Probably true. I just don't want to have to rev the shit out of an engine to get to the power. I would rather have a hybrid than the 3.5.

My plan: keep my 5th gen 4R in good shape and never need to worry about buying a new one. Unless of course the new ones kick ass, then I'll reconsider

I'd not make that statement unless you plan on living for a long time. These things will drive you into the ground before you drive it into the ground.

Only problem with that is why buy an LX when you could get a 4Runner for a lot less money?

They have to keep things different enough so they have a market for each, yet efficient enough to share parts across platforms.

True. But, they did put the 4.7 in the 4th gens. They probably discontinued it to boost GX sales.

I still think a lot of people would buy the GX for the nicer interior and fancy stuff. But, you're right.. Toyota probably doesn't want the 4runner competing with the GX.

maybe I'll do a swap in 10 years or so:D

It will be more powerful in the 4 than it is in the Tacoma just like the 4.0 we have is. The problem with the current 3.5 is where it makes the power which is in the upper rev range. Not a good combination for a truck type vehicle.

Correct. I prefer low RPM torque for towing and off-roading. The 3.5 isn't designed for towing and hauling. I'm not sure how they can fix that without changing the motor completely.

Maybe different cams and tuning could help. Boost or a Hybrid setup would help. I'm curious what they'll do.

Tacomas are selling like hotcakes in spite of the motor, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they put it in the next gen 4runner. If that's the case, I'll drive the '19 as long as I can, and then maybe get a GX or Tundra for towing/truck duties.

I hear ya, if I don't go to a one ton for a pop up camper I will most likely look for a GX460 to replace the 4. But this thing is gonna last a long time.

well it looks like the 2022 runner has a trolley pole on it .. back in 1900 , electric trolleys operated from new england to florida ...

If the Demorats win in 2020 then the vehicles will all be electric .. our gasoline vehicles will be charged a tax on the HP level of the engine. also the gasoline tax will rise to $10/gallon.

    vote for the burn !

That's not how things work in the real world.

The auto industry has about a 5 year lead time on developing new models. As a result, they make deals (as an entire industry) with the gov't regarding lead times for future safety requirements, fuel regulations, ect.... That's why you hear things like "in 2025 mpg's need to be 2% better on average than they are today." Car manufacturers are not sitting in a room waiting to see who is elected to dictate what they do a year or two in advance. It wouldn't be feasible for anyone in the industry.

do you know what the taxes are in the EU on vehicles ? also fuel costs ?
you have a 250HP engine the taxes each year are a thousand dollars.. many in EU use small motor bikes ...I lived in Spain LOL...
when the Demorats win , the federal government they will do this tax plan . also they will increase the taxes on your income. then I will burn up my runner because I will not be able to drive it.
the climate change is the most important issue these Demorats care about . not working people .

this is not what your talking about .. they will pass a tax on gasoline vehicles and gasoline , then the auto industry will fall.. then electric vehicles will be built..runners will be not sold because of the huge taxes ...unless your a multi millionaire you can afford a high HP sport car..
the current federal government deleted the MPG rates so that the auto industry is working much better .. lower gas/fuel costs because of the USA is a oil exporter not like years ago a importer.
Demorats are gonna shutdown the USA oil wells , another climate change creation..more workers on welfare.
    VOTE FOR THE BURN !

Whew. I thought he was crazy and then he turned it up a notch. Then 3 notches. All the notches are turned up.

As a person who has voted both sides I think you overestimate the ability for anyone to get anything done. That's Bond level super villain stuff there you are suggesting, that's gonna take more effort then a few people arguing on TV to accomplish.

I'll keep driving my dino 4runner around until the robot army of 2029 takes it from me I guess.

Wow! It got a little crazy in here!

    I could never vote for a socialist(communist).

Anyone who believes that the things the government provides are free is a fool.

    I'll leave it at that.

I talked to someone that had involvement in these Yeti style coolers that a lot of manufactures have started making, the rebirth of the cooler you could call it. One company that sells a cooler that outperformed the Yeti in the same tests that Yeti uses to advertise its cooler performance, only cost $98 MSRP, the actual cost of the cooler to make was $40, a decent margin.

So let's not kid ourselves, Toyota buys in bulk and the cooler is nothing is my point. Maybe I misunderstood your comment. No different than Toyota selling the TRD PRO with stock OEM shocks/springs in the rear, then add spacers in all 4 and throw in a fox front end and call it a lift, excuse me "Off road package" and up-charge another 5K +

I know it doesn't cost that much to make and that the mark up is crazy.

But I'll still take the Toyota Yeti in Cement anyday.

I cannot emphasize enough to regular, good people how much the people in DC and New York detest you. They hate you with every fiber of their being. The mask slips sometimes and you get to see just a bit of it. Do not trust these people with more power. You should be voting and working to reduce their power as much as possible.
