I’m amused by the fad colors thing but Toyota figured out it’s a gold mine. I’ve seen posts where people boasted about paying $10K over MSRP to get one of “the” colors. Just hope those hues age better than the teal metallic on my ‘93 Saturn did. In my defense, I only bought it b/c the wait was so long to get a Saturn at all. They were ridiculously popular at first. The thing when I bought my Xterra was yellow, everybody wanted the yellow. Nah…mine was white and I’m perfectly happy with my silver (sorry, Titanium Metallic) ‘07 4R.

 

Beats the hell out of new Bronco with catastrophic engine failure for some other absurd price.

 

The 5th gen was outdated when it launched in 09 and it's still outdated in 2024. Nothing has changed.

 

Car manufacturers are cramming way too much crap into cars nowadays. Makes them cumbersome to use and operate which is frustrating. And that’s coming from a guy who is 40 even though it sounds like I should be 70. Lol. I’m here for simplistic and leaving off the crap that is inevitably going to break down the road. In my past I usually didn’t care because I rarely kept a car more than 3 years. Trade in and move in. I’m ready for something I can hang on to for a while without fear of constantly having to fix random things.

 

Still wish these would come with some features to make the car feel more modern. Adding Apple Carplay and adaptive cruise control were a huge step up but there's a lot of features missing that we had in my wife's 2020 CRV before coming to our 2023 4Runner.

Example: memory seats, automatic headlights, power liftgate to name 3 big items we miss in our old Honda. Yes I know they're available in the Limited but why not make those features standard in the Off-Road too? We pay a lot for these trucks to not have features that seem standard in many cars nowadays.

Toyota Sense could also use some work. The CRV had lane keep assist which would help steer the car in between the lines similar to autopilot but nowhere near as advance, would be cool to see that kind of tech in a Toyota if it already doesn't exist in other models.

 

yes, already exists in other models. We had power liftgate and memory seats in our Venza, and our current Lexus NX. Automatic headlights are available in the limited and Pro model 4runners

 

heck no more crap for stuff to break. Look at 3rd gen 4Runners out there today, reliable af buuuut 90 percent of them their sunroof motors siezed and the clock doesn’t work, I’m glad it doesn’t have a power tail age. If it had too much features or tech I wouldn’t buy it. It’s a car not a home entertainment system you’re buying

 

My current 4Runner is 2008 Sport. Haven't shopped in a long time.

But last night I went to Toyota website and used the 'Build' feature.

I was shocked how many 'accessories' they had to choose from. I counted about 70.

If only they had a 'thicker and longer lasting paint job' as an option.

 

I’m old school I cannot believe what some people’s car payment are. And some are willing to jump into a new design not even worried about what the payments cost. I already mentioned on the forum where numerous dealers will not budge off the mark up on the Pro’s. There thing is they know someone will pay it. It’s gotta come to end eventually where the dealers have them sitting on the lots.

 

So if and when the 6th Generation is launched, and it comes with a sunroof and electronic lift gate on all models , you would opt for a different vehicle since it's going to be more of an home entertainment system and less of a truck?
Having a sun roof does not make a car hitech or unreliable.It's a basic feature that mostly fails due to owners ignorance. Clean the drains and lube the seals periodically and it will not fail. Just like it is good practice to switch of the AC a few miles before shutting off the fan to avoid mold build up and smell.

 

I'm also old school and constantly amazed what my friends are driving around. Always new vehicles, always big monthly payments. Living in debt so en vogue.

 

Hate to say it but there are people on Dave Ramsey financial advisor calling and trying to get out of those large car payments and feeling the pain. But they chose to do that.

 

No my point is the adage of add more crap to a car the more points of failure is proven. I won’t get the 6th gen because I firmly believe the new 4cylinder turbo is nowhere reliable as the 1gr. Not saying it will blow up right away (although there are a plethora of v6 tt tundras still gernading everyday, there’s a huge thread on the tundra forum where everyday people post how their bearings failed around 20k miles) and that engine is already 3 years old. I properly maintained 1gr will go 300 thousand plus miles I doubt the 4 cylinder will especially with the high numbers it’s supposed to put out

 

Lol, when choosing between used 2020 and 2021 4runners, I opted for 2020 ONLY because it had the mechanical key and not the push button/smart key.

I don't know if the concept will survive in the long run if it converges toward the main stream and away from a niche market, albeit still a very large one. It's really competitive if you're trying to get a broad appeal, in a market segment where Toyota alone already has six or seven SUVs. There are many vehicles out there that are far better as daily drivers than 4runners, even my wife's CR-V to some extent, which I will take to Home Depot if I have to haul something, because for some reason I can always fit more into it than into my 4runner. What I am saying is, I would hate to see the 4runner go the way of the FJ Cruiser.

