Newer emissions regulations have ruined diesels.

I'll gladly take a non-stinky turbo gas engine that makes way better torque than the outgoing 4.0.

Interestingly the front coilover mounts are single-shear on the 4Runner:

    Vs. double-shear on the Tacoma:

That's pretty interesting, I'm surprised to see single-shear spring mounts at all.

I also don't like the gap where you can see the radiator (where the plastic piece goes on the 5th gen). Don't aftermarket skids usually address that gap?

Perhaps this is pre-production and they will change it? Because that's really weird

Actually that's a logo from Toyota which they use for their trucks.

The "T' design is also found in the shape of the taillights of the new Tundra, turned sideways of course. And more loosely, at the top of the tailgate with the indentations.

It looks like there are some mounting holes for a piece to cover that gap. I hope so otherwise all kinds of crap is going to get stuck in there.

No. Aftermarket skids typically end at the crossmember. Some aftermarket bumpers address that gap. May be better this way since you'll have to remove the skid at every oil change, thanks to the sideways canister filter. The GX550 design looks very time-consuming to service, with the overlapping tinfoil skids and plastic closeout panel.
Upon further review, the GX550 lower shock mount is also single-shear. The GX550 sway bar mounts in front of the LCA because of e-KDSS. This looks to be a case where frame and suspension parts are shared with the GX/LC, while the body parts are shared with the Tacoma.

Edit: dunno why mods are shadowbanning links but you can see the renderings on 4runner6g.com

I hope we get some more exciting color choices than the Tacoma, which has Solar Octane but I'm not a fan. Let's see a bright green or blue like Electric Lime or Voodoo Blue, which look great.

I’d imagine the single shear won’t be an actual problem though, right? The lower shock mounts on our current rear axles are also single shear and I’ve never heard of any issues…well, besides dragging them over rocks.

Well, now that I think about it, I suppose it isn’t the greatest to drag the front mounting bolt or shock, or slip off a rock and fall on it.

If I recall though, the rear might not be purely single sheer (at least the bolt itself isn’t)…due to the lower shock mount eye having to slip over a fairly thick threaded tube. The bolt itself goes into that tube.

If it doesn't show off that the Tacoma has a physical light control and the Colorado doesn't I will be very disappointed.

It's not a problem if it's designed properly.

Rear axle is a different situation: that bolt isn't carrying the weight of the car. (Separate springs and shocks)

Oooh, Good point! The rear shock mount hardly takes any force at all besides damping forces. Hmmm. Okay, yeah, I guess I’d wonder if a the single shear is up for the task.

    So this is amazing!

TheTopher has a video of the Taco TRD OR and he said he got 29 MPG during his drive. He says that for the most part these 2.4 i-Force and 8-speed can do mid to upper 20s MPGs. He talks about it at 13:40 mark.

I really hope this is what to be expected from the 6th gen 4R. I love my 5th gen and I already knew how bad the fuel efficiency was, but the 6th gen having the same Taco MPGs is a huge gamechanger. Yes it won't be as bulletproof as our 1GR-FEs, but should be pretty damn reliable before the rust eats the frame.

that will be an outlier. your average will be closer to window sticker or +/- 1-2 mpg once people start putting fuelly stats in.

for those that want to speculate, how much these specs will carry over to the 4R ?

how much the mpg will be like the 4R is what i am mostly wondering.

I’m assuming the 4Runner will also get that tiny fuel tank. That’s disappointing. I would like to know what the real world fuel economy will be driving 80 mph with a family of four and gear inside.

i would say add 5 mpg to what you get on average now to figure out what you will get in the new 4R. (5th gen is 17 city , 21 highway) / (6th gen is prob close to LC 22 city / 25 highway)

right now my lifetime avg is 16.67 over 363 fill ups.

but this is not always the case. our tundra is an odd case.

2018 tundra 4x4 plat life time avg was like 11.69 over 249 fill ups

2023 tundra 4x4 plat life time avg so far is 12.50 over 40 fill ups

I think the 4R will do better with MPGs because I assume it will be lighter than the LC and it's a little less boxy than the LC. The windshield is more sloped back than the current 5th gen.

My '23 average is probably in the mid 17s. I tend to get 16-18 commuting to work on backroads, and closer to 19 on highway road trips.

Assuming the new one averages more like 23-24.... I drive about 10k a year. So I would save maybe 150 gallons of gas a year. ~ $500/year savings. Good for the environment but probably a negative ROI financially if one where to trade up just for that.

but at highway its a taller brick than the 4R. 5in in height difference will really hurt mpg. and that front glass is pretty upright compared to the 4R

right now the only thing i see going for the LC is better luxury than the 4R considering all things equal if i compare the limited/platinum vs the LC250 LC version.

and right now i am looking at roughly 68k for a decent optioned LC250 LC version compared to maybe 58k for a limited and maybe 60k for a platinum for minor luxury improvements for my needs (ymmv)

I doubt it will be that much better. 4th gen Tacoma owners aren’t seeing that great of mpgs at highway speeds. Then if you add more aggressive tires, gear and people you won’t see much gain at all. My bet is only 1-2 better mpg than a similarly driven and fitted out 5th gen. That equals terrible range on a tank of fuel.

Yea the 4th gen Tacoma isn't really proving to be much better fuel economy wise. And the hybrids won't change that much either since they're tuned to be more about performance than efficiency.

On top of that the engineers managed to give the new Tacoma an even smaller fuel tank than the 3rd gen ‍:frustrated:

These small fuel tanks are idiotic. Especially since the vehicles are being marketed for adventure and overlanding.

Filled up last night at 5.60/gallon for the cheapest. Most expensive was 6.30.

    Not even summer yet.

Bingo. And doubly worse, coastal California. And triply worse, a bit more remote and less inhabited part of Coastal California. Lol

    Usually a bit cheaper inland.

Geesh. I was pissed when gas jumped up to $3.20 here in the last couple weeks. How can you guys pay almost double for the same product? It’s craziness.

cause everyone is leaving cali, the rest that are staying have to make up for the profits :)

kinda like the old Minot AFB unofficial motto, "only the best come north, only the stupid stay"

    and yes i stayed :)
