4Runner vs GX460

    Now that you have the GX460, you've driven both the GX460 and the 4Runner Limited - correct? If so, what are you're impressions of the 4.6 V8 vs the 4.0 V6? I would think the V8 would be smoother/quieter. I was looking at a site the other day that was comparing 0-60 acceleration times. It showed a 2023 FT 4WD 4Runner Limited at 7.7sec 0-60mph and a 2023 GX460 at 7.8sec 0-60 mph. Does that seem correct to you? These 0-60 times could be bogus. I know the GX460 is just under 400lbs heavier than the 4R Limited - but at 301hp vs 270hp it would still have a little higher hp/weight ratio and I assumed it would be a little quicker than the 4R. It would certainly have higher torque and be better for towing. Does the GX460 feel like it has more power and acceleration than the 4R Limited?

    I test drove a used 2020 gx460. Nothing stood out to me, comparing to a kdss equipped 4R. The gx460’s driving position felt less truck-ish (taller and more sweep back windshield) which I didn’t care for.
    Granted test drive was on local roads at 5700ft. However I took my new 4R across the Rockies during the breakin period. It did great for my style of driving.

    RSG sliders, Yakima offgrid basket, Pro-Comp wheels, SOS Streamline bumper and skids, Warn VR EVO10S winch + Ultimate Sidewinder, Bilstein 6112 + 5100 + rear lift coils, Rigid Dually SS ditch lights w/Caliraised brackets and OEM style dash switch
    This sounds similar to my experience with my '03 V8 4Runner. I think the 5th Gen is actually quicker 0-60. But, the 4.7 had such great torque. It was so effortless getting up to speed. I think the lack of gear hunting/downshifting could be partly due to the extra low end torque.

    Just drove up to the mountains in our Subaru ascent with the turbo 4 cylinder. Man the turbo and cvt sure makes for quick and effortless driving at high elevation!
    Compared to the 4R and GX, it’s a night n day difference

    Sure its quick and effortless at high elevation but my wife hated driving the Ascent. She didn't like the turbo lag, transmission feeling and said it felt fragile (she drives pretty rough. don't see potholes, curbs, pavements, etc...)

    there are turbo lag to get used to, from a standstill.. but entirely manageable for me on our ‘23 model. Perhaps they have tweaked the powertrain over the years. Once you get up to speed, tap the accelerator and there is undetectable lag.

    car feels very solid over road imperfections so far. Very isolating, from engine and road noise. Doesn’t have the “Cushy” feeling like with my 4R, due to the 20” rim.

    I am still trying to attain acceptable refinement with my new 4R. Needle bearing rumble developed around 300mile mark.. I am extremely sensitive to noise + vibration

    I have a 22 4Runner Limited and a 23 GX460 and it seems like the 4Runner is more responsive and quicker off the start. The GX seems quicker at top end speed. My wife drives the 4Runner and I the GX460 using it as intended, i.e. hunting, fishing, camping and acting like I'm 16 again off road.

    My SO’s sister has an Ascent and it’s a decent crossover.

    Nimble, fits us all, same width as the 4Runner, the turbo pulls on the on-ramp and the CVT drives well enough. I’m not crazy about having a CVT long-term nor Subaru’s tendency to have “chins” necessitated by that layout they use.

    My only complaint was that in LA city and speedy highway driving, fuel economy probably isn’t too much better than a 4Runner and the gas tank feels small, but I imagine both will be much better in steady-state cruising.

    It’s ridiculously tiny and downright unsafe. The headrest is couple inches from the rear glass
