The "exclusive" PRO colors are carried over to other trims the following years, simply because of demand and $$$, of course. I'm sure there are more than several people on this forum and elsewhere who wanted a 21 PRO in Lunar Rock (myself included) but were unable to get one because of supply chain issues and/or Toyota ran out of production time. Thus, the 22 Lunar Rock came in the Trail and ORP. This way Toyota can create more car deals for those who had to have that color (but, were NOT able to get a PRO in21), but would be willing to take a different trim level as long as they got that color.
Same thing went for the 2020 Army Green PRO: in 2021 Army Green offered in Trail Ed.

I do not blame the PRO owners who got the "exclusive" color thinking or hoping it would be only for that year, it does not take away from that exclusivity, as that year was the only way to get a PRO in that color.

Exclusivity is relative. And there’s a price to be paid for it. My prior vehicle was a ‘97 Land Rover Defender. That was exclusive. Only around 7000 ever imported to the US. Compared to that there is nothing exclusive about the 4Runner. It was a superlative off road performer. But the price to be paid for an exclusive low-production vehicle is that the parts supply dries up.

This is not the reason the 6th gen has been delayed. It's been known for quite a while now that there would be no 6th gen in 2023 (despite what all the you tubers say). The 6th gen delay is because of a last minute decision to add an "EV mode" to the hybrid version.

Only ones that haven’t been recycled are the sandstorm and inferno red (best color).

Exactly my point. The decision wasnt "made", the decision was caused by supply chain non-availability to create most changes outside what the 5th Gen offered already. When you have the tooling, making another run is FAR easier than tooling for a new run. Motors , frames, bodywork, stickers, in-house or third party.

Trust me, I could careless about anyone on YT or IG talking about what they are making up. No one knows outside Toyota Japan and Toyota US. A company the size of Toyota doesn't make a last minute decision to change engine types/design. They've known what the NHTSA requirements are going to be moving forward for several years, without Covid being an issue. Lobbyists ensure that info so they aren't left behind while Nissan, Subaru and US brands do move on.

In addition, introducing the Sequoia this year was not difficult tooling wise. Sales figures show less than 500 total units sold in the US so far this year. 500! Tooling for less than probably 2,000 units of Sequoia worldwide was not a challenge and a good test bed to consumer acceptance.

4Runners on the other hand have sold more than 76,000 units in the US alone through July 31. Tooling for probably 150k+ would be about right for the US for 4Runners. They can't get the tooling, raws and parts for that many this year.

Yes, Toyota knows the NHTSA requirements well in advance of production. Most new generations take around 5-7 years of development before they are released. So why didn't we get a 6th gen around 2015-2017 you ask? Because Toyota was actually planning on axing the 4Runner after 2016 due to poor sales in the early 5th gen years. When sales dramatically picked up in 2014-2016, they had to scramble.........so they hastily released the 2017 4Runner and extended the 5th gen. It was after the 2017 release they decided to start 6th gen development. 7 years from 2017 puts us in 2024.

In 2017 when early 6th gen development began there were hardly any EV's on the road.......now look how the landscape has changed. Toyota has been paying attention and although they could have released a 2.4L turbo and a standard hybrid 6th gen by now, they decided to pivot and make the 6th gen a little more exciting, relevant, and something no one else really offers in the offroad SUV segment........a hybrid where the driver has full control to switch from ICE, hybrid, or full EV mode.

We will agree to disagree. Sales numbers don't pan out quite like that and all of these manufacturers have had the hybrid concept in prep for some time. They are far too smart to have to play catch up... like Ford did with their 100 mile range trailer puller.

The clear and obvious inferiority complex is odd in some people. Some needing to justify why the more expensive model (that they don't have based on finances) is somehow bad or a "bro" car is sad. We all drive the same car. Who cares if someone has one that costs more money than what someone else has. Try not being so hateful.

It's like in 2015 / 2016, tons of people said "I need a 4Runner" they are actually good quality vehicles and will go anywhere!

Each year, a special color is offered, exclusive to the TRD PRO model. For several years, those colors were not offered on any other trims in subsequent years. Just recently, toyota has started to offer ths
I think it's just all part of the changing world and the effect of social media. More and more expansion on YouTube and all the off roading and over-landing channels has gotten people into the game or, at least, interested in the game. Everybody want a trick or SUV these days. Good luck selling a sedan. Heck, Ford even stopped building sedans.

The 2014 Model Year is when the 5th gen got the new front end facelift.

I'd be willing to bet that had something to do with the increase in popularity, although not entirely the reason.

Gas prices also had a bit of a spike in 2011-2012. They started to fall a tiny bit in 2013-2014 so that could have played a role as well.

Something tells me based on the sales numbers you posted above that 4Runner sales are pretty independent of gas prices.

2014 was also the last year of the FJ Cruiser so those folks interested in that model probably would have naturally gravitated to the 4Runner once the FJ was no longer available

Are you comparing 2010-2014 consumer psychology to 2020-2022 consumer psychology?

If so, those are two very different times with much different circumstances.

Toyota just announced - similar to Army Green and Lunar Rock TRD Pro's, LIME RUSH will be offered on TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport for 2023.
Army Green no longer a color option for 2023. Trail Edition, discontinued.

That's exactly what I did. I wanted to make sure I could get the same drive train as my FJ. So the 4R was a no-brainier for me.

If Toyota really wanted to save some more pennies per model, they'd ditch those silver valances and just offer them in black. They look ok on two model colors - silver and MGM.

This is interesting, 040 is the color code for super white, I guess they changed the name? Also interesting as I'm almost positive my '22 SR5P is super white but 040 is the color code.

Agree!! I hated the silver valance on the front of mine - especially with the black. I spent a pretty penny to get mine painted to match the midnight color.
