4Runner vs GX460

Gx is more comfortable and V8 is smooth. The 4runner trd pro looks amazing and comes with nice options. Either way you win.

 

If you opt for the 10-19 you can retrofit any of them with crawl control and Multi-Terrain Select like TRD Pro. No OEM rear locker option though as available in foreign market Prados. Heck... crawl can be less than $20 if you want to just manually wire and use simple switches.

I've got an '18 TRD Off-Road Pro, and a '06 GX 470. If I had to choose the T4R or a GX of the same year I'd be torn. The 14+ Front end looks fugly to me. I'd buy an 11-13 with service records out the ass if I did it all over again. I prefer how my GX rides compared to the T4R. The V8, the throttle response, the interior room (perceived) feels so much bigger than the T4R. Just my .02

 

Well it’s been a week since lifting the 4runner but I still find myself grabbing the Lexus key. It’s just way more comfortable. But damn the 4runner does look amazing lifted on 33s.

Who else picked up a GX? Im seeing more and more around me lifted and modified with roof racks, wheels/tires, bumpers, etc.

The factory electronic locking rear differential and HUGE aftermarket of the 4Runner trumps the Lexus.

 

Lockers can be added to the Lexus and aftermarket support is starting to explode for the GX platform. Anything out for the 4runner I can buy for the GX right now. Bumpers, lifts, rack, ladder, tire carrier, snorkel, storage, etc.

Plus the V8 and luxury of the GX puts it neck and neck for me. Like I said that’s why I have both haha.

 

Given that in foreign markets you already have a new generation of this vehicle which has substantial improvements, there’s really no reason to buy the 460.

I don’t understand why they still won’t update it.

On clublexus forum 22MY will receive big interior updates which delays 6th Gen and next Gen GX.

 

I agree about the front end. That’s why I’ll be replacing it with one of these. Also the new Prado is so damn sexy in Australia. Hope they’ll bring it here one day.

 

What new generation? It’s the same 150 it’s been, just the same thing they’ve done in North America with incremental exterior changes. I mean, you can say the same for the 4Runner, it hasn’t been updated in eons either, but that’s precisely why many people buy them.

There some things I prefer with the 4Runner, some things I prefer with the GX. I’d happily own either, and have.

I really like the gx and might seriously get it as my next rig. It all depends on what your needs are, if most of your driving is daily driving and you prefer luxury and can afford the fuel costs then definitely the gx, everything else the 4runner makes better sense. Yes the gx can be built into a capable off roader but the 4runner is superior when it comes to that

 

After amazingly owning a 21’ GX and sadly now two 2021 T4R’s, to be sure the Lexus is noticeably quieter on the interstate. No doubt the “acoustic” or I guessing double pane glass helps there as does more insulation. The GX does weigh a decent bit more.

The difference in cargo capacity is most noticeable. However, if needing a 3rd row, I would probably lean towards the GX as opposed to a Limited as both a similarly affected by the row. On the plus for the Limited, you have to step up to the GX Luxury to actually get leather as opposed to the “NuLuxe” which Lexus does a swell job of obfuscating it being vinyl.

The comparison is somewhat difficult in terms of how both models are equipped as in mechanically the closest crossover is between KDSS equipped ORP/Venture models whereas otherwise the Limited checks that box and of course both of those models share a Torsen AWD setup.
However, after driving scores of GX’s (both gens) and T4R’s (with and w/o KDSS), it really makes a difference.
Living right in the Redwood Curtain in extreme Northern California, just the roads to get to the interstate are pretty bendy. While, if living a relatively flat place, the difference between a KDSS and non KDSS model might seem slight, heading to them hills might change that.

While it might sound strange, I am not kidding that the primary thing I miss about the GX is the steering wheel (shared with the LX). Simply night and day in terms of feel.
The lack of CarPlay and having the same setup as my old LS460, was a strange one.

Obviously, you cannot really go wrong with with either. Buying a used GX makes way more sense than new to me.
When I ended up with the GX, I had actually driven to San Fran to pickup a 2013 GX from the Lexus dealer there. It was only after 3 days of waiting for it to pass smog to no avail and a sweetheart of a deal for a new GX that we went with it. While a fine vehicle, the trade offs were such that the juice was simply not worth the squeeze to keep. Especially with the used prices sure to drop, the same reasons many choose a used GX over a 4R very much work against you the other way.

Had Lexus announced that when my ORP got flipped before I got the Venture, I would have been torn. All the same, I really am digging the Venture and once I put in a legit sound system, I really will be pretty locked in.

 

Planning to trade in my 13' Taco for a 22' GX460 premium with premium plus package i can't wait! I want to get the last of the V8s Lexus still offers. Driving through the Rocky mountains with my 5th gen 4Runner made me realize the drive would've been better if I had a V8 in it. Last, I needed a new daily to replace the Taco

 

For sure the V8 is smoother and also an exceedingly reliable powerplant. That said, whilst not sounding like marbles in a blender like the T4R when higher in the rev range, it ain’t going to get you there much faster.

I am not sure why, but the Premium having vinyl bothers me. It might be because for many years of production, the GX was never offered in vinyl. I truly was not aware until driving home in the ‘21 as I never intended to get a new one and had driven down to San Fran to purchase a 2013 that seemingly could not pass smog.

Regardless, the new infotainment setup matters way more and these models will no doubt be highly sought after on the used market. While I am glad I got rid of my ‘21 while the market was batpoop, I really am not sure I would have felt the need to do so with a ‘22.

 

Both are great choices. I had a GX 470 before my 2019 4Runner. Lexus will have a few “bells and whistles” that won’t be available on the 4R. Cooling seats, auto wipers and headlights, etc. I think that for the most part, trips to the mechanic will generally cost more on the Lexus though. I’m not sure if the 460 has the same air suspension that my 470 did, but that alone was $3500 replacement. Also, my 470 had a timing belt, rather than a chain that needed replacement every 90k miles. ($1200). The 4R has a timing chain that will never have an issue. If it does, you may as well take it to the salvage yard.(from my understanding) The 4Runner will be a more simplistic system. But then, if you’re like the rest of us on this forum, you’ll probably spend a great deal of money on modifications to your 4R. As others here have recommended, go with the one you feel will make you most happy because both will last you a very very long time with minor maintenance.

 

I will have to say that the blacked out grill looks so much better than all chrome. Saw an LX like that too and it looked great.

 

I'm not worried about going any faster in a 5000+ lbs SUV. I just want the torque especially the lower end torque which this V8 has plenty of for me. Having that extra gear and torque helps a lot with less gear hunting. Drove my sister's GX several times in the mountains and hills proves to me the GX is better. For offroading I still plan to keep the 4runner since it has better approach and departure angles, factory rear diff locker, etc... commuting wise the GX is a better fit for my wants and needs.

 

The entry level GX is no match to the TRD Pro. The really capable GX with all the offroading goodies and the KDSS costs $70k+

 

I disagree the entry level GX is plenty capable just by switching tires alone and KDSS is standard on all the GXs. The off road package is basically a oil cooler and thin metal skids. I'd skip that and get aftermarket skids on the base GX. Also most Trd Pro 4Runner I've seen are closer to $60k now which isn't worth it for a Fox level kit and thin metal skid. If you plan to crawl the 4Runner would be the better choice. If you hit the fire roads and overland then both are the same.
Once again to each its own.

True that. Interesting thought to keep both given the similarities on the whole.

 

Yes but by adding air to lift the rear end you lose articulation and will ride like a sack of turds.
