I don't want any of those things. I want the lights on when I decide, and I've started every car I've had with a regular key. I'm good.

Interesting to see the differences in trim levels. When I started shopping for a 4Runner, I was looking for an ORP with moonroof and NO KDSS (I know, I'm in the minority with this desire, but I didn't want the future headache and upfront + added maintenance costs, and I don't do enough heavy-duty off-roading to make good use of it). It simply had the off-road features I wanted and the colors I wanted, it was the trim level that I searched for. Also, I could find more dealerships that were NOT marking up ORPs, but they WERE marking up Pros... so I was NOT looking for a Pro. After months and months of searching for the one with the right options for me, it just wasn't happening.

Then one of the dealers I was working with called and said they had a Pro that was just loaded on the ship, the original buyer who had put down a deposit had backed out, and if I wanted it at MSRP, I could put a deposit down. It was a Pro (about $4-5K more than what I planned to pay), it was not the color I was looking for (I wanted Nautical Blue or Lunar Rock - this one was Black), but I saw the writing on the wall. ORPs withOUT KDSS, in the two colors I preferred were very hard to find.. so I took it. The ONE option I wanted that didn't come standard with the Pro - the Dual fast-charge USB ports on the dash - was on this particular vehicle. Bonus!

Like many of you, I'm not fully enamored of much of the tech feature. I don't mind using a key to lock/unlock/start, I don't mind manually starting my lights, etc... HOWEVER - after having the Pro now for a few months, I am sooooooo glad I got this trim level and have those features. I can't tell how nice it is on a single digit morning to use my Remote-Start to warm it up, and have the seat heaters going for 10 minutes before I get in. My lady friend and I have VERY different ideas of comfortable temps, so the dual climate control is a God-Send!! Auto headlights etc... I wouldn't miss it, but it IS nice to just set the control to "Auto" and not have to worry about hitting that button when I get in. I also REALLY like the Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system. It's handy in a lot of ways, even when not off-roading. I know it can be had on any number of other trim models, but it came standard with the Pro, and I use it a good bit.

You guys are correct. it does NOT make a huge difference, but I think that the features that you DO get with a Pro or Limited are features that are useful to some of us. Would it make me like my 4Runner less? Not really. But in this case, I'm glad I stumbled into the Pro because I do use those features. I also have even gotten used to checking my car at night over my phone app to make sure it's all locked up, from the comfort of my bed! Something I never thought I would do after seeing my GF use it on her Lexus. Guess I'm getting sucked into the future. LoL

And I can tell you the Dual USB port option is well worth it. I have a wireless Car Play module that stays connected to the 'normal' USB port so my phone auto-connects when I start the car. I am forced by work to carry two phones, so the other two fast-charge ports are very handy. I have one feeding my magnetic charging phone holder and the other charging my work cell phone. Very Useful for my specific case.

I couldn't agree more. All of those little features were a big reason I was looking at the Pro.

With my last car, I had a nasty habit of leaving it unlocked outside of my house. This one sends me a notification if I forget to lock it! Genius, really. And I can get my kids out of the car and lock it without getting my keys out of my pocket, which also helps.

I tried it a few times, but didn't work for me unfortunately. I had read about this and got fired up, but, unfortunately, it seems to not work on my trim

In short, I want to drive my vehicle, not the computer in it. I get the creature comforts and I wish my ORP had some of them but lane avoidance, traction this, early braking warning, etc... if everyone paid attention and stopped with the distractions, the vast majority of these would not exist.

In the end, it isn't consumers wanting these features, its insurance lobbyists woring with manufacturers to make the vehicles "safer" in the name of less insurance payouts. Less crashes means more cash for the most corrupt industry in our country.

I can relate to this. My 2021 Tacoma has auto headlights, DRL, and auto start so we assumed my wife’s 2022 4Runner would also since it was newer and more expensive. So we were surprised when it came in to find it didn’t at least have remote start. I added it later myself.

Im not a fan of the TSS stuff, just annoying features to me. Hate the lane assistance and the radar on cruise control. Also just seems like it will be expensive to fix in the future when your out of warranty and it malfunctions. I admit I do like the option to select auto headlight on the stalk. My Tacoma gave me the option to run no headlights or I could have them on auto. Seem so basic and really shouldn’t be a reliability issue having that selection available. Oh well…still love this truck, just seems odd it has all this other “junk” and not auto headlights.

