I think if I were looking at 255/75 I'd just go 275/70...but I'd probably go 255/80 over 285/70. I should have one more winter before I need to make a decision though (and should be lifted before then).

Think fitting 255/80 is similar to 285/70? Only experience I have with 34s 285/75/17 is my buddies. Big jump from 285/70 to 285/75 suspension and cutting.

I don't think so @2021venture . The narrower 255 allows for more clearance as you turn full-lock.

It makes sense thinking about it. Toyotas have problems fitting wide tires not tall tires.

I just mounted some 255/80 AT4W’s. No rubbing and the ride great.

Thanx for the pic. I haven't seen many with 255's. I have the same rake and stance. When the 275's wear out, 255's are going on.

Do you have the same for a spare, just wondering if it fits underneath?

Tucks up a little more gaining some clearance also. This is from @Agent_Outside.

For reference, I’m on an Eibach stage 1 lift, Dobinsons, UCA’s, some Dr KDSS brackets/clamps,drop spacers, Perry bumps, and a BMC. Doesn’t rub anywhere and it’s articulated about as much as I’ll ever need it to. Tire photo is the back of the rear tire IMG_6426.jpg IMG_6425.jpg

Mine just fits, you can't slide your finger between the tire and KDSS arm, it's that tight of a fit. That's after airin down to 20psi.

I am going to pick our brain since I am debating this size. BMC(if not any rubbing)? How are you liking them.

I got a BMC a little over a year ago. I had bad rubbing with 285/70 and -25 RRW wheels. Yeah, it was because of the wheels I know.

I didn’t notice any issues, taking it in to Stellar Built to check it out though. Rather be safe than sorry.

Hey Todd I think you were referring to my build in your last few posts ;)
The jump from 285/70/17 to 285/75/17 really wasn't that much. What required a ton of cutting was adding wheel spacers behind -12 offset wheels.
1.25" spidertrax mounted behind 17x8.5 -12 equals a 17x8.5 -44 offset. The more common wheel size with the equivalent offset would be 17x9 -38.

Just pointing out not to overlook offset. 255/85/17 (skinny 34) may have been slightly easier to fit for me. But if I wanted to avoid trimming the bumper and fenders I'd just remove the spacers. But I like the wider track width, the poke, and having the bigger contact patch personally.

Another downside of the 285 width (other than weight and rolling resistance) is hydroplaning. Typically a skinny tire will be less susceptible to hydroplaning due to it's ability to "cut" through the water. The skinny tire simply has less water to evacuate.

Lots of pros and cons to consider. The 255/80/17 (33") or the 255/85/17 (34") are both great options though. Just be mindful that wheel width and offset have a big part to play when it comes to trimming.

Back from Stellar Built, had to do a little grinding for the pinch weld, just the lower point.

like stated above, the issue was my -25 offset.

255 85 17s. BMC and lots of fender cutting. I still have some slight rubbing driver side when making left turns over bumps/holes. Need to get the grinder out and take a little more off.

Thanks! Very happy so far with them. I did a ton of suspension work just before I installed the tires and went from 285 70 KO2s on stock rims to this setup.

Part number: MR70378560500, 8.5" wide and 0/4.8" offset. No wheel spacers.

Why would you go with 8.5" wide wheels? It seems a 6.5" - 7.5" wide wheel would work better for that tire, increase tire life, hold a bead better off road, and limit rubbing.

I wanted Method Beadgrip wheels and I think this was the skinniest wheel they make that fits 4Runners with Beadgrip...

Man I wish I could test fit these tires first. The 255/80's look small on my 4Runner, I am 95% it will be rubbing on my body mount. I think I would fine in the rear. I have a high clearance cut in the front, but want to see if there would be any fender issues.