 

I'd rather have a car payment and keep my money in the market where I see 15-30% returns consistently YoY as opposed to the measly 3% the bank wants for me to borrow their money.

 

None of us owning 4runners can be that caring about money, right? Old tech that is expensive to buy, expensive to run, and vast majority of us don't really use it for off roading in any meaningful amount. It's not really a rational choice to begin with.

 

The differences is a lot of those people driving around with large car payments are not investing money because they cannot afford too. I rather have no car payments and I’m able to still invest money. You can do both.

 

I agree with what you are saying - to some extent. I bought the Limited model and I do like a lot of the extra/convenience type things that are on it - moonroof, memory seat adjust, auto headlight, etc... But I really bought the Limited for two main reasons - real leather seats and the full time 4WD system - I would have gone without any of the things I mentioned to get those two things - especially if I could have gotten those two things on a less expensive trim package. With all that said - I bought my 2023 knowing I would have to pay MSRP for it because I thought there was a chance that the 2024 4Runner would be substantially different. Had I known for sure that 2024 would essentially be the same as 2023 - I may have opted to wait and buy a 2024. The 2010 Tacoma I was driving was in great shape and running like new with 145K miles on it when I got the 4Runner. I specifically wanted the engine, tranny, and 4WD system that is in this vehicle. Did not want, or need, a first year 325 hp twin turbo 4 cylinder with an 8-10 speed tranny - even if it gets 25+ mpg. It just will not have the reliability/longevity of the current 4L V6/5 speed tranny - at least not at first. Hey, it would be more fun to drive - especially in the mountains - but I'm not willing to give up what I think I would have to give up to have it. I certainly could be wrong. Maybe the engine/tranny in the 4Runner hasn't significantly changed in so long because Toyota has been perfecting a higher horsepower/more fuel efficient engine/tranny combo and it will be bulletproof right out of the gate. Possible, but not betting on it. This is why I bought a 2023 vehicle that nearly all the "auto experts" said was significantly outdated.

Unfortunately, what you're really going to get in the next gen ANYTHING is a vehicle with far more electronics - sensors, software etc - that may, or may not, be reliable in the long term. You'll also get even more built-in surveillance (ie: data collection) features that you may or may not be able to control or turn off. You'll also get a vehicle that is far easier to hack, with zero control over that too.

Now, I'm not blaming Toyota, but the industry as a whole is looking at the tech industry model for ways to increase margin and then doing a really poor job of implementing it. Just my .02.

Personally, if I could buy a 64-66 Mustang with a modern engine and brakes, I'd drive that thing every day. They've been my daily driver in the past, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. But that's just me.

 

Some people like to trade privacy for convenience. To each their own I suppose. I'm with you though.

 

If Toyota decides to update the 4Runner, it will get all intrusive electronic aids, entertainment features and data mining connectivity.
A manufacturer cannot ask 60K for a vehicle in 2025 and just give what Toyota is currently offering in the present 4R.
This is the last of the old school SUVs, where most things are analog and devoid of sensors and complicated electronics.
I would also love a perfect amalgamation of tried tested technology and only certain comfort features to strike that balance of ease of ownership and passenger usability features.
But it's wishful thinking.

It actually happened with my Gen 2 Hayabusa. Suzuki did not replace it for 13 years. All they did was add ABS in those 13 years and low level Brembo calipers and new paint, year after year.
But then in 2021, they came with a Gen 3. It made less power than before due to strict emission norms, used the same engine, but added a host of updated electronics package because in 2021 you cannot sell a bike with just rudimentary abs. It was definitely updated and made the bike modern but it was not a Gen 2. Every manufacturer will have to adapt to changing industry standards.

 

Agreed. All new vehicles are so connected now, it's crazy. Some you can't even disable or it messes with other things.

This 4Runner definitely the last of it's kind. Feels like changing of the guard especially if we get a hybrid version, and it's almost certain the 7th gen will be a non-ICE of some kind. That will be interesting to see with crawl control and those kinds of features.

 

There’s a white pro sitting at my local dealership at msrp rn. Was shocked to see it’s been there almost a week. Had a wait list for a while there and only knew that because I asked out of curiosity when purchasing my ORP. So yeah, maybe people are getting more turned off with the current state.

 

My local dealer has nine 4Runners right now. Including a Lunar Rock TRD Off-Road Premium for $53.4k.

A couple of them they've had for over a month. No buyers I guess.

 

A local Chrysler dealership has a 2023 Solar Octane Pro for sale. They started at 66,000 4 months or so ago and now they are at 59,500 for it.

 

May be surprised. Remember 2023 had “HEATED STEERING WHEEL” added and not really discovered for awhile. I had just taken delivery when story broke here. So…..
