of 2-inch spacers and wider tires on all four corners. I did wider tires, but I need to get around the gates still, so no spacers. I also increased the articulation by removing the rear stabilizer bar, which actually made it less prone to tipping over.

I've had mine about a year and a half and have had zero issues. It starts and runs every time, is built like a tank, and it's configured for backwoods exploration.

I heavily considered the Polaris RZR 570, but it's like the Jeep of the UTV world; more capable off-road and sexier, but plagued with issues. It uses a belt-drive system that doesn't like to work when wet and needs replaced every 500 miles. Lots of electrical issues as well and poor support from Polaris.

I don't know how young your son is, but my sister and brother-in-law have 6, 10 and 12 year olds and they got them the Youth RZR 170 and have had good luck with them...



The P500 is a great little trail machine for slow crawling and tight trails, but not as stable as the RZR.

Once you start modding them, it becomes addictive. Mine is well-equipped now...
