Yeah I’ve had several sets of the old version over the years. You’ll notice the center 2/3 of the new version looks almost identical to the old. The outter edges of the new version have a new tread block pattern. And it’s a really sticky rubber compound.

When I read about XL tires, it said cornering can feel a little more planted, which I’ve noticed. It’s subtle, but there. Same goes for that squirrel-y feeling in wind.

The new version shows a max PSI of 51 (I think). I ran the old version at 32-34 depending on season. These new tires feel better at 36. I do feel a slight difference in the gas pedal. But so far they’re a win for me due to feeling better on the highway.

Just like any other brick in the road... it's gonna suck. Mid size SUVs weren't designed with fuel economy in mind. They are people movers plan and simple.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going to keep the 4R through winter and stack cash. Once the road salt is gone I'll take a look around. I don't anticipate any highway trips between now and then.

Awesome to hear Car Care Nut picked 4Runner 1GR-FE in best engine list. GX460 engine also not bad, making to Honorable mention list.
No wonder 4Runner 1GR-FE is good to be used even in Land cruisers till date outside of USA.:101010:

To add to the original topic; I would choose the GX460 over a TRD Pro all day. The Pro is nice, but it's just an over-priced ORP... really has no mechanical or interior advantage.

However, I am drooling over the 2022 update of the GX, that interior is miles better. But that GX550 though oof that looks beautiful.

    Nice!

Do you plan to use it off-roading or just Costco?

It’s strange scenario to cross shop trd pro and the gx. They target very different use cases out of the box.

Pro is built for superior off road out of the box. GX has weaker off road capabilities out of the box - terrible angles( long overhang bumpers, less ground clearance, and the base model will not have the mts, crawl control, and MTM.

I debated the gx as well, but realized I much prefer stronger out of the box off road capabilities than luxury.

GX460 has some good deals. Crazy low APR. Definitely cheaper than buying a TRD Pro.

I've seen $7k off some GX460 lately. Looks like dealers are trying to unload them to make room for the GX550

For me personally, it's always coming down to the swing out rear hatch compared to the liftgate with the power window. Not a concern in the wide open. But in the confines of a garage, and the limited space is an issue.

I drove both the 4Runner TRD Pro and GX460 extensively and liked them both very much. As far as the GX was concerned, and maybe the dealer had things wrong, but in order to get the offroad options on the GX I had to upgrade to the Luxury model (+12K) and then add the offroad options package (+1.5k.) The GX was already 7K more expensive base price, and I would have had to do a lift job on it as well. So I realized there was as much as a $20K gap or more between the GX and TRD Pro and as such they were really not comparable.

The GX was great to drive but it felt like any other sports sedan, and at that price a BMW or Audi seemed a better choice. The GX V8 was nice but did not provide that much difference in power over the reliable 4R motor. Tripping over the omnipresent foot steps on the GX was something I could not accept and the running costs (gas, insurance, maintenance) for the Lexus would be much higher than the Toyota as well. To this day, I don’t see that these two trucks are comparable for the great delta in acquisition and running costs.

I think the GX460 (or 550), for its pricing level and utility, would be better compared to a fully equipped top level Audi A6 Allroad, and in that comparison, I would choose the Audi.

Yeah on the gx you must get the off road package to get Mts, crawl control, and camera package. Effectively increasing the cost of the gx significantly if you seek parity with the trd pro, in these areas

you can not get a rear locker on ANY GX. Only a center diff lock.

in fact I would equate the gx more to the 4Runner limited, given their similar full time 4wd systems.

powertrain in the gx460 is known for some costly issues around the 100k mile mark ( leaks, tranny issues) In fact, the older gen GX470 is known for having a more tested and more reliable powertrain

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
I wonder how many sales Lexus lost from the front end styling? At the risk of being considered shallow, we could have afforded a purchase a GX in 2022 but neither my wife nor I could get past that fugly grille. Too bad, that V8 would have been nice even though it wouldn’t have been used for towing. The 4R V6 is plenty adequate for us.

Also APR. Funny my Rav4 Prime friend pay closer to 8% vs GX460 friend pay 2% APR.
Maybe if I get a sunny day could do a comparison video or maybe just GX460 POV video. Would be even more fun if my 2019 TRD Pro friend buy the 2024 TRD Pro. (Atleast that's the plan as of now). Tried to convince him for a GX550 or 2024 LC(US model) but it's a no at this point.

(Forgot to add "Rav4 Prime friend". I don't own one):p

At least Toyota has been good about replacing the differentials. I wonder if they've helped anyone out with the GX transmissions.

I suspect the number of sales lost is a fluid concept as they seem to sell every vehicle they can make, in my area a lot of tech worker families roll in newer GX460s and they don't seem to mind the grill so clearly Lexus is not losing sleep over our opinion.

I chose to compare the 4Runner Trd Pro and the Luxury GX 460 for the simple reason that those were the two models that interested me. (I test drove the 4Runner Limited and did not care for it.) In my analysis the running costs of the Luxury GX 460 computed over a ten year period was not far from $20K present value more than the TRD Pro. Since the Luxury GX460’s initial MSRP (with the off-road package and cost of a lift) was nearly $20K more than the TRD Pro, its insurance costs were superior as well. Makes sense. The GX 460 also requires premium fuel and it drinks more of it than the 4Runner. And empirical data also suggests a higher level of maintenance costs associated with the GX. I really liked driving both cars but the Luxury GX460 would wind up costing me $20K more to acquire and $20K more present value over ten years. That $40K more was a non starter for me…..YMMV, to each his own, live and let live, all the usual disclaimers etc etc.

Increasingly a distinction without a difference these days as Stations Wagons evolve to possess the utility of “utility vehicles’ while SUVs devolve into glorified station wagons. In terms of utility, and that is what should be our focus above and beyond nomenclature, if you compare a Luxury GX460 to an A6 Allroad, the A6 has superior on road autobahn cruiser level pedigree, a superior air suspension and equal off road ability for simple duties. Neither of these automobiles are Paris Dakar competitors, rock crawlers, or Moab cruisers. In essence, they are both Station Wagons. As a prospective buyer of an on road vehicle with only simple off road tasks to accomplish, the A6 Allroad has a lot of arguments that are hard to ignore.

I wouldn't compare a Trd Pro the comparison to a GX460. May as well get the GX at that point because you won't find a Pro at msrp. I can tell you I would feel a lot worse scratching and chopping up a Lexus. You can also get a GX460 used for less than a 4runner. They depreciate faster

The majority of people who buy the GX460 cross shop with Audi as a Luxury SUV, very few people in the US buys it because it's a Land Cruiser Prado with a "bold" face.
