Don't know if the OP is still watching this thread, definitely interest here in a tune kit for the 5th gen 4.0L 4runner!!
The transmission map is horrendous on these things!

I run Mat's (OVTune) 87 octane tune on my Tacoma. Better driveability and better gas mileage with the tune. If you want to go faster you need to step up to the higher octane tunes he provides - 91 and 93 octane.

OV Tune is working on it, I don't know when the release will happen but I can assure you there are a few beta tunes out in the real world as we speak.

I would love to see this happen. This as well as a twin turbo kit would be insanely awesome.

If I can get an extra 20hp at the rear wheels, I'm down for the $500 they're asking.
And if I can get another 10 with the Stage II by adding long-tube headers, I'm extremely tempted.

Call me skeptical. Tuning a naturally aspirated engine (ECU only) without altering other characteristics of the engine (cam, compression, injectors, additional (forced) air, ...) is not going to increase HP or TQ by a noticeable amount (I bet 99+% of us can't use our butt dynos to feel 5% gain). As you all know remapping the throttle response with Pedal Commander and the like is altering the throttle position response, not adding HP or TQ, but may realistically improve the driver's felt response.

ECU tunes for naturally aspirated engines exist in all makes and manufacturers and if the manufacturer's engineers couldn't/wouldn't meet the best fuel economy : performance numbers with all of the inside info for ECU maps, why would a 3rd party be able to achieve such? Call me skeptical...

...and show me I'm wrong please (but use science, not driver's perception).

I'd agree with you if it wasn't for the dyno test. Now if you call bullshit on the dyno test, that's something else.
But unless someone can prove it really is bull, and if their tune takes into account temp extremes (meaning the cold temps normally seen in the northern states and Canada which require richer mixtures), then I believe the hp gains & reliability. Less than 10% increase by going after every last bit of power isn't unrealistic. The fact that they require a higher octane is also an indication of increased power output.
I've run a Diablo on my 2006 Charger SRT and definitely noticed a difference.

And yes, you're right about the Pedal Commander. Great for reducing/eliminating the throttle lag, but adds 0 power.

I can't find a tune for a 4Runner on that site. They offer two brands of throttle control modules, but that's it.

I believe 20+ Toyota blocked ECU, no company able to get in and able to break for tuning at this point. I am waiting for them to break into ECU able to do supercharger.

Does anyone have the .cuw files to update 4runner ECU's to the most recent calibration file for individual years? I cannot seem to find that information anywhere.

It's not free. If you want update ECU according thru TSB you need techstream thru their server.
If you want Tune ECU, you still need to buy from serveral sites.

I understand that. I already have the Techstream, VF software, and any necessary tune packs. I am looking for the .cuw files used to update the factory software calibration on the 4runner ECU's.

Wow. Thanks for being so helpful man. Great to see you stepping up and being such a pillar of the community. The especially warm welcome to a new member is just a stellar representation for the site. Great job on that. I'm sure you are making other members proud, so kudos to you.

The .cuw files for many Toyota platforms are out there, in fact I have many of them for Tacomas and I regularly assist owners with upgrading when the dealerships will not. I would expect 4Runner owners would also want access to these files instead of having to fight the dealerships tooth and nail for an update. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe you don't represent all the 4Runner owners out there.

Anyhow, have a nice day and thank you for being sooo helpful.

NP. so you registered and come to this forum asking for Toyota database .cuw files for free. Expect someone to give you that database, your excuse is upgrading a new file to any 4runners. So you do this for a living or you have so many Toyota's you need to update ECU's?

I am not representing this forum, I come here to learn and to modify my vehicle , I am not expecting to make profit and be a vendor. If I do, I will tell forum owner I am selling and ads my business. I did answer your questions. the files are not free, you have so many files Tacomas where did you get them can you enlighten me?

For normal people like myself, you think I can just know how and upgrading new ECU calibration? Thre are no consequences?

I've been watching this thread for so long. Every time I see a new message posted I get excited hoping it's Mat... But alas, it's one of you fellas I'm very interested in the tune from OV as I trust it more that VR. I'd also be interested in purchasing each individual tune pack to tune for others around my location if possible.

I have VF Tuner and am running the 91 tune that came with it. There are no tune packs like the 3dr gen, just an 87 and 91 tune.
Once you have VF you can change what you want in the maps.

Tacoma .cuw files are easy to find.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/

Just coming over from the Taco side and am shocked how little tuning info there is. I am also a vF user and am looking forward to tweaking my 4Runner.

I loved the OVF tune on my '18 Tacoma OR. I would certainly be interested in a tune for the 4runner but I saw someone say that '20s and 21's are locked out. Is that accurate?

I’ve got tunes ready to roll for 2015-2018 4Runners. Working to get more added as support becomes available for more ECU ID’s. Any of the KDMax tuners can flash the same tunes depending on where you are located. I’m in Utah but we have tuners all over.