The DRLs turn off when you turn off the rig. Unlike the headlights.

Not quite. It turns off when you unlock the door. The doors are locked when you auto-start.

I have a setting on my ‘21 OR Premium that I can toggle to make the headlights turn off after a certain amount of time after I turn the engine off.

30 seconds after the vehicle is turned off, by default. I'm reading through my manuals right now.

I agree that the ORP should have the Auto-ON headlights. Ridiculous.

Also, I typically KEEP my lane departure assist off. Only turn it on if I'm driving late at night and tired.

However, are you aware that you can bypass the Radar Cruise control and have it work like a "normal" cruise (no auto braking/acce/decel etc? Just hold the "On-Button" instead of a momentary push. The green indicator on the dash changes (the car silhouette goes away), and viola! Standard, "old school" cruise control.

Yeah, and it wasn't like this was even new tech when the 5th gen came out in 2010. It was old even then, my 97 Grand Cherokee had auto headlights.

I look at Auto headlights as a safety feature. It seems like more and more people are forgetting to turn their lights on at night or an inclement weather. Last week one day on the way to work it wasn't full day late yet, and it was near whiteout snow conditions. I still saw a good number of vehicles on the road with no headlights. A lot of time they're actually Toyotas, I noticed, because apparently Toyota doesn't like Auto headlights or DRLs.

In my 2013 you can leave the headlights on, and then if you click the lock button on the key fob twice they will turn off. I used that feature this morning actually, I typically turn off my headlights but I forgot this morning, so when I realized they were on I just clicked the lock twice and they shut off.

A lot of times I click the button twice just in case.

So, with that feature, one could just leave their headlights on all the time and pretend that they have auto headlights and DRLs.

Guess I'm a simpleton. I want it to crank and run. Repeatedly for at least a couple of decades. Less shit it has to go wrong the better. Japanese built, Amish designed. See ya at 500K miles.

Another interesting thing is that the lane departure assist just makes noise at you, doesnt auto steer. Our suburban steers back into the center, but I actually dislike the feature because its somewhat aggressive. Maybe a lot of us that decided to buy the 4Runner still enjoy old school stuff you have to drive yourself. I do enjoy the radar cruise control a lot more than expected…. I commute an hour and on the two-lane highways its great! On the freeway, it can hinder a little actually. Headlights - yeah a bit goofy, but after a week I dont even notice anymore and keep the DRLs on anyways. My number one reason for getting the 4runner - its just the best looking SUV out there (IMO), and the roll down rear window! Also - my dad a lifelong chevy guy to the point of annoyance, drove my 4runner and commented “that thing looks sharp, and is kinda fun to drive around..it just feels solid” so theres always that!

Some Toyota models do steer back. Toyota decided to not go the extra bit to update the 4Runner steering rack to support this feature.

Not sure about the other years and trims but my 2021 ORP headlights turn off when l hit lock on the key fob twice. Nice feature but reality is....I'll get used to manually turning them on and off. Small price to pay for such a great ride.

Yeah, it's silly, and has very little benefit, but I love the push start.

If you double click the lock button it turns off your headlights. Also the range on my 21 tacoma remote start is horrible and the phone app tends to only work about 70% of the time so while it is annoying to have to add this feature to my wife's 4runner the aftermarket remote start will be a far better product.

When I was the kid in the mid '90s, I had a 73 K10 that had that feature as well. Personally, I think that's really handy, I have no idea why they went away from that.

And that's cool, I had the first year of the square body, you had the last.

My first car was a '74 Mercury Comet, the only car I've owned with the floor button. Great feature, really. They should put it on any new car that's going for a retro feel, like the Bronco

I like it too, when I drive modern cars. At first I thought it was silly in concept, but after the first couple times of driving my girlfriend's car with it, I really like it.

I especially see the value for a female, my girlfriend just keeps her fob in her purse, which she has with her at all times, so she just walks up to the car, which automatically unlocks as soon as she touches the door handle, gets into it, hits the button and goes. Super easy and convenient.

Along those lines, one of my favorite automotive features, which goes back probably 40 years, is the little keypad that Ford has for entry. I would love that, leave all my keys and stuff in the car and just hit the code when I go for a run, mountain bike, go into the gym, etc. Super convenient.
